The Reef Central Corner Club Thread

Well I got the canopy construction done, not the stain. That will be attacked this week. Thought I'd post some photos. However, the process was not easy for me. I built out the frame by tracing the curve on some wood and cutting it out using a jig-saw. This allowed me to get a base for the canopy and an upper deck area. Think of 2" wide board shaped to match and sit on the perimeter of the tank. Then using some basic 2x1 boards I built the structure to a 25" height, cause that was the height i needed for the lumen bright, and junk. Some cross braces on the straight-sides really increased the strength. Finally, using a hunk of 2x4 I traced the curves and used a scroll-saw to cut out the door-braces where I used 1 screw per board, (one on top and bottom in the middle of the vertical face board to make the doors. The first and last 3 boards on my canopy are perm attached to the frame, the rest are doors.

(ok, that description sucks, if you want more pm me, or post here and I can do a wright up with some photo instructions.)

Hope that helps and inspires. Honestly, my wood working skills suck. I had to make both doors twice. At first I went to HomeDepot and bought a decent jig-saw hoping to cut the cabnet door braces out with it... yeah well 3 failed attempts (they will not cut perfectly vertical over a 2" thick piece of wood) I remember that someone ages ago gave my wave a scroll-saw in a box in a past life.. anyhow I darted to the garage to see if it could cut 2x4's on their side.. and it could.. now I spent about 5 hours cutting out the curve shapes, badly at first, until I learned the tool better... The final door, was the big-door version 2.0 and it took about 20min of cut time for both braces, and almost no sanding.. version 1.0 of those doors took well into 1.5hrs and way-too-much sanding to remember... hahaha...

All I'm saying is anyone with the ability to post on this forum can make these doors and i'm sure most of you can do a heck of a lot better....

I'll post once it is stained to finish the project... oh, and I have to mount the 5th and 6th (last two) T5's into the big-door. That I have figured out, just have to get off my butt and get it done.

Oh, yeah. I should explain the black lines. That is black silicone to filling any gaps to stop light from leaking forward. Ill be adding weather-door-stripping to the hinged areas and where the two doors meet to accomplish the same purpose. I just hate it when light spills out of the canopy.

Wow hookup, that's a nice canopy setup! woodworking skills look pretty good to me. I have to work on my setup...my lights are currently being held up by two paint cans that are sitting on top of my glass. :rolleye1:
But i have a plan

Love the paint-can method! For the longest time I had beach-towels hanging up to block the lights. Yeah, the wife did not like that very much... let's say I was motivated to improve the setup...

Put in some sand, had alot more Bamaha sand than I thought.

Also epoxied the bracket for the seio on the upper part of the overflow, just above the rocks.

Started the lighting. It's not gonna be a canopy because I like the open look. Also not gonna be a pendant. Really don't know what to call it. I figured with the two walls in the corner, I'd make use of them. This is for the front.

that looks quite a project hookup the hood, it looks like a lot of thought went into it, good idea about the black sealant, well done, it will be nice when its stained/painted

im starting to get itchy feet now jesse, i cant wait for water to go into the tank, im pretty impatient at this point when it comes to getting water in, everything looks really nice, just the cycle now, i suppose youve done it a few times over the years, theres plenty of swimming space for a nice tang in there as well

Hey Hookup,

Yes, that definitely inspires me! ;) I love the way you have your lighting setup! I also like how you paid attention to the small details like wanting to cut out light pollution by filling in the gaps.

My wife is getting on me about getting my canopy done. I'm working on a canopy of my own right now, and light bleeding out is a huge concern. You're tank is awesome, man! Thanks for the picture tips. Although I'm going a different route on how my canopy will open up, the lighting will be very similar to yours.

Here, here!

My curiosity is peaked... especially when it comes to how he's going to light that beauty up!

hey hookup, i have to say the canopy rocks, 1 question, it might be silly, but why is one door larger than the other?i expected them to meet in the middle, i suppose theres a good reason and your going to make me look stupid now but please put me outta my misery, cheers

This is a good question. I will be mounting two more T5 lights inside the canopy. They will be affixed to the large door and roughly centered in the "bow". Therefore I wanted a larger solid door to afix the lights to.

I really want a mix of T5 lights in the tank to bring out lots and lots of coral color, so with this final setup I'll have 6 of the 24" bulbs to work with.

I've also picked up a controller and 4xdosing pump that I will be connecting sometime. Right now I'm doing very frequent water changes to fight some cyano so my trace-elements and parameters are spot-on and there is no need for a dosing system.

Finally, I'm moving my tank this weekend. Really far. 1/2 inch from one wall and 3/4 inch from the other... yes, I need the tank to be 2.75" from both walls evenly so I can install the vortech pumps from EchoTech Marine. (http://www.ecotechmarine.com/) If you have not seen these pumps, and are looking to reduce the impact/look of your circ pumps these are the solution. I'll warn ya, they are cheaper than the tunze solution but still not cheap, because they are low-voltage and programmable/variable speed. Something else I want in the tank.

I like those pumps, I eventiually want some of those, but for now Koralias will do, I just set up a tank & my funds are depleted... I added a couple of things, Ill see if I can take some pics of them...

I have a 140 gallon corner tank that is 3 ft deep (which is a pain to clean). Current was a big issue for a while. Had to add two koralia 3's on the over flow box pointed towards the outer wall. This made for a huge improvement in the flow throughout the tank.

mike how are you, i dont have a corner tank but i love them . i wanted to know what kind of light you have on your tank it looks different.

Welcome btb72!!! I would like to see some pics of your 140, that sounds nice, I love the corner bow look of my corner, but I just wish I had 6" more on the sides & 3-4" taller, just for the work space under and a lil bigger tank.
