The Tank that REEF CENTRAL Built - 450 gal display, 800 gal volume

We moved two of our favorite corals into the main display, a rainbow open brain and a rainbow wellsophyllia. Both have been thriving and always tentacles out eating until we moved them 6 days ago, since then both have been completely contracted. Everything else looks great, water is perfect.

Only change is the lighting. Went from 150w MH about 16 inches below water line, to under 175W about 26 inches below water. Do you think I need more light?

Can the water be too clean?
 
The water parameters in your quarantine tank should be as close as possible to the display. What is it that is different? If it is the light levels that are different it may take weeks for the coral to adjust.

Just started following this thread and am very interested. I too, am planning a 96x36x36 custom tank. I am currently in the designing phase of this. I have not ordered my tank but am considering external overflows as well, with a custom sump. I currently have a 72x30x30 tank that sits on a stand that is 43" high. I will have to retrofit my stand to work with the larger tank but my stand and canopy is large enough to accommodate. I also will need a design on sump and opinions for an external skimmer. Both of which have not been purchased. I am hoping your decisions and all your help from RC will also help me. Thank you for posting, as I am learning with you.

Are you really,really sure that you want a 36"h tank? PITA to work on...are you happy with your 30" tall?
 
It is a pain to work on. I agree. I had a 36" high acrylic and it was a horrible experience. Trying to clean it at that height and not scratching it. That's why I went to 30". It is much easier to work on, however part of that is because it is glass and not acrylic. I will subsequently never get another acrylic tank. My main reason for going with a 36" is that my stand that I had made for the 72x30x30 has a huge canopy, and my tank is dwarfed by the stand. It is also in a room with extremely tall ceilings and aesthetically it doesn't look right. One other reason, I have a Vlamingi tang that is about 10" long and when he jumps or flips, water comes pouring out of my tank. I do agree with you, 36" does make maintenance more difficult.

Thanks for posting and following along. It will be great to have another perspective to give feedback on the build and bounce ideas off of.
36" is tall and we know getting into the corners of the tank is going to be a challenge but asthetically the overall hight of the tank, stand, and canopy will be perfect for the room. The space has 12' ceilings, and is the main living area of the house with a very open kitchen, dining, living area. The system will match the height of the kitchen cabinets, and will be the same color as well.

We expect that with the right equipment, and the right design we will be able to keep our hands out of the tank with very few exceptions (quarterly stirring of the sand bed)

And also will be glass all the way, so scratches won't be as much of a concern.

Yes, decided to go with the extra height due to the tall ceilings, and to increase bio-load capacity.

We plan to have 2 algae scrubbers, the skimmer, carbon & GFO rx, and refug. So hope to be able to have a heavily stocked tank with no issues.
 
Dry wall went up today, very exciting.

Time to do a water change on the live rock in the garage also.
Other than that not much going on other than getting ready for the move, and planning for the day I resign from the office. Only 4 work days left.
 
We are moving in town, but just so happens that I was offered a new position with a new company a few weeks ago. I am resigning from my current employer on Tuesday and start the new job, same day.

In my line of work you don't put in a two week notice, because they will fire you the second they find out you are leaving. I am taking a team of 5 people with me, so the whole ordeal had been very covert and a bit stressful.

To make thing more complicated the timing of the new job is such that I can't close on my house with a conventional lender, so I was forced to find a private investor and figure out a way to come up with 40% down. That was not an easy task.

But I believe it will be all worth it once things settle down. The new company has provided me with an incredible opportunity to run the Carolina coast for them, and the sky is the limit. Will be a lot of work, but that never scared me before.

The only reason we put apples in a cart is so we have something to upset in the first place. In my line of work it is running from one contract to another and if there is anything I have learned it is that you need to look out for yourself. Good luck with your new job.

It will undoubtedly be the worst day of my current managers carrer. We are the #1, #2, #3, #5, and #7 producers from a team of 24. So he will be furious. But we made the decision as a team, so I didn't recruit them as an employee of the new firm.

As soon as I made the decision to leave it was 100% locked lips to anyone else, I don't have any intention of violating any non-competes. Wells is not a company you want to have on your bad side.

if they havent sheet rocked your house yet and if you've decided on the apex you should look into getting ordering a couple of these. You can run from where the main controller is going to be thru the walls to the areas of the house you will need. I ordered one 50' length to out to my garage where the water mixing station will be. This allows you to connect modules and power bars to the main controller.

sounds good! Although mine would be a coke, i don't drink ;)

No plans, just cleaning out the garage now i sold the 120.

By the way, i LOVE the Sunset Monti i got from you, it's doing great and looks fantastic. Beautiful deep red and vibrant greens.
