The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Oh yeah and thanks for the compliments on the fish & on the aquascaping, I love the Idol, he truely is beautiful & as far as the top branch Rock, thats not a bad Idea, I just have to see because it is Prime real estate!!

Yeah, I went a bit over-board on the sump. I drilled holes in the floor and setup a 175 gallon sump in the basement. I know it's overkill but bigger is easier, and I had the room. The under the tank stuff is just so noisy so I wanted it moved to the basement. Ive dialed down the flow so that I have about 200-300gph flowing through the display into the sump, and once the vortex pumps arive I'll have 4000gph in the main tank but they are the variable speed ones to get some random flow and keep everything suspended longer... that should be a few weeks due to holiday season.

I've also just started to use the Ultra-Lith system from Faunamarin.de. Two days in, so I'll have to let you know. Tonight's photo (I will take and post) will be the 2-day photo on the corals (frags), so we'll see in a few weeks what colors up.

My build link was posted earlier, not that exciting of a read, but it has some photos of the current sump room.. which is going to be rebuilt likely in the spring...

Okay so I finally got around to taking some pics of my corner tank. Im almost embarrassed to display them. Please excuse the egg crate box covering my gigas clam. Its an attempt to keep my Regal away from eating the mantle.
Anyhow here it goes,

Sump Room
IMG_0593.jpg
IMG_0594.jpg

The Sump room is more crowded at this point. The crappy skimmer has been replaced with an Octo-Pro 300 and I've added phosban and carbon reactors... to that same first tank with the skimmer in the photo. And added a QT system into the room as well that is always on adding about 20gal to the sump...

The Sump itself holds 175gal. I measured the water level when it was running and used the calculator. There are 2x40g tanks (top) and 2x55g tanks (bottom) and a 25gal tank (not shown) in the sump room...

The lights are only partly finished... so as of right now (the photo) there is the main light from the 400 watt MH (20,000K) mounted in a luminbright reflector at about 16" above the water. This was a HUGE upgrade from my previous reflector.. I used the larger size luminbright reflector as well, even though you'd think the smaller one would work on our tanks better...
There are also 4 T5HO bubls in the tank. two are True actinic and two are daylight ish? They bring out the red/pink.. cannot remember the exact correct name.

I am adding 2 more T5 bulbs once I get the canopy finished.. they will be across the front of the "bow" facing downwards...

I think what you are seeing in the over-head shot is the luminbright reflecting the MH.

FIFIREMAN - WOW... can I get a list of your fish? You've got some really nice ones. How's the antharis (sp) doing? I see you have a few... LOOKS very beautiful... Must be a joy to have...

hey corner people, should i get a 250 watt halide of 150 watt halide for my 60 gallon corner, im also putting in 2 t5s for the more bluer look
so 150watt
or 250 watt?

Thank you,
My wife loves the fishies so I have to keep her happy. If I list my stock list Im going to have the fish police come and get me. But anyhow, here it is. All fish are very fat and happy and I have no aggression issues. I believe the amount of rock in the tank (about 125lbs) helps since there are so many hiding places for the fish.
Purple Tang
Blue hippo tang
swiss guard baselet
mandarin goby
3 bartletts anthias
regal angelfish
potters angelfish
flame angelfish
yellow clown goby
neon goby
flame fairy wrasse (male)
pylei fairy wrasse
clown/solar fairy (soon to be removed)
1 female fairy wrasse (unknown species)
Male african leopard wrasse (my pride and joy)
female african leopard wrasse
female leopard wrasse (melagris)
and finally a pair of mated Gold Stripe Maroons that regularly lay eggs. One day I will try and see if I can grow out the eggs. Right now they are caviar

The anthias are doing great. Had them for about 8 months now. I was lucky to get a trio with one male and two females.

I'm not going to give you what for... it's truly a big list, but they look healthy from the snaps. I'm also planning a bigger than typical list, including some anthias, flameangle and a copperbanded...

How old is your system?? Mines about 3 months. Rock is from mature tanks (2-3 yrs older)... been an exciting ride so far.

Here are some pics of my sump setup.
I basically have the largest size sump you can fit inside the stand. It extends the length of one of the sides. I then have a small refugium that dumps back into the sump.
To the left of the stand I have a custom made Kalkwasser reactor and ATO. Its fed thru a RO/DI filter that is on the other side of the wall underneath the kitchen sink.

The skimmer is a modded ASM G2 with gate valve and upgrade to the Sedra 5000 pump.
The only thing not pictured is the RO resevoir container that is behind the left side of the tank. It is a smalle 1 gallon resvoir that is flat. I believe I used a flat cooler water container that I purchased at home depot.

The other thing I couldnt fit in the tank and sits beside it is the denitrator. I caught hell from my wife for not having it hidden, but shes the one that likes all the fishies.

I had a copperband when I originally set up the tank. I had him feeding out of my hand. He was the first fish I added to the aquarium. Did fantastic for 6 months that is until my wife decided she had to have a powder blue tang. The bastard beat up the CBB to the point that when I finally removed the PBT the CBB died two days later. I traded the PBT for the blue tang. Friends said I was crazy since that was a healthy PBT. But I hated the damn thing, never seen such an aggressive fish!

My system is about 14 months old. But I purchased it from a fellow reefer that had it for about 2 years. Of course I upgraded a few things (canopy, lights, removed wet/dry, new sump, refugium, kalkwasser reactor, denitrator). The live rock, sand and 2 fish (which are no longer in the display) all came with the aquarium.

PBT can be aggressive for sure... from what I know/hear, they are reef-farmers, and stick to a specific area on the reef that they 'farm' for their own food... this creates a territorial behavior as they constantly have to fend-off attacks of other fish coming to steal their crops...

They are sexy fish... sorry to hear you had to get rid of yours.

You under-sump area looks, well like a sump area.. (LOL). Good sized skimmer for sure...

Do you run ozone? does anyone on this thread run ozone? I've been looking at them...

No, I have done no research on them....dont even understand what they are for, or how they benefit the aquarium. Guess I need to do a little more research......

By the way how did you do your rock walls? Are those foam? Love the way they look. If I ever move my tank I will be adding those for sure.

Thanks! I'm proud of the rock walls myself... I wrote up a photographic how-to guide for a LFS in my area. check out www.ottawainverts.com. It's the cover story right now you can see it on the main page.

I researched the materials from RC threads. Everything went well. Really easy to do... Hardest part was finding the z-poxy..lol.

guys, great shots, just love the tanks, i like the height of your rock wall flfireman 1, the way it hits the surface almost, makes me wonder about changing my wall a bit, just great, and hook your tank is looking great, funny how many landscapes we can fit in them, im definately thinking of altering mine a little now, after seeing both these tanks and epsteins i think my reef wall is a little low, keep up the good work, and can i see some close up pics of your lighting systems

I've had a 44g diamond shaped corner for about 2 years, no fancy bow front for me! Wish I had one. Aquascaping and equipment is a nightmare, I just move all of the rocks around last night when I saw Bernie's. I've moved my sump to the side of the stand and am building a removable cabinet with a flip top to go over it. Lights are a 24" 150W MH with 2 65w PC. That will go in the custom canopy I am planning.

I'm in cleanup mode at the moment due to neglect from a medical emergency, but we're almost back in spec and the algae is going away. I'll post pics later.

I had one 250 and found tooo many shadows.......I have tried every lighting from nova extreme pro to mh ...and find my current set up the most favorable...I have dual 250's and dual t 5 actinics
