I there any sort of paint that could be brushed on the rocks to "seal" the leaching in the rock? Almost epoxy coating?

Sorry Fishboy, cement doesn't work that way. You either use additives in the wet mix that quicky cure the cement, or you don't, and use the cement straight - which takes time to cure and kure.

Granted - there are cement sealers, but they aren't going to do what you are hoping for...

The Reefceramics looks nice - like my white portland rock, but I have read quite a few threads of where the users had a lot of problems with it and a lot ended up pulling the rock out...

You did nice work Juliovideo. Could you explain the techniques you used to cast your nicely shaped rocks?

I got those reeferrocks- Only good for base rock IMO. Lots of big holes, but no small ones. Could definitely tell the difference between them and the real thing at all stages.

I'd only really use this stuff as base rock and "filler". It's cheap enough to use as stabilizer and foundation, but you can really tell a difference between this and the real thing.

well.. here are two of mine so far...

cement with sand for the first one.. the darker one has salt added. They are going to sit for a month before the water soak. And I haven't done a hot water soak for the one with salt yet... still need to do that though... maybe this weekend if I get the chance...

I have a bunch more made.. just didn't have them outside for pics yet...

I have been following this thread for months and have even made one batch of rock just to get a feel for it . now I am wondering about the ceramic rocks that are showing up in the thead. I have my own ceramic shop and this makes me wonder if it is really posssible to make ceramic rock and if so with what kind of clay. I know that regular ceramic slip has compounds that are dangerous to humans if not handled properly and glazed properly with food safe glazes. I have a small stoneware flower pot that is in my display tank for my clowns to live in and it seems to be safe enough so maybe if stoneware clay were used it would be safe. I guess you could say the ceramics are a hobby of mine. I have over 3000 molds and 3 kilns so it is a glorified hobby but a hobby just the same. Since I only play around with it , I do not know the answers to the question of which clay and I thought someone on here may know the answer...anybody have the answer? I could just make up some rocks and fire them and go through the testing but I am more of a get straight to it kind of gal .

I was reading that some clays contain zinc which was a problem when they were used to make the rock...

not sure of what else might be in there ...

do the boxes of clay state what is in them?

The largest problem with ceramic rock is that it isn't porous. Sure, the shapes are great and unique, but people have proven on here time and time again that they came make some awesome cement rocks.
