The pronunciation thread

Lots of names I do not know how to pronounce, and I am sure there are others like me..... idk if this has been done yet, but I think it would be beneficial to have a list of words that are likely to be pronounced incorrectly, along with the correct pronunciation before we go walking into the LFS speaking a foreign language lol.
I will start with a few that I am not 100% sure about....

Aiptasia- I say ap-tay-sia
Koralia- I say core-aleeah
Chaetomorpha- I say chay-toe

I know there are plenty of others, so lets get this thing going.

I saw a thread where someone though anemone was pronounced most nearly like enemy... lol

My understanding is that Chaetomorpha is pronounced "Key-toe-morfa". I hear lots of people say "Cheato" like the snack food, but I believe that's wrong.

Is it Tun-ze (ton-zee)?

When anemone is pronounced, it does sound a bit like "enemy."

how about acropora although both are acceptable, I believe it is acrop-ora as apposed to acro-pora.

Zoanthid vs Zooanthid. Pronunciation is ZOE-AN-THID. Shortened is Zoa, not Zoo.
I had a list when I worked a LFS, I've forgotton most by now. But then again, this is a thread to clarify, not laugh at the bad ones.

I believe in Germany you'd hear something approaching "Toon-zah"

Tunze = The closest in German is "Toon - zuh"

Giesemann = "Geese - mon"

I've been wondering for a long time about "Centropyge"

I've been calling it "Sentro - piggy" haha, which I'm sure can't be right ??

This is how wikipedia says the plural version is pronounced----

The M is first not the N, or the common mispronunciation of Uh-NEN-oh-mee.

It is Anemone not Anenome

According to CORALS by Eric Borneman: zoh'-zan-thel'ee

In audiobooks I've heard it as "zoo-an-thell-ay" though.

I think the point is that "An emony" and "An enemy" sound awfully alike when pronounced. Yes the M and the N are reversed, but they are not awfully distinct consonants... its not like destinguishing between a C and an L. The result is a word that at least a kid would easily confuse. They sound awfully alike.

Useful thread. I actually searched RC to find out how to pronounce "chaeto" before I went to the LFS to ask for some.

TheMcs, when you say "Zoanthid shortened is Zoa, not Zoo" do you mean "Zoe-uh" or "Zoe" as in rhymes with sew?
