Think it's worth a grand?

Is it worth $1000? Probably not. Will people enjoy it and pay for it? Probably. Will it work well? Probably. Will it keep up $/mg skimmate with less expensive skimmers? Probably not.

Can you elaborate your answer? how do you conclude to all this for a skimmer that nobody has yet?

Look at the design of the skimmer. It doesn't offer anything that doesn't already exist. The pump is going to be basically a modded Askoll/Laguna, which is what Red Dragon pumps pretty much are. What about it makes it much different from an ATB or SWC/MSX cone?

I own an SWC/MSX cone, the Askoll version, and have to say that I'm very happy with it. It is definitely the best skimmer I have ever owned. That said, I do feel that I might have paid a little too much for the performance. I don't think I'll ever pay any more than I did for a skimmer. Basically, there comes a point where your returns on your money spent start to drop off.

That thing is going to be a rockstar. Low wattage and will pull a lot of air and it has the seamless cone. It will be built like a tank.

Deffinitely overpriced like everything else I have for my tank:eek1: :eek2:

Yes. Yes. Yes. Its a bubbleking skimmer with a huge red dragon pump.

HUGE? oMG, too kewl, ;) actually it's the same size as the pump on the MSX and ATB.
laguna 1500 :)

The red and white pvc parts obviously make it better than any other skimmer on the market.

Yeah, I don't know about the 'huge' thing but it will be a nice product. It's kinda like a porsche boxster or that little baby mercedes. You'll feel good but your friends may still laugh at you for getting the cheap one. lol

I doubt anybody will be called cheap for buying a 1000 dollar skimmer.

I am curious what is so much better with all these cone skimmers compared to the regular cylinder type skimmer

I would do it just to start a flame war.

GSMguy- since I have your ear, what would be your choice in this range right now. I was all set for a warner cone but I think it may not be enough for my system the way it is shaping up. hurricone, vertex cone, econo cone, msx, or old school octo250 for my 180 sps tank.

for a 180 I'd go with the econo1050 with airstar,(but you do pay a bit more for the quality and customer service) otherwise the msx 1a is going to be the "bang for buck" option.

That 6 inch neck on the RE will preclude it from being really effective on anything smaller than a fully stocked 180g

In the end all of these new cones are going to be good, it's obvious that they are all copies of the ATB, I doubt that they will outperform the ATB by any margin wthout some improvements to the design. unfortunetly I have a hard time telling people to pay hundreds more for the same basic design.

The ATB is the only one that is not made with Chinese acrylic but that may change if they need to cut costs to compete with the clones.

an411 - smoother path for the bubbles, less backpressure for the pump, denser head of foam. all this is basically theoretical at this point but seems valid. the cost is a function of it being new to the market. you get what you can while you can. the cones do cost a bit more to make at this point but not much. you have to get over the intial cost of the tooling and molds for make these thing then it is all gravy.

I have heard that to, just like it is with cars.

Otherwise why do you think the bk are so popular?

The molecules photochemical properties in the red pigment forum a denser component allowing the viscosity expandability in salt water.

Makes sense I just have seen this design come up more and more lately. I guess its all a matter of preference I would need to see the difference first hand to determine if its worth an upgrade eventually.

My thing is...

For $1000 it should significantly outperform similar sized skimmers (going to compare it to the Hurricon and MSX Cone Series). I highly doubt it will be a significant enough difference to warrant the higher price tag.
