The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Great thread I have had some problems fitting things under the stand but so far it is working. I will post some updated pic's soon

hi-ghost, thanks for popping on and im looking forward to see some pics, never heard of a 85 gallon corner before and im interested in your sump as well

All im saying is we do not have to overlight our tank. One thing that I have found to be good about the corner tank is the large surface area, that helps keep the tank cooler, I mean I do have 2 fans blowing cool air in & 2 blowing warmer air out, but Im usually between 77-79 degrees. Even w about 350w of lighting!!

Agreed Bernie21, the tank has a lot of pros that go along with the negatives. I love the foot-print which allowed me to get a large amount of open-sand space in the front of the tank, something I really wanted.

I wanted to keep all the glass perfectly clean, but the corner position makes getting at the back of the tank very difficult so I went with the foam-rock-walls, again just to make something different. It also acts as two giant slabs of live-rock (well over time as it gets seeded...) and gives me some intersting spots to mount some corals.

Other than the lighting and sump area, the tank is one of the nicest. It's hard to get 90 into a living room with-out the tank looking like it is dominiating your room, and this corner setup does that very well.

Of course, because I went to the basement for my sump I do not have the noise or issues with working under the small and awkward cabinet. I was considering an L shaped sump for that area, which some of you have done. It seemed like the Best possible solution.

@ghost48, looking forward to those photos... Photos make a thread go from frog to prince without the slimy kiss...

Hey guys. I guess I'm in. I've been working on mine for just over a year. The tank just got in the room, the rock rack just put in the tank. Start drilling rock today!!!

Hi Michael!!!!

It looks like your headed in the right direction!! That stand is really nice!! I wish I had that kind of access inside my stand, lol, is that you in avitar w Gweneth Palthrow??

Hey HookUp, in your analogy, wouldnt the pics be the slimmy kiss??? Lol!!

First that's Madonna with Gweneth!!!

Part of the reason it's takin me so long was building the stand and all the other planning for such a strange shaped tank. Everything I could think of has already been set up in my mind for quite awhile. Stand had to be high enough for a 24 inch skimmer, (ASM-g3), sump had to fit under tank, (wife go tired of having the old set-up in the closet behind the tank).

And the lighting, wait till you see this!!!!!!

great tank jesse, and great tank room as well, when its running it will make the room even more impressive, when are you planning on getting it going and filling it with water, i assume as the rocks gone in it will be soon, any questions or opinions just re-post, i and all us corner guys will chip in and help, nice to see you here jesse, thanks for posting:)

Here are some pics of my 57gal pentagon corner tank & DIY hood. I had to make the hood myself because the tank is unconventional size, I couldn't buy a hood online anywhere.
I love it though the hood turned out too be a lot cheeper then I could have bought it for.

Cheers!

I hope to have the scaping done by the weekend, then the water and sand. I got rid of alot of my old sps and fish, the rest is in a rubermaid tub in my shop. The basic building rock has been cooked and is dried and ready to be drilled and set-up. Most of the rock is 20+ years old so I figured it may be a good idea to give everything a real good cleaning before putting it in. Same rock has been in at least 4 different tanks!!!!

i love your tank and even though its a pentagon it stills qualifys for this thread and welcome to the club, its a corner and this is what this threads all about, your shrimps are just glorious, i love them they are beautys, and any chance of a lighting shot, i say this because the types of lighting we use are under great debate here, a corners a right nightmare to light properly, i suppose i should stick some pics of mine on as well, thanks for the pictures

good luck for the weekend then jesse, it could be busy, i find once you start doing something with the tank i just cant stop till its done, ive spent many a time up till the early hours of the morning with it, are you going to drill it yourself?if so good luck:)

Yeah I know its a pentagon but still a corner so I though I'd put what I can up here!

For lights after I made the hood I bought a 36" T5 current retro-kit and a used 250W metal halide & ballast.

Total cost for hood & lights...
Wood & screws-$19
Metal Halide (used)- $100
T5 retro-kit- $110

Kelso1980, without PICs of you're re-scaping I feel like we are on a date and you said you just want to be friends... I need so much more... PIC's pls!

Just because you want to be more than friends, doesnt mean it happens! But I guess I'm easy so here are some before and after pictures for ya!

Sorry about the poor picture-taking skills. I dont know who is worse, me or the camera.

Before:

I felt like the rockwork was too bulky in the middle. and I wasnt going to have enough room for corals as I slowly add them... so I readjusted:

Kelso1980, the re-scape is much improved to my tastes. Looks nice..

Pulp Fishin... First, wicked cool name, very creative.lol. Second, nice shots of the canopy. I like the use of eggcrate to stop jumpers. I already have had two carpet surfers.. one blue spot and a bluesided fairy wrasse... not going to lie the bluespot cost a lot to see it on the floor...

Cheers! Thanks your only the 2nd person to comment on my handle name but for sure I love Pulp Fiction so this was just natural selection.

The eggcrate has 2 purposes, you nailed it with stoping carpet surfers as #1 reason.
#2 is heat will not get traped right in the hood and cause a temp flux.

I did have jumpers in the tank and would have lost it if they went carpet surfing.

tank looks very nice, again another reefer with a tall reef wall, h--mmm im thinking of raising mine now, as for the blue pics, i like blue, try pressing the white option on your camera when you take some shots, it will lessen the blue, our eyes adjust to the lighs but the camera cant and needs prompting, the 2nd shot is definately better than the 1st, i like your tank a lot

ive temporarily added a 2nd skimmer to my tank to aid oxygen because of the vodka dosing and the c02 formed from the heating in the house, it seems to be working as the ph is stable again heres some shots of the 2 skimmers on the tank as you will see 1 is on the tank and 1 on the sump, the tank skimmer is the temp, anyone have a skimmer on their tank
