The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Almost done. I'll finish tomorrow. No early pics though, looks like crap cause there's alot of extra stuff in it.

your sump is very impressive bernie, i love the way you have it under there, lots of room actually, i wish i had removed my centre brace now, my sumps tiny, it does the job but its so small, you could actually stand the skimmer outside the sump and have more room as well if you needed to, great job bernie

corner tank

corner tank

Hi all, I have a corner tank that has been set up for five yrs straight with no loses, my bubble tip divided, my percula clowns had babies, and my blue hippo and yellow tang are five inches long - were the size of a quarter. I have more fish and coral stories but don't want to waste your time. I will post a picture of my tank soon as i figure out how to do it - let me know how. First I installed a triangle plenum with medium to large grade aragonite. For the rock you need two very large pieces of rock with character about 15 inches long, then start near the front and lean them back to the back wall - move them close to each other to leave caves, nooks and crannies. the coral you buy will come with rock so you really don't need to add any fist size rock - wait for your livestock. My lighting comes from a suare canopy with one MH and two power compacts with fan (love that canopy) bought it off ebay for $150. I used an adjustable plant hanger from Lowes or Home Depot to hang it. I use a hang on the side Marineland 250 with carbon every once in awhile to filter the water. I use a sea swurel from the return for circulation. I have a sump with a hang on skimmer box. I use a Euroreef skimmer that sits inside the sump. Now for the tips...Go to the hardware store and buy a sheet of paneling the same color of your tank trim usually pecan color then have them cut a piece the length of the sheet now cut it about 3ft long and velcro it to the top trim (onepeice has lasted me 5 yrs. Looks great and hides everything plus easyto take off and stick back on, I use DOWFLAKE for CA and ARM & HAMMER for Alk. Dowflake can be purchased at pool supply stores. I buy my MH bulbs from cbconcepts off ebay for $10 each - great bulbs CR65 rating and come in 10k, 20k, 14k etc. Hope this helps - but do not pile rocks ups the two very big pices works the best but it has to be Narly with shape and dimension.

hi-bluesking, pleased you posted, id love to see some pics, best way i think is to open a photobucket account, and just paste the photos onto the thread from it, but there is another way, when you post you will see a browse button under the post box, you must press the post reply box to see it, the quick reply hasnt got 1, and when the browse button is pressed it should open a link to your docs and pics, just click on the photo press open and it will appear in the browse box ready for uploading, however i still prefer photo bucket

Finally got some pics of my Bernie inspired aquascape re-do and some new frags that came in yesterday. I am battling a GHA issue so please excuse the mess... I so enjoy pulling it out one pinch at a time all week.

My design isn't the most impressive of what has been posted but it's much better than the "pile o' rock" style I've had. The black background kind of hides the arches and cave but there is lots of room around the back for flow and the middle is pretty hollow. 44g pentagon is a tough one.

The Favia is a little bleached from where it was hidden under a ledge before I re-scaped.

I also just swapped the lights from:

1-150w coralife 10k MH
1 - 65w Actinic PC
1 - 65w 10k PC

all 1-2yr old (oops)

to:

1-150w 14k Phoenix MH
1- 450 nm 65w PC
1- 10k coralife 65w PC

29g sump w/ Octopus 110 DNW skimmer is to the left awaiting construction of the cabinet to hide it. All of the furniture will be black and silver with a matching hood eventually

unusual shape but very nice in anycase, i wont get into the green hair algae, just to say there are links i can send you which will help, anyhow can you post a pic of your lights, lighting is one of the most awkward things about corners, we like to see them if possible, ideas for others and all that, thanks for posting your pics

my lighting is less than ideal haha. It is just a 24 inch unit on top of the tank, not pretty at all but works until my canopy is done.

Thanks for not picking on my GHA, my wife was in an accident and layed up on crutches for 3 months so I've been house husband for a while and the first 2 months involved basically ignoring the aquariums. Getting them all back into shape as we speak.

I'll get my awesome lighting pic up in a little bit.

hope your wife is ok now:) and keep us up to date then with the tank as it recovers, fwiw i think it looks pretty good anyhow, the GHA isnt that bad

She's doing pretty good, got cleared to walk on Wednesday!

I'll post some updates as the algae improves and the new scape matures, plus I need to place the new frags in their final positions after the de-stress a little.

Thanks for the kind words

Ok so I still have the two rods in the back on the top to clip and the one that shows in the front will be gone when I epoxy the rock sitting by it. Only four pieces of rock touch the bottom.

Wow dude! That looks awesome! :smokin:

thats a good idea jesse, there will be plenty of flow under the rock and i have to say for 20 year old rock it looks in good condition, obviously you have cleaned it up but looks clean, are you sticking fine aragonite in?or medium grade

It will be an eclectic mix. It gives my cucumber a balanced diet!!!! I have about 50lbs from the Bahamas, and about 60lbs Carib Sea fine aragonite. There's also about 50lbs of mix Carib Sea fine with about 20lbs live from a LFS in the tub to seed it with. We'll see what happens.

I wanted to do a mix of sand aswell but in the end I just went 80lbs of fine aragonite sand. I would like to add more, but I wouldnt know how to do that w the tank already up, I wouldnt want to risk anything either. I like the rock work so far.
Dbrand11, Im glad my you liked my rockscaping. Its been a month & so far Im still happy w them so chances are I will remain that way, lol!! I like your new set up much better too. Hookup & Michael, thanks for the compliments, It was a pain building it in there, but its seems to be pretty good so far! I do need to work on my ATO next & kalkwasser mixer too.

Bernie21, I recently added about 20lbs of new sand to my tank, no issues thus far (been 3weeks). as it was 'new' i washed it, and put a cup at a time into the tank, lowered to the bottom and emptied it to avoid a massive sand-storm in the tank.

I then stirred it with the existing stand so I wouldn't create any anaerobic decay of potential live-sand being buried under new, non-live sand.

At 3 weeks I had a small cyano/diatom flare (like 2sqr inch) that was vacuumed out after the first week and did not ever return.
