thinking of switching back to LEDs???

my sps' are growing so fast now (i dumped my leds for MH/t5) i can't keep up with alk/ca additions despite having a CR and dripping kalk. so i was thinking of using leds to stunt there growth? any thoughts?

yeah....you're crazy!!!!! :bounce3: Shorten your photo periods if they are growing too much. I'd get a bigger ca reactor, use kalk or dose 2 part before going back to leds.

Have a link to a recent study nanook?9

Practically speaking, one of our recent TOTM recipients here in Missouri switched from metal halide to T5 and his growth rates were drastically reduced. This was based on observation, but from a guy that is very much in tune on taking notes and keeping consistent husbandry.

A recent study that shows metal halide grows montipora at much faster rates than both LED and T5:

Switching to LED, with the sole purpose of stunting growth, sounds crazy!

I've thought about switching back to LED's, but for heat issues.

Why does it have to be one or the other? I decided that my SPS growth was not good under LED, so I supplement with two 150 watt 14K HQI for 5 hours/day. Seems to work without adding a ton of heat to the tank.

LED's need adjustment periods of about 4-6 months. After that point you can asses whether LED's or metal halides grow sps faster. Can't just switch to LED's and decide that after 6 months your previous MH were growing sps faster.
IMO compared to people I know with T5 and MH, LED's seem to have as good if not better growth rates.

Thank you so much! Have some reading for work :)

How about switching to a higher K rated / lesser quality MH bulb instead of switching out your system... again.

I am thinking about growing my coral in freshwater since they grow so fast and have such great color under saltwater. My reef fish swim around too much too, so I was thinking that the freshwater could help with this too.

No, chsub blames his tank crash on LEDs. This is his way to just blast LED users. I wish they would make him move on! This is another example of someone putting information out there with a hidden agenda.

Well now I just wish that I hadn't replied to his post at all.

A quick look at CHSUB's most recent FTS shows how ridiculous the alk draw claim is Kasey. :rolleye1:
