Thinking about getting some TBS

My tank is in need of some renovating. It has been sorely neglected the past year or so, and I need to replenish it. There are not many little micro-organism to be seen, though my fish and corals seem fine. My ongoing project is to get it teeming with life again.

I'd like to take out a layer of my rock out and add TBS to the tank. I'd have to create a holding tank for my current inhabitants, obviously, until the tank cycles.

I only want maybe 15-20 pounds of rock and just a bit of sand. I don't need or want a whole "package." Is anyone interested in TBS right now to save on freight?

Alternatively, if you think it's a terrible idea, I'd appreciate knowing before I do anything. I love the look of TBS, and have heard great things. If you have a horror story, please share!

TBS has its pros and cons.

I personally like it, but prefer to use fiji and marshall since i want lighter rock with more open spaces to it.

It does come with lots of life, but some will die off. The stuff that remains will be pretty sponges and some crabs and snails.

The offside of that is unwanted hitch hikers as well as the cost to ship under water.

I dont know what TBS charges now days. My old tank (75g) was mostly TBS.

Gary (orchidman) has a tank thats purely TBS. Maybe he can give comments or post pics.

Paul.

Jeff and I have enjoyed the TBS in our tanks. The real plus is all the life you receive on the rock. The down side is a couple of the critters that you can receive on the rock.
Hairy crabs and mantis shrimp. I have written up the procedures we use in past messages and I am sure are in the archives or I can relate them again by phone or at a club meeting for those interested. It's not all that negative and for my free 2 cents, the pluses out weigh any negatives that might come along.

Thanks Gary. It really does sound great, but I'm worried about the unwanted hitchhikers. I'm sure I could catch them, but I'm both squeamish and soft-hearted, so I'd have a hard time killing them. :(

Anybody else interested?
