The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

I can't see the classified forum quite yet :/
I was worried a single fixture might give me some shadowing however I suppose that isn't the case with my current cfls

Go with the wide angle lens kit and you'll be fine. With it mounted about 8-9" off the water with the 120 degree lens kit.........you'll get full coverage.

I like the gyre. While I have yet to see it with corals in the tank....it seems like it does a great job of letting stuff settle to the bottom as Jay r said. I only have mine at about 60% and extremely quiet. That's one of the reasons I opted for the 150 instead of the 130. I would rather have a larger one that is running at half power than a smaller one that is full power... def a big noise difference between full and half power.

How long have you had yours Tangers? Mines not loud per se, but if I crank it up to say 30 - 40% ( on pulse ) you can really hear it whirring. I hear they bed in but I've had mine a few months and no change yet..

All in all, still a great product though if you aren't too fussy about silence, corals seem happy with the flow too.

I've had mine running now for about 3-4 weeks. When I first fired it up I honestly can say I wasn't that impressed. It seemed very loud. But it was in a dead silent room and the only thing running. I can say now that it has been running and the rest of the tank is going I can't hear it at all at about 60-70% on constant. I haven't tried other features yet...figured I'd play more once tank starts getting some inhabitants. I think it got broke in and the berrings got lubed up better as time went. I run a water blaster return pump with a herbie style drain system so all in all the tank is very quiet...and so is the gyre.

I'm glad to hear about the gyre, my main interest is soft corals as I enjoy corals that sway a bit in the current the most. So setting the gyre on a pulse seems like a good alternatovr to mp10s/40 and a controller

Ahh ok, i've run mine on pulse constantly.. so let's see how you get on later when you start playing with the settings ;)

I only have positive things to say about water movement. I have a row of Torch corals that bank up one side of my rock work, and the sway created in all of them is very appealing to the eye.

It is certainly a good bit of kit. But you will need to run in reverse every now and then to clear it out. You'll be surprised how much crap comes out when it spins backward!

Do you have your paddles alternated or do you just run the "stock" set up in reverse every now and then? I originally had it on alternating when I set it up but found when I run the stock wheels in reverse it moves next to nothing for water given the wheels are directional. I have been thinking of switching one of the wheels out and running it in alternating mode.

While this initially sounds like a good idea.. I'm not sure that would work, wouldn't one side just be blowing backwards / downwards with only half the flow coming across the tank? Could end up with a bare section of tank, I think it would just blow out the sand bed?

You can be the guinea pig! lol Let me know how you get on!

I ended up picking up the reefbreeders photon 32 during the 4th sale.

I had a crappy cfl that was giving off a lot of white light, so initially the blue in the reefbreeders was very jarring to me. After a day I have gotten use to it and I am liking them good deal with all the features for the price. I currently have them rested on my glass top going to attempt to hang them today/tomorrow. I do have a bit of the "disco ball effect" I had read about I hope once I mount them properly that will be diminished.

You have to order it with the 120 optics, or you can just remove the optics yourself which will give you the 120 degree output.

8-10" off the water should give you best results.

I'm trying to follow this, but i get lost at the optics.
I thought the reefbreeders were the answer, but they do have so many options.

I have a 54 gal corner & i'm looking for an LED w/ programmable settings that'll serve me for all and any corals I might want (i right now have none) where the light costs ~$300. I know that could be too little and if so just say so .....

And if so, if i go with something at that cost i should expect to keep only soft corals?

Thx for the recommendations as always

I've been looking at 2 Kessill A360we's on my 55g corner tank, to replace the Aquaray set up I'm currently running alongside 2 No. T5s. These are a little higher than $300 but not much?

I'm successfully keeping SPS although sticking to the easier Monti Digitata's while my system matures.

Has anyone put a Gyre in a smaller corner tank, like the 54gal?

I'm debating going from my 2 - MP10's to one Gyre...........but I haven't really seen much info on one in a smaller corner tank.

Any info?

Thanks,

Steve

I'm coming up on 2 years with my corner tank up. I'd like to upgrade to the 92, but everything is going so good with my 54 that I hate to mess things up.

I have a tank full of RBTA's. Started with 1 two years ago. There's about 15 in the tank now. I've given away 10. At this point, I'll never own another.
