By time it gets here. it will be so dissipated that it will be just another tropical storm..

EDIT: according to NOAA, there is only a 5% chance it will still have hurricane force winds by time it hits NJ and a 40% chance of Tropical Storm force winds by the time it gets here.

that's what I'm hoping for but the way my luck has been lately I'm not too optimistic.;)

No doubt it will be a big storm... but the hype its getting as a 'hurricane' makes me laugh.
If we were in NC... Id be looking for hotels inland by now... :)

In my neck of the woods even moderate winds knock out power, so tropical storm force winds will more than likely knock out my power. There are just too many trees with limbs hanging over the powerlines, or trees themselves. These darn oak trees seem to drop limbs if you look at them wrong.

I hear ya. The only issue around here is they come so infrequently. At least in the Carolina's you get them every 3 years or so and they weed out the weak trees. Up here there are lots of trees that haven't had constant high winds with higher gusts in an already rain soaked ground for 26 years. That was the issue with Gloria. lots of downed trees across the state and many people didn't get power back for weeks. That was a weak storm as far as hurricanes go as well. We were lucky at the time and lived near a hospital. Our electricity was on the same grid and a high priority. Not the case anymore...

Just as a precaution the generator is filled, and have several gallons of fuel on stand by.... worst case, I dont have to hit the gas station for a few weeks in order to buy fuel for the lawnmower and snow blower later :)

"snow blower" bite your tongue!

I am Navy, so of course no matter what happens I will have 24 hour hurricane detail on base... Did I mention I LOVE sandbags!

I live in Puerto Rico and we had this hurricane last Sunday and it was strong! I lossed power for two days. I was prepared with my generator full of gas. These kind of things you never know how strong and where they are going to hit!

Good luck to all!

OMG!! You should see the grocery store. No water on the shelves. Long lines and lots of grumpy people. All I needed was a gallon of milk. Then went to the post office. I guess people were in a hurry to get their mail out before the storm hits. THEN....I hit the pharmacy where people were stocking up on all their pills. The pharmacist told me it was crazy today.

Me.....I think I need a STAT pedicure:lolspin:

I hate to be an alarmist however, I work for Yale University and we have been going through our emergency procedures for the coming days. This involves storm tracking all current data on the storm. We have some pretty bright minds here that are preparing for the worst. Ie. we have not shut the University down for a storm event in about 20 years because the philosophy here is that education and the mission of the University never ceases at any cost. Not in this case however. We are preparing for a shutdown. I am getting very concerned about the future of my reef tank. No generator and they are speculating now 5-7 days without power if the worst of the storm were to hit and keep on the track that it is currently traveling. Good luck all.

Im nervous about losing power for multiple days.
Does everyone have a generator for the tank?
Do those computer backup's work for a couple of days?
Basically, what is everyones plan?

im going to bucket water from my sump into my display every 15 to 20 mins to keep some turnover. other than that i got nothin lmao

From what I read unless you have a lot of car batteries lying around those battery backups aren't gonna do much good. Even with a car battery attached you probably wont get a full day out of it. I could be wrong , but most of the ones I looked at weren't meant to keep anything going for long periods of time. And the big one will cost you as much as a small gas generator. In my opinion the only way to go is with a gas or propane generator.
