The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

KELSO - Is that Ric Garden pic taken at A Reef Creation in Buffalo, NY? I live about 3 hrs. away from that shop, but find any excuse to head out that way. I love Randy's store, and only wish i lived closer so i could go all the time! Let me know if it was there!

Does anybody have the koralia magnums? I have an opportunity at a #6 magnum for cheap and was wondering if it would be to much flow in my 54 corner. I definitely dont want a sandstorm. Any thoughts?

the only thing i've heard is that they are HUGE... but what is your other circulation? 2200 gph is a lot of flow. Next question would be what kind of corals do you have (plan to have)

How big is huge? I have an nonmodded mj900 and k2 right now. I plan to keep mainly sps, so I know I need the high flow. I can not shell out for the tunze or the vortex ( I would if I could). Do you have any other recommendations?

if it is all sps, (which is my tank now) i can't get enough flow in my tank. I sometimes wish that I had mose flow

I modded 2 mj's. The small prop was a bit much for now so I dremmaled the 2 extra, (white), props and use them. Probably about 2000 gph with the modded prop mods. As the sps grow in, I'll switch back to the standard props which will take it to 2600 gph.

Yep it is! I live in Rochester so i stop in there anytime I make it past batavia! I love that ric garden and I'm working on one of my own. Been a little slow on my tank stuff lately, waiting for spring break so i can spend some good one on one time with it.

Im going to invest in a Vortech MP40W, do you guys think that'll be enough flow in my tank, along with a Hydor Koralia 4 on the other side?? I just bought a new duncan coral w 8 heads on it. I have to post a pic up, the tenticles on the skirt are like 2-3" long, I got a great deal on it!!!

Jesse - I'm soooooo happy to start seeing pics of your tank with actual living organisms in it! Your setup is awesome, and i'm sure we've all been waiting to see it get filled!

KELSO - I love Randy's store! He always has a great selection of everything, and his Aussies are incredible!!! I just hate that i have to drive so far to get there! I also hear ya about being a little slow on the tank. I've been layed off for about 5 weeks and the bulb i have on order is breaking my frag budget. Perfect timing too, right when my LFS gets in some awesome Acro frags and a SWEET Duncan! I have an ORA Red Planet Table Acro and some Purple/Orange Zoas on hold there!

EPSTEIN - do you know the mods to do to a Korallia 3 and 4? I've only got a 54gal with a 1 and 3 in it, but want to add a 4 and then do mods to them if possible. Please let me know!

fantasic 1st pic jesse, he looks a sly cheeky fella looking for food:)

well i was away from the tank for nearly 8 days and was worried sick about it whilst i was gone, but i was pleasently suprised when i walked through the door tonight, apart from a bit of coprraline on the front part of the sand bed and some film of algae on the glass it was fine, ive just had a quick clean around the tank with the scraper and gave the top part of the sand bed a gentle stir and it looks fine, the acro at the front of the top reef wall looks like its grown,ha ha, i doubt it but it does look like it and overall im relieved its all ok, thank god for the tunze top off

I have seen a lot of posts on here about corner tank flow. I thought I would share my pump set up as I am really happy with it. I have a 54 corner. I have a Mag 5 as my sump return going through my chiller. It hits two 90s at the chiller, then points toward the front right corner of the tank. Here I have placed a few sps like birdsnest, digi, and montis. They love it. In the back lower part of my rock work (one on each side) pointing up and towards the center of the tank are Koralia 1s. I would have to move a lot of rock to get to them, but they really keep the interior water of my rockwork moving. Then in the front on each side near the top I have Rio 200s pointing toward each other. I sometimes change their output direction and turn them on and off to create a change in tide effect. For my 54 this setup is phenomenal. I place my corals around this flow based on their requirements. If I had a higher SPS load I would increase my flow by about twice, but with my mixed reef everyone is really happy. I love my corner tank!

sounds good Mang, like the set up.

right now i have a K#3 pointing up twards my overflow from the left front corner twards SPS garden. then a K#1 pointing down my valley, its mounted just above dead center on the right wall to get cross flow past the SPS.i may be getting the controlable koralias #3. if i dont get them im definitley getting at least a #2 for the other front corner for the ever growing SPS garden.

or spring for Vortech :) maybe.

Very Nice Phish and Mang, but remember "as the SPS grows ... so too do your flows...

My flow set up has just been enhanced with the purchase of a Vortech MP40 from a local reefer WOO HOO. This thing is awesome!

I'd been feeling like the rear of my tank was lacking flow. I've basically got 3 rock towers and the flow in front and over them is excellent with a 3000 gph closed loop and a 950 gph return through a 1" sea swirl. With the addition of the Vortech on "reef crest mode" strategically placed on the front left panel, my sand bed is being continuously agitated and I feel the health of the tank will benefit over time.

Here is the diagram I made for the Ecotech Vendor Forum showing where I had proposed to place the Vortech...and ultimately did place it.

Now, my Sea Swirl oscillates between the Vortech flow on the left which is about 10 inches off the sand bed and the closed loop flow from the right which is about 18" off the sand bed. When the streams hit it causes excellent turbulence which is easily visible among the soft corals, the millipora polyps (which I love), and the surface agitation. I've also got a Tunze 6045 which has now been redirected toward the smaller tower underneath the Sea Swirl.

If anyone is considering a Vortech, I'd highly recommended it (though I've only had it two weeks). The Sea Swirl has been worth it's weight in gold as well, though mine have proven to be somewhat unreliable, requiring me to buy a spare so I can send one back to be repaired (twice now)
