Thinking of changing mt QT proto-call

RBU1

Moving on Up
I would like to get some opinions on this....

I thought I had the QT process ironed out with a little help from Copps....Thanks John...

However....I killed my goldflake angel when I raised the copper treatment to the proper level.

After a discussion with Dr. Aukes at the fish pharmacy he suggests Quinnine as a treatment instead of copper. He states that your treatment time with quinnine is only 7 days making it a lot less stressful on the fish then 4 weeks in copper. Of course I would not only QT for 7 days. I would get the fish in QT and just monitor it for a few weeks making sure its eating and acting normal then do a prazi treatment followed by the Quinnine treatment.

What are your thoughts....????

Hopefully some of the experts will chime in Hint Hint......John!!!!!

Should I be treating every fish? Or should I just QT for several months and observe?

Not an expert but been restocking my tank for the last six months and QT every fish with no problems. For the first week I monitor and make sure they are eating then do 2 treatments of prazi, a large water change then Cupramine for 4-6 weeks. All my fish are clean and healthy. Even worked with a flamed angel and Achilles Tang.

What copper did you use? Cupramine?

did you bring the copper level up to .5 all at once? I've found more sensitive fish can't handle such a sudden increase. I bring it up slowly over the course of a week or so, making sure they eat before another increase. However, i'm far from an expert, so others might have a better solution. I'm not familiar with quinnine.

oh, and I treat every single fish regardless of them showing symptons or not.

No I took a week to get it to .5

I think what you have planned is good. It's been awhile since I've used QS but I think I did a 10 day treatment...waited a week..prazipro for a week...and 2 week evaluation. Think it was a month total.

Well I think my new plan is just going to be...

Get the fish eating and doing well for a week or 2 then do a prazi treatment or 2. Then just monitor for a couple months and only treat if I see something.

I treat with copper always just to do it, the fish can have ich on them in their gills that you never see. It's a low enough level it doesnt bother the fish tremendously but they will spread it to other fish eventually, so I'd rather treat just to be safe.

That's my only recommendation to what is otherwise as a sound plan.

Well the killing of this GoldFlake Angel soured the taste of treating with copper for me. I was doing the same as you Recty treating everything with Cupramine. My only thought is that for some reason GoldFlakes are less tolerant to copper.

Hmmmm, a friend of mine bought three goldflakes out of Xmas islands and treated them all with cupramine, they all survived well and are still alive now, that was over 6 months ago.

Every fish is different though.

i personally cant stand copper , never use it on my fish but i have used praziquantel and hypo with good success in Q periods, i also am a firm believer in the transfer method if done with minimal stress and good water quality

I am getting a Blueline Juv tomorrow. My plan is to get him eating for a couple weeks then hit him with PraziPro. Then just monitor for a couple months. If all stays good in the main tank he goes with no copper......

What makes you blame the copper for the death? It could have died for a number of reasons.

I've had new fish without any meds in the QT tank be dead the next day when it was fine & eating the day before.

PE: quinine. Sorry but I don't think there are any easy approaches to treatment.

I usually use Cupramine, especially if theres even a remote chance of velvet. That said I have considered chloroquine, as its supposedly less toxic to the fish. But you need to maintain a therapeutic concentration of 10ppm (??) for treatment to be effective. So, how does the home hobbyist ensure the concentration hasn't dropped?

That is great on the juvi Blueline! I've had one a week now and its doing great! Tiny little thing!

Anyway, My thoughts on your statement above is this. If you are planning on treating with prazi, your main concern is flukes. If you wait a few weeks, flukes can do enough damage that the fish wont make it anyway. This is just my opinion however, but I dont think you should wait "weeks". The fish should be eating good because at that small it doesn't have the body fat to wait a week with no eating, however, once eating good, I would start the prazi over a 48 hour period and continue feeding multiple times a day so the fish is comfortable eating while increasing the prazi dosage. Im afraid if you wait too long, it wont matter if you dose prazi or not...

x2

I waited too long to dose a trio of wrasses with prazi not long ago in the name of "letting them settle before medicating." I lost the male due to this because by the time I got to treating, the damage was done. They were all eating very well when I was letting them settle, but the male didn't end up making it.

Here is the little guy....The store owner did a FW dip for me while I looked around the store to make sure there were no flukes. He is already out and eating like a pig....
