The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Sal, Windy just pointed to the link that I was going to show you. I posted my experience with H2O2 there as far as how to use it.

Thanks for the help guys, I'll report on the status of my upgrades once I have started changing things up, and I'll give u guys a FTS before anything is changed so u can see just how bad its gotten :headwally:

Here is my tank with just a 14k iwasaki 175 watt metal halide. The picture is pretty close to how it looks in person. The iwasaki is a beast of a bulb, putting out more par then a bunch of 250watt mh.

and here is a pic with the 175 metal halide, and 3 x36inch t5 and 1x24 inch t5 on a icecap 660 ballast so they are all overdriven.

this pic is quite a bit of color loss via the camera. Much less green / yellow, more purple / violet / and red.

Sorry for the crappy pictures, forgot the digital cam at home, had to take em with my phone.

and now u can see the state of the problems i am dealing with concerning nuissance algae!!! :headwalls:

Love the first pic, nice little caves in the rocks.
The peroxide treatment on my Xenia rock HA has worked like a charm. It's gone and showing no signs of coming back.

So if I drain my tank down say 3/4 of the way and left a few inches at the bottom for the fish to swim around in, and pour peroxide on the affected areas, and let it sit for 2-3 mins (corals exposed to the air) and then refill the tank....

Would that work on ridding my hair algae problem?? (except the bottom 1/4 that still has hair algae which i can get rid of with manual removal / phosphate remover, etc) Correct?

Not sure, I would ask SimonSKL as he has done a lot of experimentation. If you could take each rock out and treat it, that would be better. Also I am not sure peroxide will work on bubble algae.

I won't just pour full strength peroxide on the affected areas as it may be too much peroxide ended up in your tank. Instead I would use a dropper and put a few drops of 50:50 3% H2O2 in each spot.

I would also have extra freshly mixed saltwater on standby after refilling the tank and do an emergency water change if your corals look stressed. Good luck!

This is what my tank looked like in Oct 2011

There are still some GHA on the bottom rocks but they are more manageable now. I just manually pull them and use a toothbrush on them.

Thats a gorgeous tank. I didnt even notice the hair algae at first. I guess its kind of like when the tank is not up to par and I have guests over that go "oooooohhhh...aaaahhhhhhhh" over the tank and I'm thinking "WHAT ARE YOU NUTS?!?!! LOOK AT THE HAIR ALGAE... AND THE BUBBLE ALGAE... AND THE SAND LOOKS DIRTY, AND THE POLYPS AREN'T FULLY EXTENDED"

but really, looks very good compared the to 2011 pic. I'm hopin mine will look 1/2 that good in the amount of time. I think im going to end up pulling out rocks and scrubbing them with a tooth brush, followed by a quick dunk in ro water, and then a couple splashes of diluted H2O2 in certain areas and rebuild the rockwork from scratch. Needs more flow anyways, too many dead spots.

That brings up another question, I want to get an ecotech pump and I notice alot of people have the mp40 for this size tank.... but they throttle it back to 50-60% cause its too powerful... sooooo why not just go with an mp10 and save a ton of $$ and run it a bit harder? Am I missing something here? :spin2:

dutch im lovin your tank, what lighting are you running, and whats your fish stock list? if you have a build thread id love to see it, ill get a FTS when i get home from work...

Thanks, Fla. Id like to see your tank too and a build thread if you have one. I dont have a build thread, I had enough trouble as it is just trying to post a pic. Im not too computer savvy.
Anyways, the tank is 3 years old this month. I had been running a 1x250 phoenix with actinic pcs, but upgraded to a lumatek style reflector with a 400w Radium 5 mos ago. I hung it a little higher to get a better spread on the tank with less of the spotlight effect that I had with the 250. I have had good response from the corals, better color and growth especially from the acros.
Fish stock list:
Bartletts anthias
Flame angel
Potters angel
Potters wrasse
Radiant wrasse
Melanarus wrasse
black perc
citron goby
and a foxface that is quickly outgrowing the tank
