The Poor Man's "Elos" SPS Build. :)

Aw man! I'm trying to think what might have caused the problem. You didn't go into a lot of detail though.

Heat swing?
Leaking electricity?
False salinity reading (finally hit the breaking point for some corals)?
Cleaning supplies used near the tank?
Toys, batteries, etc dropped in the sump by your child?

What do you dose? Vitamin C overdose?

Have you Still been switching around your tank and corals? They may just a finally of had it from all of the changes. Corals like stability and sometime we forget just how fragile they are :(

I just went thought the same thing. Everything tested fine and still never found the answer. Have you make any changes as of late? With it getting warm might there have been a temp spike?

Man that sucks!!!! It's such an awesome tank. I hope things work out. I was just working on an article that I'm writing about the benefits of reef keeping. Maybe I need to write one about the stress they can bring upon us.

Goes with his occupation doesn't it!

I'm really sorry to hear about your crash Chris.

Do you happen to use or touch sunscreen very much BTW?

Apparently there are some preliminary studies that show that sunscreen usage around reefs is very harmful to the corals so i can only imagine what a little can do to our tiny little closed systems.

Hang in there Chris,

James

OMG, and Chris's tank was freaking amazing. Learning how to take care of a tank isn't that hard and is something that you can accomplish with time. Being persistent with a tank and growing it into something beautiful is something different.

Hey everyone. I'm back in town and I tested the tank with the new test kit. Looks like my old test kit was faulty. My alk was very low and i'm assuming that is what caused the necrosis. My sister dosed the tank daily while I was gone. I'm gonna get the parameters are back in order and hopefully the frags I made as a just in case will be fine. What I don't understand is how it could of dropped so low with me dosing daily. Maybe The demand was higher than I thought. Sucks, but i'm glad it's not bacterial or something more complex. I'll provide more updates as I get things in order.

On a lighter note, I added a few fish today. Ten Bartlett's from the Marshal Islands and a Powder Blue Tang.

Wow sorry to hear of your misfortune Chris. Is it possible you might have accidently made a weaker batch of alk. A similar although not as devistating scenario happened to me awhile back and that is all I could attribute it to. Now I am much more careful when measuring up a new batch.

I was going to mention this too. I have mixed a weak batch of alk before and it can make a big difference.

Sorry to hear about the problems. I always followed your thread (quietly) and LOVE your tank. I hope most of the corals make it and you can continue on...

Chris, very sorry to hear about the issue with the Acros. I am seeing some unexplained necrosis in my tank too. Haven't been able to put a finger on what is going on in my tank, I am glad you may have figured it out with getting a new test kit(which one are you using?). Have a good one, I hope you didn't lose too many things.
Matt
