The REALLY BAD thing about frags

cwegescheide

YOU have been ignored!
Over the past almost year now I've been collecting frags from here and there. Then I see these awesome tanks with nice mature colonies with amazing corals and crazy coloration etc.. The thing that really stinks is that it will probably be a couple years before my tank has nice sized full colonies.. :(

So lets see some tanks that grew from little frags to full nice sized colonies. Oh and how long it took to get there would be nice. ;)

I feel you pain, I have about 40-50 frags in my 75g and only about 4 very small colonies, I can't wait to watch them grow out though.

I love the process of growing out small frags...I agree it is painfully slow at times but slow is fine by me. I think a lot of corals will color up more once they hit colony size. I sure hope that is the case with some of my frags. No pictures from me yet, it will take another year or two :D

IMO, that's much of the fun - taking a small piece and making it your piece of that lineage.

I've got more, but it's time to go fishing

Got my green slimer in Aug 2003 for free at a local reef club meeting ... about 2". Sadly, no pic for the first 5 months, though good growth.

Went from a darker green to a very light, almost yellow coral, now more towards darker green [feeding more recently] ... and have been fragged probably every 6 months.

This one is March of 2006 :) Even bigger now.

Takes time, but it was wonderful last December to have the guy who gave me the frag come see what I had done with it.

I've sure got my share of smaller colonies, frags just growing out too. Thankfully pics have shown me that patience and stability do some phenomenal things.

All of my sps were grown from frags:)

Most took 2 or three years to grow out and have been fragged from time to time themselves. Several of the smaller pieces have been with me about a year. A few have been with me > 4 years and have been fragged back at least once if not more.

Hey Fishdoc! After I put the frags I got from you in my tank thats when I started thinking about this. Those frags looked soo nice I cant wait for them to grow! :) Yes I do agree it is fun to watch things grow. Shortly after I set up my reef I started documenting coral growth once every few months. That way I can really tell things are really coming along.

Would be nice to fast forward a year or two just to see what its going to look like!! I think I'll just call the psychic friends network and they can tell me about it...

I think I've seen that pick of your slimer a few times Mark and every time I just :eek2: :eek2::eek2: :eek2:

hey fishdoc what is that purple stag to the left of the bright yellow coral in the 2nd pic. I think I have that and it's a very fast grower.

It is a fast grower once it gets to a ceartain size. That's really the thing about frags. They grow slow at first when getting encrusted etc.... and then when they get to a ceartain size(a little smaller than a baseball) they just take off! Especially milles and stags.

My 2 inch blue ac. aculeus came in brown and shrunken, with a lot of encrusting growth below. I've done everything I can think of for 2 months, with just a little paling and plumping of one polyp head to show for it. I had it on the top in high flow. I put it on the bottom sand, in high flow. I've fed it cyclopeeze, phyto, and Kent Coral Vite and Reef Essentials.

Yesterday I moved it 5 inches over. Last night something happened, and it turned lighter on nearly every branch and is plumping up. I'm pleased as if it had turned into a colony overnight.

Watching these things grow has its charm.

This was my bali slimer purchased from a fellow reefer at frag swap

Here it is approximately one year later!

It's difficult to judge from the photo, but the colony is more than 3x larger than the original size it was when purchased. I have others to show, will have to post later!
