The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Ill see if I can fing you the link, its hard to describe...
you have to fish the fish your looking for, dont pull out the trap until the one you want swims in.

Well if it makes anyone feel better.... Sunday I purchased a Yellow Clown Goby, among other fish. I found out it is very likely to pick at SPS, which when I came home today to find him picking... So I tore the entire tank apart... all of the LR was ripped out and put on the floor, corals and all, while I caught this little bugger. He is now in the fuge and my tank looks like an atom bomb went off in it... As far as I can see I have not lost anything, yet... but damn.... Not the same as your loss Bernie, and not trying to take anything away from your loss, just sharing my own issues...

There's a lot of muttered swearing at my house tonight... and I did snap a photo of the "after the wreck" tank... but I do not have the heart to post it.

Oh, and my new doughnut coral is receeding... three days after buying him... it keeps getting worse... i was watching him at the LFS for a week where he was FINE, i must have damaged him somehow. I haven't posted photos because i was hoping he would start to recover, but it's getting worse. Ideas?

that sucks hookup, but I think i've tried to figure out the coke bottle thing. I think i've done it right I have it in the tank letting the fish get used to it. Hopefully by the time i catch it, it won't be to late...

Photos man, got to have photos. I cannot wrap my head arround that bottle idea.

I'm getting a Hawaiian Flame Angel shortly so I won't be putting my tank back together until after he proves he can be a model fish... It's at the LFS on hold for me, i have to pick him up. My fingers are crossed, many people are able to keep the dwarf angels and I'm hoping i'm going to be one of them.

Hookup sorry to hear about your mess, I didnt know those clown gobies were such a terror, you like the 3rd person I hear this from, it looks like you need to figure out the bottle thing out too. You should be ok w the dwarf angel, they are hit or miss, but more likely to hit than alot of other fish, you should be fine, but it is a good Idea to keep the tank not set up since it is already like that just incase.

BTB, please post pics of your creations so that if you did do it right others can learn because I cant find the thread & it is essential to know in this hobby, with the kinds of fish and corals we like to keep.

This is mine before the caulerpa plague....a few roots in the rocks survived cooking, and it's gross. I am currently employing a sea hare to try to cope. A 54g tank just can't support most things that will eat the stuff.

what is that on top of your tank?
Ya i was hoping to see if it worked before i put up pics... but its easy to explain what I did. I cut the two liter bottle about 6" down from the cap. Then I cut around the cap just large enough for the selec fish to swim into... I don't really want my tangs to go in there.. Then i turned it upside down into the bottom half adn glued it in place.. Cut little holes for water to get into but small enough where food won't get out... I'll try to get some pics up soon

sk8r welcome to the club, nice to see your tank, hope you help out here with some questions, first thing i say to corner tank owners is do you have a sump and if so lets see under your tank in your cabinet:)

put a pic of your fav if ya got it!

Sk8r a fox would clear all that up for you but your right, its tough to house one in a 54, you can get a tiny one for a few months, their easy to catch as long as you only try to catch it once or dont try catching anything when its there, they catch on quick. I just put seaweed on the clip, when he swam up scooped him w the net & off to my friends tank he went.

btb72, That sounds an awful lot like what I said, Im glad you understood it though. When ever you do get those pics please post them for us, a lil diy, lol.

phish guy, considering I only have 3 fish left (knock on wood) I'd have to say its my clowns, they have been w me for a very long time. My Potters is nice too.

well i did like the coral beauty and the flame angel but man how i hate those fish now... but i'd have to say the copperbanded butterfly just becuase I have never seen one so big and do so well... or the powder blue

Thanks, Bernie. Had a scribbled rabbit once that would do it, but it was too big, and it started eating my frogspawn.

I'll certainly let people know how the sea hare does. It's about the size of a golf ball, and has stuck right close where I put him, at least. They say they have a sense of smell like a bloodhound, so if anything else were attracting him/her/it/all-of-the-above, he could move. So I have hopes.

He arrived in good health, has shown no disposition to ink, and appears to have set to work.

That's Christmas deer on the tank. ;) Below that is my light kit, specs in my sig, and a 9" fake laminate rim that supports the light. Got it from the tank mfg. But anybody could make one of laminate, glue, and light pine. It just overlaps the rim and sits on it.

The sump is 30g, 20 of which is fuge, and there is nothing but lights in the stand: I drilled two holes in my floor and sent the lines to the basement, which is why (silly me) I have it powered by an Iwaki 100 that could send the water to the 18th floor (it's a ranch style house) if I had one. I dial it back a bit. I use 2 opposed Sea Swirls for flow, does great. And I have my skimmer set on eggcrate above my return pump chamber of the sump, freeing the central chamber for a fuge, and routing the effluent back to the downflow chamber of the sump, where any bubbles have to thread their way through a large ball of macro (about basketball size or larger, before encountering the Iwaki or the mag 5 skimmer pump. No, it ain't neat: that rope tie-up happened when I discovered spaflex stretches------and I haven't changed it since.

I will eventually try the PBT, but I want a small speciment & it will be the last fish I add, they are too nice not to try though. Nice Lemonpeel Michael, I love it, its one of my fav angel, but have a notorious reputation for nipping, glad you got a good one there...
I like the Madarin as well, Im still undecided as too if I will try on or not in my new list, but prob not a lil to reclusive for me.

im jealous sk8r, id love a room for my kit, at the moment mines stuffed under the stairs cupboard, and mrs michael is no amused:lol: she dosent know it yet but when i build my refugium (the build will be on here soon) i will have to have my top of resevoir on show outside the tank:D

My favorite fish was my ywg, who I suspect was foully murdered by his roommate, a rapidly growing tiger pistol shrimp, who has now taken up with the hussies next door, the highfin gobies. Pistol shrimp ARE known to murder prospective mates of 'their' fish. I say the highfins are going to have to watch it. I'd like to remove this guy to the sump, but catching him in a 50lb rock pyramid is not an easy thing. I may try the baited bottle trick.

Lol, Michael, perhaps you can find an entertainment armoire with doors at what we call a 'garage sale'. They make great beside-the-tank equipment concealment.
