The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Thanks for the kind words everybody! Yes I like the fish as well, but makes for a difficult fish selection in a small reef tank. Anything smaller will be eaten, and almost everything larger won't fit into my tank. I rely on my new additions being complete jerks or lightning quick!

Blackthunda - Tank looks great! I like the open sand space in the front. Did Boret have any influence on that one?:)

Michael - I will check out your link soon. The pick you posted looks great though! Very nice and clean tank! And congrats on the almost 2nd split!!!! I was around for the first one, and am excited about the 2nd, and 3rd, and 4th............how long till we get our own sticky?!?!?!?!

Congrats on the split. Shows how much is happenin' in the corner.

Seems that a sticky would be appropriate now.

Luck to all.

it wont happen unfortunately, were a community of around 80 members, 20-25 regular posters, theres 3-4 thousand members on rc daily who are not interested in corners, ive mentioned a forum before and there have been posts in feedback by others suggesting the same, well that wont happen, as for a sticky, usually the thread needs to win thread of the month to get stickied :)

Cheers everyone!!!

Don't worry about sticky, with all the activity in this thread it is always on top :) This is my home inside RC

very true boret, good point, however we can always campaign for (new to the hobby thread of the year) and ask waterkeeper to sticky it:lol:

I think, what we need to do is get one of our tanks up to TOTM status, then get the thread nominated for Thread of the month (also TOTM? confusing)...

So, who's going for TOTM first?

good idea, i think all members should post a latest picture so we can vote for whos closest to that level and then all join forces to help him push it a little closer to being noticed by the RC hierarchy as a future possible TOTM.

I love that idea! From what i can remember without looking back through everything, and without seeing any updated pics I'd have to say Sdoggf or Boret have a good chance! Both of thier tanks are completely packed with corals, and very nice colors. Fish selection in Sdoggf's tank is not a huge variety, but the Wrasses that he does have are very nice. I know Boret has his tank loaded with some very nice fish as well. I'll grab that camera this weekend and get my latest pics up sometime next week. I'd love a corner to get recognized as TOTM, and as far as Michael and myself go, I'm sure we'd both love to see a Fully Mixed Reef take the cake!:)

Maybe we should ask for this to be moved to the "Reef Discussion" forum. I would have never seen it if someone did not point it out to me. How many experienced guys really cruise the New to Hobby forum anyway?

I'm all for voting up a corner tank as TOTM, we have some very nice examples in this thread.

One of the "problems" with this thread not being recognized for the content that it offers, is that it is a thread. What I mean is it's chocked full of great tips and advise, well over 100 pages of info, but it's very hard to get to. Those of us who have been here since the beginning know how much good build info, DIY info, Q&A info are in here... it's quite incredible actually... I'd wager that from a tank-setup point of view, this thread has just about everything covered...

What if we created a new thread to move the discussion to. Someone could skim all the info out of this thread and create a "basics of corner tanks" thread, where in the first posts have the collective content replayed in an orderly fashion... we can then continue the discussions on that thread...

Most of the Thread's that are nominated start with this style of summary information as the first post.

Just an idea for our discussion and no, I'm not volunteering to create the thread...LOL I'm just an idea man, i do not like to actually do anything.

HAHAHAHA!!!!!! I have to say that I'm with you on being the idea man. I don't like doing anything either.........except I don't ever have good ideas........:(

Husky - I look on the New to the Hobby section pretty frequently. I usually start with that and work my way down the different sections, trying to help out where I can. Or sometimes I just make random comments that have nothing to do with anything!

...........................The snausberries taste like snausberries!

So I have a 36g corner bowfront with a 24" 65w PC fixture across the middle.
I built a hood for the tank, and I was thinking about adding some lights to the top across the corners and/or front/back.

What would the cheapest way to do two 12" lighting strips?
Whether it be T5 or PC.
Any specific products or links would be greatly appreciated, I'm a complete lighting newb.
Thanks!

Edit:
Could I get a ballast (like this http://www.lightbulbsdirect.com/page/001/PROD/E254PUVH), two 12" reflectors and two 12" lights, and simply bolt it up? Would I need anything else?

Hi there CoreyK I personally like the look of Metal Halides. A single 175W with 1 or 2 24" T12 Super Actinics will work beautifully. The advantage of the T12 is the internal reflector that make it very easy to place wherever you want. I also think that the POP you get out of T12 is just fantastic. A single 175w 14k or 20 bulb will give you tons of light and allow you to grow great SPS corals.

Hookup the idea is fantastic. The thread does indeed have tons of info. I think that a single person posting a summary is a bit much to ask from Michael (LOL :) ) but maybe if we all post about what it is that we think important and that has worked for our tanks maybe we can make it easier to get a new thread together.
Just an idea for our discussion and no, I'm not volunteering to create the thread...LOL I'm just an idea man, i do not like to actually do anything.
Btw is that why you are Consulting services Manager and not just Consulting services!!?? :) :D :D jk

I think the honors to start the new thread should go to Michael who, a day before Christmas, 8 months ago, started it all. (over 100 pages in 8 months with 35850+ views!!)

Husky_1 I think that is a good point. I do however browse RC differently. I normally start with the new replies to whatever thread I am subscribed to.... getting about 30 emails from RC everyday :), I then move to the New Posts (Get New and Get Daily buttons up top)

I have to admit that it took me a while to find this thread, and I point it out to people when I see that they have a corner tank. Whatever makes it more accessible would be fantastic.

About TOTM.... wow, you see some amazing tanks in TOTM so it is difficult to imagine that our little reefs will make it there, but Sdoggf's should definitely be considered. Thanks for the vote of confidence on mine Reefkeeper15. :)

But let's get started with Thread of TM (I think it will deserve that status at one point. ;)

I too have got a wealth of info from this thread more so than any other.. most of my threads just sit there with no response or helpful info thanks all for the help and good read

for way too long and there was no trick i feel conned; UR AVATAR IS A LIE SIR!!!
see what I mean!

my suggestion would be to do a blog of corners with the information gathered in some kind of order and then everyone save a link to it in their favorites folder, it can be updated and stuff removed as and when we need it to be, and we can keep this thread going as it is and feed the new blog, just a thought :)

Whatever happens to this thread, I'll still be posting all my questions here first. There is so much non-biased info from all you guys on here, it makes me feel that when I ask a question, I'll be getting an honest answer. There is a little need for creativity and ingenuity just to have these tanks up and running, so I know most people on here are pretty clever, and the great ideas always keep coming. We've got 2 electricians (but don't look under our tanks right Michael?:)), at least one awesome photographer (and DIY specialist!), and countless others who've built some very complex curved or many sided stands/canopies, and some sump/fuge/ATO combos that are up there with the best of the best! I would definately recomend people to trust the info from this thread, corner owners or not!
