Wow absolutely amazing...Incredible PICS... Brian how do you handle your water changes? What do you do for your husbandry, feeding, and dosing additives?

I do monthly water changes of 100gal at a time I have the tank hard plumbed with a valve to drain the sump outside with the use of the chiller pump. Sometimes I do two water changes a month it all depends. I'm building a water changer system which will be 40gals and will be doing water changes more frequently.

Feeding is done daily with P.E. mysis, baby mysis, brine, soaked in vitamins and blood worms. basically a mixture of all kinds of frozen foods.

I don't dose anything but buffer if needed as my calcium reactor takes care of calcium and alk. I have dolimite cystals in the reactor also which help keep mag up and I dose that if needed.

Did you have any difficulty with your OM/Barracuda CL?

I also have a Barracuda running OM 4way CL. I have 4 eductors which cause too much back pressure for the OM (magnetic version) to switch. I'm currently running #2 drum and will try #3 next to see if it balances the pressures on the sides of the drum and allow it to turn.

Wooooo I never thought about that. I was planning on using educators on my dart with a OM4?????????????????

I'm running the OM 4 way with OM Omni Flex Nozzles so there is no backpressure and I haven't had any problems and more than enough flow. I'm running the #3 drum.
 
I have a hard time "buying" the whole eductor thing. My suspicion is that you "feel" more flow but that you don't get more flow. I don't see any way that a nozzle can make a pump put out more flow. It can ONLY create back-pressure IMO. I wouldn't use them.

An eductor will indeed get you more flow; it works using the venturi effect; because of this the tight stream of water generated in the eductor pulls in surrounding water from the tank. Same kinda idea as a beckett injector pulling in air, except you're pulling in water.

You're not creating flow for free though. Eductors require a pressure rated pump to generate this extra flow. It takes a lot of power to push the water under pressure through the eductor nozzles compared to a simple open pipe. I'd be willing to bet that if you took the power to run a pressure pump and eductors and used it to power a flow rated pump, you'd be moving more water with the flow pump.

Thanks for that explanation, that does make some sense, although I would tend to agree that a flow pump would at least be more electrically efficient.
 
Just my .02 cents on eductors. They work in principle the same as I have used for suction dredges. The smallest Dredge I used had a 12 h.p. engine with a water hose of 2" This was connected to a 360 degree venturi system around a 6" hose. Without gravel going throught the system, the volume of water ejected from the 6" pipe was about six times the water from the 2" pump only.

Thanks, i had one that i got for free but could not id, i am going to research them now as i do not know much about them, nice corals though are they SPS?
 
not trying to hijack your thread but in regards to using eductors I can tell you they really do work. when I set up my tank I tried all different configurations including lockline, eductors, pvc y's, etc. , using bubbles to judge the flow. I could not believe the difference eductors made, it was dramatic. they create so much turbulence and chaotic flow it's incredible. they do require a pressure pump to run them but the net effect is impressive, certainly much less expensive than Tunze's and little or no maintenance, jmo
