This Hobby is Sooooo EXPENSIVE !!!

I came home today and found my visa statements for the past 4 months taped to my computer screen. All transactions related to fish supplies were highlighted in RED by my Chief Financial Officer (wife). I was SHOCKed when I saw the Total $$$ she added up. Over $8000:eek1: This doesn't include all the "Cash" purchases from buying used equipment from members here, that my CFO doesn't know about.

Then she saw me with the used Euro-Reef Skimmer that I just bought from Rickyb and asked me "how much did you spent on this thing?". I told her this thing is used and very cheap... Only 35... and I had to skip the "0". And my next visa statement has not arrived yet:fun5:

My 300g tank just arrived and the "equipment list" to be purchased is NOT very short. I don't know how to get approval from my CFO this time.... may be I should use what I learned from work..."It is much easier to apologize than to ask" Am I alone on this??? Or are we all in the same boat with this hobby?

Hello
Been married for 24 happy years, haven't use the CC for fish goodies in 22 years. Remember this is a hobby for me, if I can't pay cash it'll just have to wait!

While I am not at $8000 in four months I too have gone a bit crazy this summer. My CFO knows all, I keep her 100% involved up front. We work off a budget and she gets to spend as much as I do on fish and tools on shoes and purses(that's an over simplification, but you get the point) and if I go over this month it comes of the top next.

Wow, im glad im single. It is a expensive hobby but I just put in a few more hours of OT to cover any extras.

Metal halide lights-- $50.00
Fairy Wrasse--$8.50
ASM-2 Skimmer and pump-- $35.00

Paying cash and fibbing to your wife about the cost---PRICELESS!

Stupid me ... I handed off the bill reviewing/paying responsibility to the hubby last year and I now get monthly updates on how much I have spent on fish tank related items. I have been told I need to "watch my spending".

SaraB- That's so funny! I was told the same thing! Then I was told to go and get a pair of shoes or a new outfit or something instead.

Reefing really is expensive and if one doesn't set a guide down as to how one spends and when, it can get out of hand real easy because the supplies, equipment, and livestock needs never ends. Oh, let's not forget about the electricity which is a monthly reminder even if you do not purchase anything for that month.

I went down this road previously, little weekly purchases turned out to large monthly bills, easiest way to get out is to go cold turkey once in a while or go fish only. :)

Pufferpunk! AND I can still use my shoes to walk! No need for more, I only got two feet.

My wife let me spend only about $2-300 a months and it took about 4 months to set up my 40g breeder and it still needs lot of stuff.
My next buy is 250w Mh. Instead of buying whole things at once I kind of like this slow progressing work which is also a lot of fun to me.
