The Rebirth/Rebuild of my 180g sps thread

Well guys thought I share this video of my tank that I shot with my new toy, the iPad2!
Great device!
Anyhow it starts off witht the coral banded shrimp that has decided for now to take refuge at the bottom of the tank inside one of the caves.

Of course the fish seem to be fine as they used to swim away when I came near the tank now they follow daddy cause they know who feeds them, lol!

Toward the end don't miss the swiss guard basslet!

D'kingfisher I am in the process of taking pics but added some inverts, a cleaner shrimp, coral banded shrimp and a 50 snails and about 25 blue and red legged hermits.
No other additions as I am trying to get my water quality upto par before I start adding corals.
My old corals are so far fine but i need to make sure that anything new coming in will be coming into a fresh clean top notch water.
Also I am looking to have a growth of coralline algae as when it starts growing then I know my water parameters are in check.
But everytime I go into WWC my mouth just waters!!!!

Well everybody it certainly has been a long time since I have posted.
The holidays were extremely busy and on top of that my sister had a major stroke.
She is in rehab right now and thank god she is doing much, much better. Her prognosis is really positive.

Due to not enough time I decided that I had to use my time wisely with my on going efforts. Going slow is definitely in the reef keeping hobby a good thing.
The tank is doing really great.
The water parameters are super good.
Ph 8.3
Sal 1.023
Alk 8
Ca 450
Mg 1350
Phos 0.05
No .08

Last week I took the plung and bought 2 monti's. A Tyree purple rim cap and a regular red cap monti. I love these as the grow with swirls and grow quickly and will fill the open water space nicely.

I unfortunatley lost my swiss guard basslet due to jumping out of tank. Can't understand why since I have no other wrasses that would bother it. But it found just the right spot!

As I stated time is really not on my side so I ordered from liveaquaria.com.
I purchased and due to arrive today another swiss guard basslet and a golden pygmy angelfish.
I have been waiting for my lfs stores to carry one of these beauties (golden pygmy ) but they just don't come in on a regular basis. The last time I saw one around my area was about 5 yrs ago.

I am truly excited!!!

Nice adds. That little golden angel is going to be really cool.

Thanks SoCalDude! There is something about that little Pygmy angel that I love. The one that received is about 1 1/2 inches. Very active and not hiding too much. I hope to have him for a loooooong time!

Ok this weekend two fishes arrived from liveaquaria.com and I purchase a flame hawk from WWC.
Everyone is doing fine and acting like they are supposed too.

The Golden Angel is just as cute as can be from the moment I acclimated it to the intro to the tank it shows signs of fiestyness. Even the purple tang could not keep it from going to where it wanted to go.

Here it is in the holding cup right before it went into the tank.

No torn fins or signs of stress!

The swiss guard of course did its hiding thing but soon came out and about.

Don't look too closely or you'll see the scratches on the glass.

Here is the flame hawk. What a gorgeous fish!

This fish has character and a sense of humor IMO!

Horrible pic but these guys are ALWAYS hiding!

A hitchhiker on one of the snails, some kind of encrusting coral. Looks like a soft coral almost gorgonia type.

Well guys I did some adjusting to some of my equipment.
I calibrated my ph probe and I was able to finally see that my ph fluctuates between 7.92 with lights off to 8.22 when lights have been on for 6 hrs.
Is this drop too much?
I was reading that the addition of kalk also increases alk. When I tested the Ca was 440, the alk was 11.2, the Mg was 1100. My alk is a little too high. I know I need to adjust these parameters especially since my coral load is not that high, yet. I also know I need to dose Mg. and increase it to at least 1300.Again not quick rush to increase because I do not have a large coral bio load.
I plan to do a 25% water change. First for one it is due and for the second reason is, cutting away any excess nutrients that may be building up in the reef like phosphates and nitrates.

I did add some fish over weekend.

This nice regal yellow blue tang

I also wanted to let everyone know that the regal anglefish is eating flake food already!

The Golden angle is busy throughout the tank and is doing well too! He is a bit cryptic but does make entrances and exits throughout the reef.

My caps have started to grow as the edges are showing signs. I will post a pic this weekend.

Here are some of the pics I promised of those caps plus a few others and a couple of new additions as well.

Blue ridge Tyree monti cap
Compare the pic from the post above to the pic of it now. Not explosive growth but enough that you can see the ridge starting to happen

WWC red Monti
Same thing compare pic above with this latest one

Finally was able to capture a pic of the cleaner shrimp this morning when the lights were off and only filtered light was coming in from the window.

Here is a pic of the green chromis going after the seaweed. They will eat anything!!!

Here are my latest NEW additions

I picked this one up at WWC. Not very common. Its called a Stylocoenellia sp
RSCN7625.jpg

I replaced the mystery wrasse that had jumped out of the holding 55g tank back when I was redoing the tank. This is such a good looking wrasse!
RSCN7781.jpg

Possum wrasse is a funny fish. I have seen this fish look dead and then it swims around like its alive and woke up!
