The Moorish Idol Thread

Zanclus Canescens - Moorish Idol

Just thought I would let you all know I have had my idol for over 2 years now. Got it Jan 21 or 23, 2006 from Liveaquaria. Still eats like a pig - nori, pellets, flake, frozen brine & mysis - sponge if it can find it.

Only thing it has destroyed in tank in 2 years - ate the sarco/toad and green finger leathers. So far that I notice, they don't pick on sps or clam in my tank.

One of my other fish gives him haircut ever few days - eliminates its long streamer. :(

I really want one but afraid to buy from these online vendors would prefer one from someones personal tank so I know it eats. I had one but the night before I was supposed to get it the guys heater got stuck on and fried his whole tank it was 2 years old in his tank :(

Covey they don't take agression. They have absolutely no defenses what so ever. They have small teeth in very weak jaws and they don't even have the caudial spine that tangs have. Their dorsal spine is useless unlike some butterflies like copperbands. To add to that, they are not very fast swimmers either.
The vast majority I see while diving is in very shallow water less than ten feet deep. They are also in deeper water but I have seen most of them shallow where there would be no large predators.

Thanks for sharing, 2 years i nice hopefully your well on your way for way more years to come! I also got mine from liveaquaria and its coming on the year mark for me now. Great fish and great personality.

A got a couple of these guys last night, did the acclimating, turned em loose and they were fine all last night, just wouldnt eat. Well , I forgot to turn the power head off and one of em was stuck to it for about two min or so. Now he has a dark circle around his front fin, and wont move his fin at all. It does not look broken or damaged at all, but he wont move it. Here is a pic of em. Do you think the fin will heal or is he doomed? He is still swimmin around ok though.

Sorry to post again so soon, but now he seems to be movin it ok, just seems to favor it a bit. Just hope it wont stress him to much, and he will eat.

Well, it has been a few days, and the one that got stuck to the powerhead is eating the most out of the two. He now has a round black ring around his fin, but is using it like it was never hurt. The other one isnt eating as much, but is eating a little. So far, veggie flake (no interest) cyclopeaze (no interest) bannana (no interest) oyster on the halfshell (no interest) mysis (no) brine (no) plankton (no) bloodworms ( will try to eat but spits out) nori (both show interest and will pick and eat) omega one flake with garlic( they both love it, and will eat till its gone) I also have been soaking all other food in garlic, hopefully they will start eating other food soon. I will post another pic later. I will try clam on the halfshell later tonight.

with good water quality and good healthy feedings should heal up in no time. I feed my idol three times a day with food soaked in selcon, garlic extreme and vita-chem.

There are several omega flakes, which one exactly? My dream is to have an idol, but I want to make sure I am well informed before I take the plunge.

Sirena, I use (omega one natural protein with garlic) My two guys seem to love it now, but the one you may get might not. These guys are picky, so far after about three days mine are eating( nori soaked in selcon, plankton/bloodworms also soaked in selcon) Everything else( so far) is ignored. Here are some pics from last night, I have a homemade plastic divider seperating them from everyone till they get accustomed to each other, and I have skipped my weekly glass scraping so i wouldnt freak em out. So please forgive me:) I also suck at photography:)

Well, this is probally a no no for sure, but here goes, I am in the process of getting a 250 gal to seperate some of these guys so bear with me. Koran angel, vermiculated angel, yellow tang, hippo tang, cinnamon clown, watchman goby, green clown goby, christmas wrass, pink and yellow dottyback, a four inch purple urchin, hrmits, snails, and a serpent star. plus the two idols. I know I am heavily stocked, but that should be not for long. So far I have had nothing more than the occasional short chase from the koran, but she seens to be losing interest in it.

just a quick update on a new food. I got some (ocean nutrition brand, green marine algae sheets) from petsmart today, it looks more red than green, and the idols attack it till its gone. I have been using the reg green nori sheets, and the eat it ok, but nothing like this! It also cimes with a free veggie clip. They even fought off my yellow tang to get it! Hope this helps someone out a little, I"ll keep everyone updated on food and health (if that is okay) And will post some more pics this week.

Sounds good there Pontiac. Good luck with them.

As for my Idol, I've had him now going on about 6 months. He eats everything and swims with my large naso tangs.

I feed a mixture of pellets and he eats them just fine. I usually buy one of each type of marine pellet that Dr. Foster & Smith carry, both small and large, and then mix them all together in a large container. That way all of my fish will get something they can eat. I also feed whole sheets of Nori that I get from the Asian market. I've found both green and red ones. My Idol will eat it just as well as the other foods.

I've also found him eating some of the sponges that grow wild in my tank. He will not eat all of the different sponges though, only certian ones. I try and keep some rocks with that type of sponge growing in my sump so that I can swap them out in the tank every once in a while.

I don't keep idols but just wanted to comment on the nori: like the previous poster, I get my nori from an asian market too, and it is MUCH cheaper than getting the stuff from petsmart. I can usually find green and red, but they are not labeled as such and it can be hard to tell in the package sometimes. I can get a pack of 50 sheets for around $6-8 , whereas petsmart sells a pack of 10 sheets for $9-10. I know not everyone has an asian market nearby, but sometimes supermarkets carry it in their asian section, albeit not as wide a selection that you can find in the asian market. and it costs a little more. But it is still cheaper than petsmart or any lfs.

Sorry to go off topic, but I follow this thread out of curiosity.
