The Official Heteractis Magnifica recording thread.

This is a duplicate thread I posted in the general reef discussion, but I am genuinely interested in hearing from others and it's not attracting much attention in the general discussion forum so I thought I'd try it here to see what folks have to say. Even if you don't own a H. Mag I'd love to hear from you just to keep this thread alive for future visitors that might have some input.

Thanks to all! As always . . .

If there is one element of my tank that generates more questions and interest than any other aspect it is clearly the anemone, and so I am becoming increasingly curious as to what the world wide experience is with these creatures. A few of the common perceptions that I know are:

1) They usually do not survive in captivity.
2) When they do survive they tend to be hardy.

My personal experience supports perception number two, but what experiences have others had? Who else has a Heteractis Magnifica? How long have you had yours? Has it produced clones? Are the clones still alive? What conditions do you keep your's in?

My anemone has produced 4 clones and clearly prefers smooth LR, VERY high flow, high light, and having clowns live with it.

So if you have experience with a Heteractis Magnifica I'd love to hear from you!!

Beautiful tank!

I also have found H. magnifica to be hardy once they are established. I've had two of mine (they cloned about 4 years ago) for over 9 years. I have another one with the purple base that I've had about 6 years (they cloned also 4 years ago). Like you, mine seem to prefer high flow, high light and a relatively smooth surface (large liverock), to attach to.

I know this thread is about anemones and i have no experiences with magnifica, but WOW that tank is amazing!

i've never seen anything like it. it is a dream!

Years and years ago, i had a ritteri by chance but very unfortunately it or i didnt make it.

then i turn to gigs that are more colorful. However, this time i do wanna try ritteri again.

and special and BIG thanx must be given to those posts includin' this fabulous one cuz all of those are bringin' me confidence and persuadin' me, too.

yet i have one question

Is it very frequent to see or acquire a colorful one from LFS or online like those green tentacles with purple tips or purple tentacles with yellow tips or whatever? I just dont wanna have a brown one

or those colorful ones were just acquired by chance? u gotta wait and wait and wait and then bingo!

Wow they clone? My lfs told me they don't clone.
How much are they worth in the US they are about 3-500 here in Sydney,Australia.

sticky this thread!

my next tank is going to be built for a Mag and it would be great to have a central location for info ... there isn't much good info on the subject right now.

Also gorgeous nem, great job. Love the colors on this one ... I go stare at its relative in Greenwich Aquaria often.

I have now seen, what in my opinion, is the most beautiful and natural looking reef tank! That is spectacular!
May I ask what you are running in terms of lighting? Your magnifica coloration is amazing!
Thank you for sharing!
Lastly, I just aquired a purple base with tan/yellow tip magnifica, very similar to yours, but not showing that amazing coloration though. It was in a tank in California for two years, traded back to a LFS where it sat for 6 months. It shipped overnight to me in Kansas extremely well and quickly adjusted to my tank within days.
I have it under a 250 watt DE 20K bulb, two MP 10 Vortechs on random settings with the flow directly at the nem, and it shares 11 baby ocellaris clowns with its neighboring gigantea.
Both nems are doing well. I hope to have them both for years to come!

Maggs

Maggs

Some of you may know i love to rehab mags. My fav anemone and i somehow have luck with them. So much so that i picked up another one to rehab this weekend. Settled right in, grabbed onto a rock.

I noticed a bunch of people mention Mags as eating plankton, It got me to thinking we never seen mags really shrink down when they are healthy but i have noticed that mine will suck in a section of tentacles and looks like its cleaning them off. Could it be cleaning off caught plankton? My tank is is over 6 years old.

Here is pic.
