The Volcano Tank - Konolua

That's an amazing tank, makes me sad to even look at my normal 75 now ;)

Do you have any supplemental power heads for flow, or do you get enough flow from the split loc line on the return? I could see it being enough flow on half the tank, but would expect dead spots on the far side yeah?

Your return pumps look like Poseidon's, I've heard they're awesome for noise (almost dead silent) but can add up to 5 degrees to your tank temp. Have you noticed any problems with it increasing water temps?

They are are so quiet it is really ridiculous. I didn't believe the reviewers when I first saw their responses. They are very reliable and have great head room. The temperature is drastically less than Little Giants...and I would guess maybe two degrees of ambient temperature increase. Which to me, is just fine.

The water movement is excellent and I don't really have any dead spots. I use the glass as a "return" though too...meaning, geometrically, it shoots the water based off how I position it. We all do this, but I put tons of thought into it prior to setting everything up. My only concern was the back area so one of the split loc lines has another split so one shoots down the other skims the surface. So, water flow isn't that much of an issue. Since I knew I would have no powerhieads or anything, I had to perfect the water flow with the one return and closed loop.

Good evening everyone! Here are some new shots.....

Can you say "big anemone?" Geez.....

IMG_1289.jpg

Gives you a better idea of the size of that thing....

IMG_1291.jpg

Added a small finger montipora (it is on the main rock in the middle behind the astrea snail). Also added a small zoanthid colony that has already grown around the cap and acrylic glue. Probably 7 new polyps already, along with size growth on the original heads. Looking at the picture, it is the small colony in front of the monitpora.

Moved the feather duster farm to the front where there is less light, and lots of flow. The other placement near the clam had led to a sand issue as that area needs constant sand turn over but the huge nassarius and sand stars couldn't manuever the dusters. Looks better to me though now anyways.....

Crab eating.

The new fungia is on the left. You can also see the growth in the bird's nest in the back, along with the capricornus in the back left.

IMG_1305.jpg

The polyps in the "basin" that have done well. There were three colonies to start, of about 2 to 3 polyps each. I tried hard to get the color of the pink ones to be accurate in the shot. I failed. They are almost flourescent in real life due to the 12K bulbs.

This is probably one of the coolest tanks I have yet to come across, truly unique. It's gotta be so much cooler in person tho :) haha.

I WAS going to upgrade my 75g reef to a 135g but this thread has me thinking of doing something like this instead:)

Where did you get the tank from Konolua? Glass cages?

I had a dream last night that I made a bigger version of this, used a ton of mangroves by the rock island to create a thicket of leaves and had a pair of tropical parrots living in it. It was my own little tropical island ecosystem lol.

Bravo on the tank! What a great idea. With as popular as shallow, look-down type tanks are, I can't believe I've never seen anyone else attempt this. Quick question about the crabs: besides the unfortunate jawfish, have any other fish additions succumbed to those big claws? Had any jumpers, fish or otherwise, with that shallow of a tank?

It never ceases to amaze me as the the level of creativity out there with this hobby. You should be proud of that masterpiece. It looks awesome!

Sorry for the almost month-long delay!!

The tank actually looks very similar as before, just with some growth filling in.

Did a water change and snapped some shots. Also got a Diamond Head Goby today as well. Everything is doing well, though the cool zoa colony on the right side of the tank has suffered tremendously from the carpet anemone's growing habits. They are moving away from it, but not fast enough. As such, the colony has shrunk a lot. Also, lost a little mushroom colony that I was very excited about. The Volcano Tank has not seen neglect, but it has seen less attention than normal for a couple of reasons. Anyway, that colony was on a no-glued rock (problem one), and had fallen. Only 3 remain, though they are healthy, so it will most likely come back in a resounding way! I just need to glue the rock in this time.

Fish are happy, bird's nest is great, montiporas and zoa colonies are flourishing....and the anemone of course is out of control! Due to a lack proper feeding, we have lost 2 crabs....all the others are doing well however. Now that I am back in town and ready play, the tank will regain it's form quickly I hope!

Thanks for looking, as always!

Awesome pictures! It looks great as usual!

Sorry to hear about the couple of losses while you were away...it's unfortunate but it happens.

I think I speak for everyone when I say...MORE CRAB PICTURES!!!

Most of us in the hobby never get to see the land crabs you have, and we don't have the ability to keep them because we lack your unique setup. I'm sure others too would love to see more crab pics when you get some new ones!
