Thinking about adding a Neon Goby

Hello All!

I'm thinking about adding a little Neon Goby to my current setup:
AGA MiniBow5 - Currently running the whisper w/ cartridge that came with it, light upgrade to 10W powercompact.
4lbs LR
Crushed Coral base
3 Medium/Small Snails
1 Medium sized Hermit (greyish w/ bluespoted legs, but not a blue leg)
1 N. Wennerae (11ish mm)

Think that the Mantis will eat the Goby? Will I need to start doing regular water changes if I add a Goby, or are they a very clean fish?

I figure that when my mantis gets bigger that adding a fish will just end up as food, so I might as well add something now so that I can enjoy a fish for a bit.

I wouldnt put a neon goby in a tank that size.

plus, they are jumpers.

no point in adding a fish knowing it will be killed.
it probably wouldn't last more than a week or two.

I don't think this is a good idea either. Even if the mantis is too small to take out the goby now, as it gets larger, it will be able to kill the fish. A 5 gallon tank is just too small for the goby to find a secure place away from a hungry mantis.

BTW, I think you need to do regular water changes, whether or not you have a fish in the tank. The mantis, if it is eating regularly, will be putting a lot of waste into the water. As I learned recently, when enquiring about what was wrong w/ Mantizilla (my N. wennerae), water quality is important if you want to avoid problems like bad molts or shell disease.

ditto to all above...no fish in a 5gl....it won't last long and keep the water clean. Mantis are tough but mine loves clean fresh salty stuff. Steve:dance:

I have a 75 with 3 to 4 mantis (florida smasher variety), and 2 pistol shrimp, and have never lost a fish due to predation.

Unless the mantis is a piercer or a severely-starved smasher the neon should be fine. Yes the tank is small, but the neon shouldn't get any longer than 1.5" or so. The 5g may be a little small long term depending on the size and species of the mantis.

Piercers eat fish.

Smashers eats mollusks and crustaceans.


Both types may defend themselves by lashing out when threatened, but it is unlikely that the neon/cleaner goby would ever be viewed as a threat.
