The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Oh and I also have hardwoods so am a little worried. If you didn't have to move your tank for access would you still go the casters route. I suppose it makes it easier to clean spills as you don't have to worry about water that creeps under it.

I will be monitoring salinity that way if the is a big deviation I can shut down the ato in case that is the cause. I can not afford another flood. We had one caused by a washer two years ago, hence all new hard woods throughout the house.

Forgot the lighting. Wanted to go led so was thinking about either picking up some used AI/radions or going the Chinese black box route. I was thinking if I went the black box route I could get 3 so I would have good coverage but just run them at low power.

Your cabinet is amazing. I like the way your canopy opens. I was trying to figure out the best way to rig that. What is you canopy height? If I went with 3 fixtures I may have to mount them a little higher.
My canopy is a bout 6'3" I think. With 3 lights, coverage would be good at almost any height. Mine are on slides so I can move them for access. Kessils would also be an excellent choice. With PG&E electric prices, efficient lights pay for themselves.

Did you extend your cabinet out behind the tank? How did you fit 53 gallons down there? I love the integrated storage.

For skimmer I am now thinking aquamaxx q2. Small footprint for the rated ability and good quality from what I can see.

I have a 3 and 1 year old so I feel your pain. Doing all of this late night does not make for the best work.
I actually have 88 gal of tanks below although they will never hold that much water. There is a 20 for RODI storage, and 15 for salt mix. Yes the corner the tank sits in had extra space so I added about 4" on one side and 12" on the other.

I am still trying to tune my Vertex skimmer which is my first. Here it is on a stand I made. I have since added an Avast Swabbie but should have spent the time adjusting the skimmer. I have a nutrient problem and just added a chaeto sandwich to try and keep the chaleto growing instead of floating and dieing

The casters I bought were quite expensive. The last big tank I had was 55 gallons and rolled off its stand crushing two others during the Loma Prieta earthquake. I moved out of my room for a month while it dried, was inspected and recarpeted. These 92s are much wider and more stable if you have a good stand so I was probably over reacting with the casters. The access in back was a natural result of adding casters, not the other way around, although it has allowed me to pack a lot more in without having a fish room. I spent a lot of time finding ways to maximize space.

I have had several spills which made the flooring swell but it seems to dry out back to the way it was. Having casters does make mopping up easier and more complete. My spills were all RODI or its waste line which I tried to catch in a bucket in the beginning because of the drought. The few saltwater drips have not been a problem at all. You should probably assume the floor will need to be refinished when the tank is moved some day.

My RODI is behind the fridge on the other side of the wall from the tank. It is plumbed through the wall and I have a sewer connection for the tank too.

If I used both pipes in the overflow for the herbie I would have to run an external return over the top. If I lived anywhere else I wouldn't worry. But with it being so close to the wall in the case of an earthquake I am afraid the line would get broken and I would be pumping water onto the floor. Is that a crazy concern? I was hoping with a stable stand I could make it through a quake without breaking the entire tank but I would see that return as a weak spot.

I'm going to steal a lot from your design! Love the sliding rails for the lights. It's going to take me some time to fully digest all the info you have given me.

I think a single pipe overflow may be more risky than an earthquake. There are also flexible pipe options that are less prone to damage. Single drains are noisier than multi drain systems. Add a float switch, pressure switch, or optical level sensor if you go with only one drain pipe. In an earthquake there are no guarantees. One that is big enough to break plumbing will probably empty a third of your tank onto the floor from waves over the sides. That is what happened to our pool in a 6.9 magnitude quake near the epicenter.

Mine is not a low budget build so be aware. The only money saver was I already had all the tools.

Is anybody using the Current USA Orbit Marine Pro LED with a 54 gallon corner?

I will have my 54 corner in a month and that's the light I will be using. I have it now for my 34 Neo nano and I get good coverage. I don't have to many corals yet but thw ones I do have seems to be doing well.

I am trying to decide on sand for my 92 gallon. Because of the problems we have getting good flow do you end up with lots of potential sand tornadoes? I like the look of finer grain but just worry about that

I realize this could have already been addressed in this thread, but only just found it and it is 150 pages long :eek1:

I am starting to look at getting a larger reef tank and my options for location are pretty limited. My wife mentioned to me that she thought a bowed corner tank would be good to allow more water volume while not encroaching too much floor space in the room.

I started to read how much a PITA they can be since they are not popular and therefore things are not designed for them, so I'm still weighing options, but the one thing I am still struggling with is where you can buy bowed front glass corner tanks?? Who makes these?

Also, I think a great design would be to have surface skimming run both back walls, but not sure if there is a pre-built tank like this or if I would have to get something custom made to suit my wants/needs.

EDIT: While I am pretty handy, I just don't have the time to spend on a lot of DIY stuff like a stand or sump, etc. So I'm willing to pay to get what I'm looking for.

Aqueon made mine and I built my own overflow. The standard overflow is only in the corner. I wouldn't get too carried away with overflow size. One side should do fine and is MUCH easier to build. Get the standard aquarium instead of reef ready if you want a custom overflow.

I just purchased my aqueon 54 corner from petsmart they are clearencing them out so you may get a good deal mine was 250 for the tank and stand.

I just filled my 54 G corner 2 days ago. one problem I have been looking into is powerhead placement to get good flow but not create a whirl pool does anyone have any ideas?

my return pump is 800GPH ( it is also pushing a check valve open I feel like it cuts the flow down a bit)

2 Hydor 600GPH power heads

Im looking into a bigger power head around a 1300GPH to mix with one of my 600 GPH due to my flow being little weak but this is what I have to work with at the moment. Right now I just what to avoid the whirlpool effect.

Upgrading my 92. Any recommendations?

Upgrading my 92. Any recommendations?

Hey all, I'v got a 92gal corner bow and want to upgrade, but absolutely love the corner look and dont think I could go back to a regular rectangular tank. I am looking at the Tsunami 190 gallon quarter cylinder from Fishtanks Direct, but have never had an acrylic tank before and don't see many reviews. Do any of you have experience with one of these, or have any recommendations on where to get a quality 200gal corner tank at a reasonable price?

Do tanks in a corner count as corner tanks if they are 4-sided? I have my 120 as the hypotenuse of the two corner walls. coral placement is getting a little tricky with so many viewing angles.

Beautiful tank Jason, What size is it and where did you get it? I am trying to get a larger tank, stand, canopy combo and really like the look of yours.

The only disadvantage I am aware of is scratching. If you are willing to be careful and replace cleaning tools with appropriate ones, I don't see a problem. I am not careful or regular enough with my cleaning to go acrylic on a big tank.
