The Life Reef Skimmer Club

I find Jeff to be very defensive and unwilling to take negative feedback into consideration. Also very resistant to change. Therefore no improvements in skimmer design. I may dump this skimmer too because it doesn't work as well as you would think based on all the claims.

Production is based on how many DOCs are in the tank and how wet it is set to skim. That looks wet. Your tanks are not the same as his.

Wow, thank you for that info........:rolleye1:

Yes it is wet, very wet...I don't want any in the tank. That is an OLD pic, and I will have to take a new one with the coffee (no creamer) colored skim in the container.

What I dont like is when I feed my tangs their nori the skimmer stops, when I feed brine shrimp or mysis the skimmer stops. None of this happens with the RLSS.

Are you saying that the foam level does not drop in the RLSS? Every skimmer I have had, the internal foam level will drop when feeding, and will return shortly, but not 4 hours later.

No it doesnt. Other skimmers that would keep skimming after feeding are reef octo, aquamaxx, and red sea. Skimmers that stop are Vertex and Lifereef once again in my personal experience.

Always depended on food type for me. My aquamaxx would stop when I fed mysis as does my lifereef. Both took about an hour to be back to full capacity.

I have not noticed either stopping as long when I feed LRS reef frenzy though the lifereef is probably down for about 20-30 minutes vs the aquamaxx which is up in about 15 when I feed lifereef.

Honestly I dont care as I normally shut off my skimmers for a while when feeding anyway to ensure it gets everywhere and I will power them down even longer when doing things like marinesnow and such. Once powered back up after an hour off or so I dont notice any real difference between my aquamaxx and the lifereef.

What size system is your skimmer on? Which skimmer has performed best for you?

I have owned these, and currently own the Aquamaxx, and the foam head does go down during feeding, regardless of what is fed, i.e. pellets, flake, or frozen home made cubes.

If need be, I can make you a video to see.

I had both running on a nano for a while and the lifereef is now on my 150. With that in mind it is not fair to compare the two in terms of which performed best with my feedings.

I will say I like the lifereef better as it is more set and forget then the aquamaxx in my experience. I dont have to worry about cleaning the bubble plate in the life reef which is really the largest plus for me.

I've never experienced this with any food I feed. I'm running the VS3-36 External with an Iwaki MD-40. I do see when my ozone kicks in the foaming lessens, but that's only the 4 different times during a 24 hour period. I also get thick foam that is BU-KU stinky. I actually clean mine weekly even though Jeff says you don't need to. I spray out a very thick layer of dark green mud out of the neck every week. I'm actually thinking about installing an automated neck cleaner. It does go into hyper drive whenever I dose certain aminos/vitamins and when I change my pre-filter pad.

OK so my mag is throwing current into my tank so it needs to be replaced. For the SVS24 on a 150 what pump would you guys recommend? I need it to stay quiet and be smaller in footprint like the Mag. I don't mind another mag if that is the consensus but want efficient and quiet (though I didn't have any noise complaints with the mag in the stand)

I've been running a mag 18 for around 5 years straight. I've pulled it out once to clean. Probably should do it more often. It's been very dependable and hasn't reduced performance at all. Only way I can say that is that I run a bean animal overflow and if performance changed at all I would have had to retune the siphon.

YMMV. Basically that can be said with anything that is electronic or mechanical.

But Ehiem pumps are good dependable pumps as well.

you have the mag18 on the svs24? I don't mind another mag if that is the consensus. It is louder then my fluval return pump but not too bad. Honestly the only thing I hear from my tank is the fans on the ATI fixture.

Ehiem pumps are great as I have used them for FW before. Which one do you recommend?

Sorry, no the mag 18 is my return pump. Runs 24/7 since 2011. I have 2 spares collecting major dust. I just placed an order though for an MTC MVX 36" w/ quick change head that I will put one of the spares on.

Personally, if my mag died today I would look at the fluval sp6 but for the 24" the sp4 might do. Just another option out there.

But I assume you were running a mag 9.5 or 12? The ehiem 1262 is an awesome reliable pump that could probably out perform the mag 12.

Fwiw, Jeff uses a mag18 on an svs24.

I think we had a similar discussion 3-4 pages back.

I have no first hand experience with both pumps on a svs24, but how do you figure an eheim 1292 is going to be a nice upgrade over a mag 9.5? They're virtually the same pump on paper, BUT the mag 9.5 has a higher max head pressure rating. 12.85' vs. 11.5'.

From what I've seen on this thread, if you want an substantial upgrade for an svs24 get a mag 12, better yet dc pump rated for around 6.5-8k, or a mag 18.
