The Moorish Idol Thread

hummmm, QT tank, yeah!
I really hope it works out, I remember last time all my fish got ich. Many did not make it out of the QT tank wet.

fppt, I caught him in a large net and just hold him in the net. I use surgical gloves to protect the slime on the fish. Also it is a large fish so it is very easy. I don't shove a needle in his eye, that would blind him, I put the needle in the thin skin just above the eye. If you ever seen a fish with pop eye, as the eye pushes out there is a very thin white membrane above the eye that gets stretched. There is a piece of skull bone between the eye and the brain but it does not cover the entire area so you don't stick the needle all the way in. The fluid or gas gomes right out and the eye goes right back to where it is supposed to be. I have done this numerous times and never lost a fish. It is much harder on a small damsel.
I have also removed tumors on many fish including a large tumor in the belly of a puffer which lived about twelve years after the surgery. Healthy fish have a very good recovery rate.
You can cure ich in a little over a day by mixing copper and quinicrine hydrocloride 10 mg/gallon. This is malaria medication and may be difficult to get in the US now. You may be able to get it from a Vet.
Have a great weekend Paul

Shawn, my suggestion to you and this is just my opinion but take the advice for whatever its worth. Use Hyposalinity to cure your ich. It is the safest and least stressful way to cure fish that have ich. I have been using it for a long time and the fish always lose the ich within the first week or so. You would have to do it for about a month though just to make sure. But it does work. There is alot of nice info about it here on reef central. I may end up doing it for my Idol if his ich gets any worse. But for right now its bearable.

You know I am actually glad I had to rip my entire tank apart to get my Idol and Regal out. Cause now I have re-done the entire rock work structure in my tank and it looks better than ever. My tank has also become a zoanthid garden because I was able to put all the frags back into my tank once they were out. I didn't realize I had so many.

Anyway, all is still well with my Idol, still looking pretty good and eating like a pig. He is the king of the 110. He bullies my Regal Angel a bit, but nothing serious. We'll have to see how he reacts when I start adding new fish eventually. It will be interesting.

Oh yeah, on a side note. I don't know if any of you have heard of www.myspace.com. But it is a great networking tool. And if any of you have an account there we should add each other to our friends lists. I am thinking about starting a group on there devoted to this hobby. If anyone is interested let me know!

Heres the link to my profile (lots of pictures of my tank and Florida):

Thanks for the advise guys... however a month is too much... I do not have any ROOM or time to be able to properly do a hyposalinity treatment.... I have In my experience learned that the QUICK CURE treatment tends to give good results....

I would like to try the Cu and Hydro solution, however I do not know where or how to get my hands on THOSE chemicals, nor do I trust my Limited Chemitry Knowledge either, lol, although mixing 2 elements is fairly easy.... so I suppose it wouldnt be hard!

haha..

Well.. I HAVE indeed found a solution to this little problem.... I have got a 20 gallon rubbermade tub... so I plan on using it and a powerhead and an ammonia kit and extra makeupsaltwater haha, one word anyway!.... and a bottle of quick cure and a heater to solve this problem....

This way I dont have to HAUL the fish down the the LFS.. plus we DO NOT have the room to do this !

well.. I will tell you guys how it goes... I am moving the tank this next sunday! one week countdown!

lets start!

7 days untill... ... TM day... :)

Actually Shawn now that you mention Quickcure. I have used that before where I used to work. Some fish it worked for great, and others it didn't. But I did have some success with it.

Thanks Zfunk!

Today it looks better, which is bad.... as we know about the ICH cycle!.... so I am in need to make a QUICK action!...

The EARLIEST date I can get the tank redone is this saturday! :(

I dont know IF I WANT to move it or not... Im thinking about NOT moving it.... but INDEED redoing the intire tank!

Today I have sliced my finger open quite well!.... I REALLY DONT LIKE FOIL ANYMORE! Its a fairly bad cut.... needs to heal before I go and start chunking rock around!

hey paulB, try diving in the philippines, im from cebu city and we have alot of them here specially in the pristine reef areas.

maybe ill try a MI soon

Junix, maybe I will try diving in the Philippines. I dove most of the Caribbean and Bahamas, most of the Hawaiian Islands, A little in Australia and three of the Tahitian Islands. I still want to dive Pago Pago, Galapagos and the outer Islands of Japan. I never thought of the Philippines though.
This year we are supposed to dive around Sicily but I haven't had time to book it yet. I will dive anywhere, I should have been a fish. For most of the year I am confined to New York diving which is a totally different experience. Most divers would not like it at all. Visability is measured in inches and not too many inches either.
Have a great day and thanks for the Philippines Idea.
Paul

LOL @ CRAZY BLACK IGUANAS!!!!

haha,

Well, Ive not given an update on my IDOL so I think I will

He is still doing well, eatting like a pig still, with nitrates being fairly stable at 40ppm....

his streamer is growing again, its about 4inches now... thats to say as long as the Coral Beauty doesnt make a meal out of it again!

The ICH doesnt seem as bad now, which is BAD, knowing the cycle process...
I have recently gotten sick, with some type of Virus or Bacterial Infection... basically the doctors dont know, so they are treating me for both, I am exhibiting strep/flu symptoms, however the Bloodwork and Strep Test both came back negitive, as well as MONO comming back negitive.... they said my WBC count was 7... where 3 indicates viral and more around 10 or so indicating bacteria... so they are treating me for both...
Im HOPEING that I will be well by this saturday that way I can get the tank moved... we have decided to move it in front of the two large dinning room windows, which I plan on putting Light Filtering curtins as well as some light BLOCKING screens to block out the light.... hopefully this wont make algae a problem, as Im seeing that it is becomming, mainly just Diatoms, NOT SURE if they are caused by Indirect sunlight or not, but if so.... maybe this will help.... also, as far as the fish getting ich, I am going to QT them in a 20 gallon Rubbermade Tub..... using a heater and a Powerhead, instead of a filter, mainly because you have to remove all carbon when using the Quick Cure... sooooo... yeah, whats the purpose of a filter...
Ill keep a check on Ammonia and such while medicating the fish too of course!!!

So far Ive gotten a 20LB bag of Bahama Oolite and 2 25LB bags of ESTES MARINE SAND... I really like this sand, looks EXTREMLY natural and is very small so you get MAX filtration plus it has buffering abilitys... so that makes it just that much better, its good stuff... and is HARD TO FIND because of ESTES ....

QUESTION: Ich cannont develop in Live Rock can it?.... I meen, can not go through its cycle in LIVE ROCK?... I know it can in sand just I didnt know about LIVE ROCK?... I suppose maybe?

anyway, Ill keep you guys up on the fish and such!

HEY EVERYONE!!!... so TMDAY is offically in spin!!
Today is the start... its about 10:20 and Im just now getting time to take a few pictures after the initial prep day!..today! :)

I will post them last!

Well... Everything has gone MAVVVVV-A-LOUSSSS so far!... and preping is going well!

tomorow will be the BIG DAY!

Only one thing... we have had to change the spot on where to put the tank... it was originally supposed to go in a little "cubby" spot that would be very nice and make for good centering in the room, then it was changed to be moved to the dinning room in FRONT of the two large windows overlooking the woods and Driveway... but after going up under the house and reassessing the floor support ... yeah, thats a NOOOOO!!!... there was just a SINGLE support,SOOOO, we are going to move it to the ORIGINAL area.. where there are 4 supports!

I am going to medicate the fish tomorow after the move, they have their own 20 round rubbermade tub... best I could do on such short notice... so they should be fine... considering they are only going to have to be in there for a few days...

the ONLY living things I have put in their own "BIN" so far are some Inverts, like a Conch, Astrea Snail, YB sponge, Pink Cucumber, Derasa Clam, and an anemone.... they will be in a small 4 gallon BLACK bucket with aireation(?) for about 2 days or so... keeping watch on the perimeters.... of course....

and I did FINNALLY get that sand... Marine Sand from Estes... I LOVE THE STUFF... its great, nice size, and very very OCEAN looking! .. its kinda yellowy dry and outside a tank, but after putting it in a tank with appropreate lighting then it is very bright white/cream... very nice looking... I will be mixing 50LBs of that with 20Lbs of Bahama Oolite LIVE SAND from CaribSea... I think!

The Moorish Idol is still going to my friend, although NOWWWW Im having second thoughts! :(... :), ??? haha
I just LOVE the thing, but knowing that he will have a HUGE tank, lots of swimming room and natural sponges and such for him to eat is really better!!.... soooooooo........... I duno, Yeah, I suppose he DESERVES to go to the tank!

after those really " EVIL-A-FIED" YT damsels come out, my new small fishes that I will put in are going to be a Red Cap Gobie, I LOVE HIM !!!, and 2 GoldStripe Neons, that are INDEED eatting well!, and 2 Regular Neons that are eatting as well... also, possibly .. ok yeah, and a Catalina Gobie... My tank stays cool, about 74*F, and they are a cool water gobie... so he should be just fine... although that is a bit warm for him still!..... Another friend has one in her tank and her tank stays around 78*F to 80*F... so I think he will be fine!... and possibly some more SMALL gobies... or possibly that will be all!...

OH YEAH, and a Red Sea Mimic Blenny!... I LOVE THOSE!!

OK ENOUGH CHIT CHAT!!!.. lets get to the pics EH?
alrighty!

This is the Rock Bucket, just got some rock from the LFS, large peices, that I needed, and just to get some out stuck a few of my smaller ones in their with a PH

465546090MbTXui_ph.jpg

This is where the fish will be medicated at, has a PH, Airstone and some rock for fish confort...

465546636QmsAPF_ph.jpg

This is a Junk Bucket, just couldnt deside on where to put some stuff... so just chunked it in the center, tomorow this bucket will become the corals bucket... and possibly another will too!

465546829VpxMJT_ph.jpg

This is the Inverts 4 gallon BLK bucket for now... Now its got, a pink Cucumber, derasa Clam, Anemone, Conch, Astrea Snail, and a YB sponge....

465546444fPgqZa_ph.jpg

This is the JUNK Box for junk that was under the stand, just takeing up space.... when I move the tank, I will redo how I had it in there!!!

465546647bvCqiR_ph.jpg

My salt.. well.. ONE of the bags!.. I would prefer to use TROPIC MARIN, however, it is quite expensive and I basically just need a basic salt to just House everything, like rock Makeup water etc.... and Ive used IO for YEARS!

465547105ZBAWTm_ph.jpg

Some Live Sand I will be useing, this is the famous Bahama Oolite Ive been talking about!

I just got done with all those pictures and comments and I screwed up and clicked the back button, it deleted all the info, im tired, good night, Ill post again tomorow, please delete the double post someone... thx, bye!

Well... Got the tank moved... Im not even going to bother putting the other pictures on the thread....

Kinda upset.... I got it moved, everything is ok, got the rocks looking nice, and replaced my substrate, and the corals are fine...

As you know, I was going to QT the the fish, in a 20 gallon rubbermade tub with a filter running and etc...

Well... I did just that... took the TANK water, filled the tub half way up, put a small microjet powerhead in it, and 2 airstones, for extra O2... they were fine for the first 24 hours.... I went to bed after checking on them and they were fine, woke up the next morning and they were fine, at lunched I called the house, and made sure someone fed them a little, they were fine, came home and the water had turned white and they were dead...

I LOST ALL MY FISH EXCEPT MY CLOWNFISH AND 2 YT DAMSELS!

I lost, my Moorish Idol :( :(
I lost, my Flame Angel :( :(
I lost, my Coral Beauty:( :(
I lost, my Yellow Tang :( :(

the ONLY fish that survived where the clownfish, who seemed UNHARMED, and the YELLOW TAIL damsels...

After being VERY upset I started to do some looking into why this was.... checked the buckets Water Quality and everything showed up perfect... no ammonia, no nitrites, and just 20 Nitrates, same as the tank was....

I do NOT think they were overfed, because I saw NO food laying on the bottom...

The fish looked as if they had been poisoned.... Then IT HIT ME!
I was using Quick Cure to dose, and what I did was use the whole 20Gallons worth when it was not even filled half way... also, I think by accident I doubled dosed 1 day ..... I do NOT KNOW WHAT had REALLY for 100% sure why they died, and WHY the damsels and Clownfish where perfectly unharmed!...

needless to say Ive been really upset... but now I have moved on and accepted this small misfortune...

moving on with other news, the Inverts, clam, cleaner shrimp, fromia star, cucumber, and conch did fine in the move and are now doing well.... the cleaner shrimp has even molted!

I do not have ANY fish in the tank... but will have 2 in their by saturday night... the FIRST 2 new fish are my clownfish and a small 2 inch "Dorry"... ( regal tang ) ...
I plan on putting another flame and Coral Beauty in their.... and also, 2 goldline neon gobies for my small fish , as well as a catalina gobie...

now as for 1 or 2 more med fish I want to put in a yellow tang, and now, my next new fish, an achillies tang, the ONE tang Ive always wanted... I plan on having it ordered and keeping it at the store and medicating it untill Im sure its ready to come home... I am only getting a SMALL!... about 2 to 3 inches...

I plan on putting small fish in the tank and allow them to grow... so this way the tank adjusts and I get to see them grow up!

so my NEW fish stock for my 75 gallon will be, when finished

1 Percula Clown (male)
1 Regal Tang (sm)
2 Goldline Neon Gobies (eatting and well at the store)
1 Catalina Gobie ( eatting well as well )
1 Yellow tang ( SMALL )
1 Achillies Tang ( small )

so 7 fish in the 75 gallon, 4 smalls, 3 large...
the Yellow tank I will put in LAST!

I really am seriously upset about the moorish idol, as anyone would be!... he was really starting to do well!...

so upsetting, I was asked today at work if I would be getting another, and after a quick minute of thought said No, I dont think I will be, at least, not untill I get a very large 300gallon to 400 gallon tank for it... and Even then... still, MAYBE, not for sure...
the friend that asked said that she was thinking about trying another, which Of COURSE, I told her what they require, and what one is the best candidate and etc... but lol, after telling her mine loved to eat brain corals, she said, oh, nevermind!...

lol!... so, I dont think she will be getting one... well, not for now anyway!

I do have a question... I plan on starting to restock the tank on saturday.... only having 2 small fish in it... that means the tank will be without any fish for 3 full days... 4 actually...
I am kinda worried about ICH reemerging, but I did replace the substrate, and I did WASH the inside of the tank down with freshwater and cleaning it with water and then adding new substrate... so, I believe that that should have taken care of any ICH that was in the substrate....

Do you think that someone ( ich parasite ) may have survived?...
I know the period of " incubation " is 7 to 12 days, but I DID replace the substrate, and as far as I know, Ich doesnt develop in rockwork does it???

thanks for the help you guys through my Moorish Idol experience, I am NOT leaving, just ... ... Moorish Idolless :(

thanks again!

I'm really sorry for your loss man, I have been there.

I would suggest, if I may, leave the main tank without fish for 30 days and finish treating the remaining fish. This will make sure any ich in the tank will die off. Then if you follow careful QTing of future fish you can at least try to avoid ich.

I had a large crash and lost even more fish, I took the day off I was so mad. Sucks just don't cover it.
