The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

i have been doing 20-25% changes for the past month, but im going to try doing a 40% water change every 4 days for two weeks to see how that goes.

I just signed up to zeovits forum to read up some more about it.

O man i never thought about everyone on this thread having the same avatar! It's kind of funny though, but i do like Bernie's idea of adding something unique to your own so it looks a little different. And for the latest conversation on here (RufRidn & Hookup) the guy at my LFS wrote a thing in front of his tanks that read
"The Solution
To Polution
Is Dilution"
I thought this was a clever little thing that stuck in my head!

ya i agree with doing huge water changes to correct the problem with the nitrates with, but i tried doing that for a while but it just didn't seem to make much of an impact (plus it is time consuming, which is hard to find time for me to do a WC that often). The other reason I don't like doing that big of WC is that it changes to much of the water out which isn't always a good thing on the sps'. I've heard good things about the zeovit system, but it seems like you have to add alot of things. I've tried to read up on it but it seems like if I had to ask someone to look after my tank it would be to much for them.

ps. i'd like to be proven wrong on that. I am thinking of trying zeo on my next tank.

Cannot comment on the husbandry of zeo.. maybe some other corner geek can... i can comment on ultralith, which is a competitor...

Once established on a 1000l (260gal) system;
daily - 2 things need dosing at 1ml each
weekly - 4 things need dosing at 10ml each
every 6 weeks - need to change some rocks/media and add one more thing daily for about 3 weeks (6drops/day)

It sounds like alot of work, but it really isn't... I had my mom come do the tank - sitting for a week.. no issues.. .here's the 2 liquids, 1ml each day of each... and she was good to go... and food for the fishes...

If you miss a day or two, or three. no big.. just get back on it...

I built a calculator/ramp-up tool for a LFS that has been proven to work on about 1/2 dozen systems thus far... again, for ultralith (www.faunamarin.de)... it makes things simple... I'm going to add the other dosing elements to the same calculator as an entire "ultra-lith dosing system/schedule" planner...

Oh, that also assumes that you have a reactor, as the zeolith rocks need to be "tossled" each day, perferably several times a day, to keep active... doing it once a day by hand is no big deal, but if you have the $$, building a reactor, or buying one is preferable... Once I figure out how to DIY one, i'll post in that section and link in this forum.

Sounds like a good idea. I would like to do a DIY reactor of some kind as well, but if your gonna be the first person to do it, i'll just go off what you do!

Awesome bigbenji! I'm sure i speak for everyone when i say we're excited to get another tank on this thread! Lookin forward to some pics!

Reefscampe15 does not speak for me.... I am my own man... (joking)

Great to have you on board, or in our corner.. whatever...

And definitely... pics are mandatory for this thread... :)

I added a bunch of corals from a frag tang a friend was taking down. Had to make the racks a bit bigger. The acros lost most of their color from a power outage. I'll see if I can get them to color back up!!!

Hookup - haha! thanks pretty funny!

Jesse - YAY!!!! Corals finally going into the tank! I've seen pics of your tank from the day joined RC, and am very excited to see how it will turn out! Hope you have good luck getting the color back into those Acros.

As a little side note, sometime in April i'm going to Buffalo for the weekend and get to go to my favorite all time store - A Reef Creation!!!! (www.areefcreation.com) There is an Acan frag pack i'm going to pick up: 6 frags that are about 2-3" each for $150. I have one Acan Echinatta, and really only want a couple more Acans in my tank, but i don't think i can get them as cheap if i don't get the frag pack. So.....if anyone is interested that lives near Elmira, NY (Upstate NY) and you want me to try to get a certain color frag for you, please let me know, and we could meet up to exchange them! I'm pretty sure there's not all that many people on here that live very close, but let me know! I guess if i have to i'll keep all the frags for myself, and maybe i could ship them or trade them into my LFS or something.

Hey guys I have a few pics of some of my new additions. FTS.

a pic, more to come on the weekend

a pic, more to come on the weekend

I've only got time to post one pic. It took a lot longer to set up than I had planned. I was looking to make walls and a center island with my live rock, but I didn't have as much as I originally thought I did. Anyway, I managed to make a lost of nice caves, and the walls are actually pretty steep but stable. There are tons of shelves for corals, if I go that route.

aqua C remora w/ mj1200
Aquaclear 50 filter with just floss in it for now. I'm looking to mod a HOB filter into a refugium. The HOB apparatus needs to be less than 12" wide to fit under my canopy. Any ideas?

Obviously I need to read through the tutorial to post pics again.

Looking good Benji. Aquascaping really does make the time fly, doesn't it? Did you just stack the rock that steep, or did you adhere it together somehow?

Nice avatar btw.

Well I did it last night... It was great... Oh, and I installed the vortech pumps too! (hahah, bad joke i know).

So the vortech MP40's are in the tank. Photos inc, got to get them off the camera... and a video too!

One on each wall approximately the same place from each other, but that was just where they looked good/ended up cause of my aquascaping. I went with MP40's because I wanted to run them at a less than 100% speed due to reported noise issues. It's true, they are noisy at full-speed... with TV on, it's noticable.. i'm still tuning them, will keep ya'all posted if I get it better... anyhow at 40% speed its only noticable when we are sitting in the room, nothing on, and reading a book/newspaper... and it's not bad at all.

So the good news, I can generate about 6400gph of flow in the 90gal tank... hahaha... yes, that's a frigg'n hurricane if/when I want one...

I did successfully generate a wave in the tank. The wave was between 2 and 3 inches from crest to trough! So waves in a corner tank are very possible... every coral that "moves" in my tank was swaying back and fourth, so the wave carried to the entire tank, not just the surface water. My stand is not re-enforced for wave motion, so after my experiment I went to lagoon mode. (random lazy flow)... I know for sure I could have made a bigger wave... I only had the pumps at 60% or there abouts but was getting worried about spilling water out of the tank. I have a vid of this, I'll be posting on Youtube and linking into this forum...

This kind of system is expensive, no doubt, but Echotech makes the vortech pumps at the lowest cost, and they are the best out there (IMO). of course, everone plugs the product they bough... haha...

For those thinking of this pump system and worried about our corner tank design and wave/flow coverage, I can attest that there are NO issues if you use two pumps, one on each side... With a "single" MP40, I was not able to get sufficient flow into the back of my rock work... It was there, but I was not happy with it... with two of them, it's no issues at all. One MP40 and a Korillia would be fine, for budget reasons and give all the benefits of random, pulsing, flow... But why have one when you can get 2?
