The SP4 wouldn't push too much pressure on the venturi? It's 1822gph, nearly double the SP2

IMO, I think that would be too much pump for that body. You could put a ball valve on the outlet of the pump and throttle it back some. This would leave you the option to add an extension on the skimmer in the future and open the ball valve up.

It's too bad they don't make an SP3, that would be the pump for the 24. I think SP2 isn't enough, and the SP4 is too much for the 24.

Would probably be a good pump for the 24. Now that you mention it, and iirc, I've seen a couple people on here use it for their 24.

I'm now considering a higher flow DC pump I can dial down. Jeff informed me that 2400gph is the max for that skimmer. That's a lot of flow and puts it in the M1 category. If I can dial it down to find that sweet spot I'll have the control I need.

Im planning on upgrading from my 90g to a 170g w/ 70g sump eventually. Would my 24" skimmer be able to keep up with that sized tank or should I sell it and get a 30"? Bioload will be heavy.

What do you guys think?

Are you thinking about the new EcoTech pump? Jeff can probably get you one when they are available.
I'm thinking about it now. I'll ask him.

You'll definitely be able to dial it down from the max 2,000gph to whatever you'd need. The fact that this pump has pressure ratings that are so high should make it an excellent pump for these venturi skimmers. If you end up shelling out the $$$ please keep us posted on performance, what settings you run it at, etc.

Yeah I'd go 30", and flirt with the idea of a 36" (especially if you're into sps) if you have the room.

how about the Sicce Syncra Silent 5.0 1321 gph, I have the 4.0 and it is very quiet

I have the 5.0 in the 24.

It's almost made for the 24. I had the mag9.5 that jeff recommended and it was inconsistent at best. Put in the 5.0 and day and night. Don't hesitate. And you can find a used one on the board for a hundred or so.

So lots of pump questions lately, I figured I'd pull some pumps off the top of my head for sizes 24-36 that I've seen people run. This is based on other people's results, as I've only tried 1 pump on my 30" body... Also, these are in sump pumps.

24 body:

Good: Flow around 900-1000 gph
Mag 9

Better: Flow around 1100-1600 gph
Mag 12
Laguna Max-Flo 1350
Jebao dc6000 (setting 5/6 or 6/6)
Sicce Syncra 5.0
Other DC pumps...

30 body:

Good: Flow 1200-1600
Mag 12
Laguna Max-Flo 1350
Jebao dc6000 (setting 5/6 or 6/6)
Sicce Syncra 5.0

Better: Flow 1700-2400 gph
Mag 18
Laguna Max-Flo 2000gph (7500lph)
Laguna Max-Flo 2400gph (9000 gph)
Jebao dc9000 (setting 5/6 or 6/6)
Fluval SP4
Other DC pumps...

36 body:

Not as much info here for me. This is where you see some people starting to run the external pumps

2400-3???gph

Mag 24
Laguna Max-Flo 2400gph (9000 lph)
Potentially Laguna Max-Flo 2900gph (11,000 lph) although haven't seen this run yet on a 36 body.
DC12000 pumps

Also, I want to say that the new ecotech pump with it's high head pressure ratings will probably be a great pump for 24's and 30's.

I'm running the 24 on a 190 gal with Jeff's sump/refugium as well, but nothing in the tank yet, only time will tell.

Just joined the madness.
Ordered the SVS3-30 for my 180. I am getting the Mag 18 pump. My only concern is the extra heat added from this pump. Jeff said he has had reports of a two degree jump. I live in Florida so high temps are a concern to me.
Replacing a CAD Lights skimmer. Very difficult to dial in but was within my budget at the time of my build.
Can't wait to get this...

I can confirm the two degree increase in tank temp. I just setup a SVS3-24 on my 75 gallon system. I am using the stock Mag 9.5. My tank was steady at 78 before the switch and now goes over 80. I have a cooling fan on it now to maintain 78, but I don't want that to be the permanent fix. Are there any other pumps that don't add this much heat? My old skimmer was a Reef Octopus Diablo XS160 that had a Sicce pump and I did not have this issue.
