I just ordered 2 of each of these, I'll let you guys know how they work when I get them in, and have time to work on it.

Here is what I ordered from page 2. It took them a while to get here got them last night. I love that 2.5rpm but I think I'll probably end up making all 4 into maxi-steins. I'll just sell off or give away the 2 I don't like, or maybe I'll end up with 4 of them. But on first test I think the 2.5 is a better speed than the 3/4rpm and I know the torque is going to hold up. Plus its easier to work with the plastic x on the 2.5rpm than the long steel shaft on the 3/4rpm.

But honestly I didn't want to pay shipping twice if I didn't like one of the motors and they are cheap enough I just got both. I wish now I felt confident enough to make it out of a dc motor with gearing to reduce it, then you could put it on a potentmeter, man that would rock. Maybe I'll get the guts to try it after I get these 4 are done, but I doubt it not if I end up liking these.

I got that exact same housing at lowes today at lunch, it was like $8.50 though.. dang! I may end up making some housings after I get one working and can take measurements of everything together.

How are you guys mounting them to the tank? Thats about the only thing left I'm really unsure about.

Did ya check in the electrical department? I think, a 6 x 6 inch box used for outdoor wiring.

Yep the one I used was 4x4x2, it looks small but everything will fit.

Should be - click on the "more details" above the picture... Says 240v 1rpm, could be a different one, but I doubt it.

has anyone checked freight from canada to US?
I didn't check yet, but am interested.
Just a thought here... if freight is prohibitive in onesies and twosies, get together a group order and re-ship...?
long day at work, I may just be rambling

I made a good deal of progress last night, my box is 4x4x2 and I think a little bigger would have been nice. I think I'm going to need a smaller cam than I wanted because of the smaller box. It also required some "prep" on the bottom to make it flat as it had a big blob in the middle that made the motor set funny. I'll get some pictures of my progress this weekend.

Has anyone actually mounted one? I've got a few ideas floating in my head but nothing concreat yet. I was thinking of bending a piece of acrylic to act like a clip on the bottom of it, and then extend an L on the top to hook over the side. I don't know for sure but I'm worried about mounting a little.

I think every one will have slightly different mounting needs. On my IA built tank there is a ~2" lip that runs around the inside of it, so I just glued a flat peice acrylic to the side of the box and screwed it to the side of my canopy.

I have decided that I'm just gonna build my own box. That way I can plan out the exact dimension and shape I want without the hassle of trying to make something work.

Got a sheet of PVC lying around I'm gonna try this on this weekend.

You know, instead of the dual rotating circles (piston like a steam engine), there are alternative ways to make this thing work. A swingarm and wheel would work...

I have been making one that will not only move the powerhead back and forth, but up and down as well in a circle by mounting the timing motor vertically and using a swingarm that is balanced on a ball-pivot like a teeter-toter.

Ill make diagrams and post later...but there are many ways to do this than just whats been shown so far...many ways that take up less space as well.

Have any of you guys thought of using a wiper motor from the junk yard? Take that, a rhiostat, 12v and a wiper arm that has been epoxy painted and be done with it.

That wiper motor is EXPENSIVE as compared to these motors we're using. IF you're lucky you might find one at the junk yard for $10

Also the wiper motor is much larger and cumbersome as well.

I started out looking at wiper motor at first but this looks to be a better alternative IMO.

Check ebay $4 or $5 They are DC so speed controll is a simple poteniometer away. They back/forth of the motor keeps you from having to do all the rigging inside the box. So it's faster to make one this way. I don't have to cut nothing but a whole for the wiper arm and the wires to go in. What's your time worth? If I can do it for $20 more, but save an hour, it was worth it.

True. Still I like to keep this as compact and small as possible and I won't be able to do that with the wiper motor.

Any pics of yours?
