The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

ask as many questions as you need to kelso, and thanks for joining this thread, its great because you guys keep it so

kelso, I've been planning this set-up for almost 2 years, it really helps bumping ideas off others that work with these types of tanks. My asm-g3 will be directly fed from the overflow on the tank. I'm doing the recurculating mod now, it has the mesh mod and the gate valve now. The overflow from the skimmer will feed the fuge, then the fuge into the sump. A return pump set at about 180 gph will feed back to the tank.

Mike show me a pic of your lights off the tank next time you take them off please!!!!!

jesse, few Q's: Do you use phos and/or carbon reactor? Next time you get your camera out could you snap some for me? No rush, this wont happen for a few months but it's nice to get an idea. What return pump do you use?
There are a hundred and one upgrades that could/should be done on my tank...baby steps.

ok jesse heres some pics and a link

you can click on my red house for more lighting picks as well

I do plan on adding a phosban reactor. I ordered one but it hasn't arived yet. Don't know about the carbon yet. I want too see how the one fits before I get another. The return is a ca pump but I don't remember the number, but I'll get it when I go to my shop later.

The mesh mod for the pump is easy and I'll show some pics later when I have the skimmer ripped apart. The recurc mod is where I'm at now. I'm trying to find a different way than using the uni-seals that asm used. It's just too flimsy for me. The gate is easy too, just the gate valve is expensive.

ha ha i know what you mean theres some pretty impressive lighting pictures posted by the corner guys on here, and hopefully more to come as well

hookup, the light specs are as follows.

Odyssea fixture 380w total
-Pheonix 14K 250w HQI
-Icecap MH ballast
-2 65w stock PC atinics

gonna swap out stock the atinics for Corallife's one of these days.

Misled- love the scwd design. might have to try that. BRILLIANT!!

Phish Guy- Thanks, I'm impressed at that fixture... way, way more simple than my DIY and nice output overall.

Misled - thanks for the breakdown... first time i've ever seen one of those, and the way you built it looks interesting.

One more question, does the plex-glass cover your tank? It looks like it does, in which case I have a follow-up question... what are yours, and others, thoughts on the effect of a medium (glass/plex) filtering the lights to the corals?

It was my understanding that bulb glass is designed in combination with the gasses to deliver some pretty specific output and adding any type of filter/pass-thru could potentially degrade the quality of light being delivered to your tank...

Thoughts?

If that's pointed at me, I don't have plex-glass or anything over my tank. If you are refering to the pic with the holes drilled into it, that's the bottom of the rack to hold my rock.

I've had tanks with the rock scaled from bottom to top, and front to back. I have the rack designed to go up the side walls then one pillar to the center. The center will also get a rock from the left side to create a cave. On the right side I left space for the pump to run the scwd. Hopefully the rock will be set-up so I'll be able to show you this weekend.

EDIT: and I don't think it's a good idea to put plex-glass over the tank. Not only gas exchange and light loss, you also create heat problems.

One thing I got to today was the pipes in the overflow box. I figured I'd stick this in in case anyone else thinks the manufactures are stupid for selling a black aquarium with white pipes.

I used Krylon Fussion. It bonds with plastic and when cured is reef safe.

Misled, i re-read your posts explaining the swrd thing and realized that you were not mounting that to the acrylic then to the tank, but that was two separate items... my bad.

Love the Star fish ... LOL

jesse thats a seriously impressive tank and system you have there, you can tell a lot of thought and experience has gone into it, and as mentioned above great starfish, ha ha, looks like a christmas starfish to me, very rare:lol: found in the english channel i believe:D

powerheads? what do you guys think is the best type and quantity for the corner, ive got 2 tunzes and 3 koralias in mine, its a bit of an eyesore, anyother suggestions

I have 2 koralias and 1 seio. Don't worry, they're all ugly but gotta have that flow!!!!!!

im thinking of replacing 2 of the koralias for another tunze actually, there are 2 K2s at the back, i recon 1 6025 would do the trick, and i could hide it behind the rocks

What is this, I dont check in for a few days and you guys add like 3 pages to this thread, come on!!! I have a lot of reading to catch up on!! I have my Mag 18 return, w 1 Koralia 4, Im thinking of adding a 2nd one. Hey Michael, do you have any fish?? I never see fish in your pictures. I love the creativity on some of these tanks.
You can fit an ATO inside the stand Flfireman has a great pics for the setup!!! Im stealing his Idea, it fits and works great!!!
