The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Misled, so you did away with the CL altogether?

It's still in there for now, but yea, once the sea swirl is here I'm gonna take it out.

Is it your opinion that the 54 corner is too small for a CL? I'm asking because I've thought of trying it but am not sure that it is feasible.

Hey Jesse,

I see you used at MJ 900 for the mod. I was told by my LFS that the MJ's are all the same "pump" and only the impeller is changed, so under that logic you could have used an MJ 400?

Can you or anyone else confirm?

I was able to pickup two crocea clams at my LFS i'm very happy with both, who in less than 24hrs attached to the rock work with their foot...

I've also fixed the aquascaping, and IMO it's better than ever!

Photos of all incoming when I get home.

I just ordered a Tunze Turbelle Stream 6065 to replace the two 6025 pumps in my 54 gallon tank. I modified the 6025 pumps for more output by cutting away some of the internal tunnel around the impeller, and the increase in flow was very noticeable. Has anyone modified a Tunze 6065 to increase flow beyond the factory-claimed 1700 gph?

That's partially true.

JohnWin84, what size is our tank?
I love the pentagon pics! :)

It a 65 corner pentagon so 30 *30 *24

One of the best things I ever did for my tank, re flow and water management, was to split the return line and get 2 Sea Swirls and mount them facing each other on the straight sides of my 54g bow. The water movement gets everywhere, and the fish love the chaotic flow. Since they swing, and get out of time with each other and phase back in, they mean no more fish hanging in one spot and no place for detritus to settle permanently.

I plan on putting the sea swirl on the overflow. I have a pic in my mind how it will look, but we know how that goes. The mj's will be on the side walls facing each other.

My pentagon is very similar but not sure of the dimentions, I should check at home because I think mine was 57/60 or 65gal not sure.

well i havent, but id be interested to hear about it like you

I like the sea-swirls but didn't want to use them because my return-flow from my sump is around 400gph, which I can increase to 1700gph, but do not want to.

So I considered a closed-loop, and then my wife stopp'ed beating the living crap out of me with pots and pans, so I agreed I wouldn't tear the walls apart for a closed loop... and the dream of sea-swirls died.

Michael, it looks like you need a satellite cabinet. Some piece of furniture, a chest or something, that can sit next to the stand and fit in with the rest of your décor. This will increase your available space to house components and allow you more flexibility.
+1

That would be an ideal fix.

In order to get a separated refugium to work, you would need to have it elevated higher than the sump so you can gravity feed it back into the sump. I think in order to accomplish that, you would need to drill a hole to feed plumbing through the center section of your stand, and I'm not sure what that would do to the integrity of the stand. A small PVC sized hole probably wouldn't be that bad though. Here's an example that I used under my 55g... obviously you're under a bit of space constraint, but should give you the basic idea.

You would need to get your electric separated somehow though. The last thing you want is is falling into the fuge. Perhaps if you could build a little stand to raise the fuge in the stand, you could place it underneath.

As far as the sand bed in the fuge. I would skip it all together. In a refugium that small I doubt you'll get any real benefit from it, or enough to notice an impact on your tank. I would just pack it with macro, maybe some LR rubble as well.

Nice thread you've guys got going. :)

thanks TJ, thats a good idea the gravity fed sump from the fudge, i recon i could make that work, cheers, as for the electrics, i can deal with that, im going to move it all to the left hand side of the tank and put a piece of wood in front of it so its hidden, a bit of messing about but easily done, you recon the sand bed is a waste of time? well ok good point i suppose, i doubt i could get more than a 10 gallon fudge under there, 12 at a push, i suppose packed with cheato it will be just as effective

Hookup, the sea swirls don't use water pressure to operate. You can run as little as you want through them. There's an electric 120volt motor that provides the swirl. Mine is gonna only be 400-500 gph and used mainly to mix up the flow from the mj's.

Yeah, I knew that, but swirling 400gph, over two devices, is 200gph and basically I figured pointless. Even one swirl at 400gph is a gentile breeze at best...

Agreed that they are better than not-using anything... You have way more xperience than I, so I'm completely open to suggestion/advise.

well i popped into the lfs this morning and they have never heard of the maxi-jet kit, im going to have to find it on line in the UK somewhere and hope its a decent price, too expensive and i will just buy another 6025

I have 2 sandbeds, one in the display, one in the sump, and like a fool I mounted an Iwaki 100 exterior pump directly to the sump/fuge. SO when the Iwaki ate a cerith and had to be be disassembled and cleaned, so did the fuge: buckets everywhere. And since the sandbed there had been stirred, I had to clean it: I washed it in water-change water, and reinstalled it and crossed my fingers I wouldn't get a cycle.
Nope. Sandbed #1 carried the recently washed sandbed #2, not a hiccup. Sandbed #2 immediately recolonized and layered, and I didn't get any problem at all. There IS something to be said for fuge sandbeds if you've got room for them. I keep about 20 lbs of sand and 20 lbs of rock down there in addition to the algae, and NEXT time I have to do this, I'm doing a cutoff valve between the pump and sump!
