The Life Reef Skimmer Club

wondering on 2 pumps -- vectra m1 or mag9? or....???

You might take a look at the Reef Octopus Varios line....I have two - used as return pumps and I can't even hear them. Very nice pumps and I will use one when I get my LR skimmer installed.

Are these Lifereef skimmers generally louder than some of the newer needle wheel skimmers, Icecap K2, New Eshopps, Deltec, RO, etc, outside of pump noise?

Mine is not loud with the right pump on it. With a Mag18 yes, mine is louder than I want it to be. I am looking to replace the pump. Once done , I'll report back.

Yes they are, the Venturi creates an audible slurping sound. Is it terribly loud no, is it louder then modern needle wheels yes.

I'm in. First CLF-1 he has done with blue. Selected the flanged 24" skimmer to get the blue flange. I have a black light and regular LED in the cabinet to get the POP!

Thanks Fragaddiction! Arrived today. I'm now part of the club. It's an older model. VS3-24" it appears. Was thinking of the jebao dcp10000 to run it

Thanks guys. Upon closer look it's an SVS2-24". This is a massive thread and I don't know that I can make it through the entire thing for questions. What was the consensus on clipping the 1/4" barb off on the Venturi? Does it really make that much difference. I didn't figure we were moving quite enough air pressure for that to noticeably restrict flow.

Is there really any major performance difference between the stock and a mazzei venturi?

What are people's thoughts on the jebao dcp 10000 pump to run it? I know a high pressure rated external pump is ideal but I don't have the space and modifying my sump with a bulkhead isn't much of an option. I was going to run a T off of the pump output and power a gfo reactor with it as well. I figured getting such an oversized pump would make up for its weaker pressure rating. I don't know that I could tolerate the loud hum of a mag drive in the living room of the house

If by clipping the barb off, you mean removing the air hose attachment altogether... I don't think people have noticed enough performance improvement to warrant the extra noise and maintenance. (The moist air coming from the collection cup apparently helps protect the venturi from clogging due to salt. Without that moist air, you should be cleaning the venturi occasionally.)

Jeff at Lifereef says the Mazzei only a slight improvement on the size of skimmer that you have. Check out the images on the skimmer page on his website - you can see he mostly uses that venture on the taller (high performance) skimmers.

No I mean how it has a stepped barb on the Venturi. A 1/4" which widens to 3-8". I hear some people just sawing off the 1/4" portion and attaching the hose to the 3/8" piece

I run a DCT-4000 on my 24" LifeReef with excellent results on my 80gal system. I tried a DCT-8000, but it was much louder for not much of a performance gain, in my opinion. I don't get the dark tea-colored liquid, but do get a good amount of sludge collection in the neck. I figure it's doing its job well enough!

I started with a dct8000, but moved to the dct12000 for my 30".

Venturi skimmers... More water = More air

I definitely had to adjust my valve.

The newer dcp pumps are virtually silent @Bpb , I have a dcp8000 as a return and can't hear it over my surface agitation. For the extra 5-10$ it runs I would definitely get the 10000 and call it a day. I know Jeff runs a mag 18 on his personal 24"
