This Hobby is Sooooo EXPENSIVE !!!

i had over 15k in my old 360 gallon...and im in the process of putting together a 170 cube. i have around 4k in the cube and it doesnt even have water in it yet.

expensive hobby for sure, but i think its worth it when people come over and stare in awe at what we have created IN OUR HOMES....a majority of the population need to spend $20-$100 each to visit an aquarium once a year to see what we see every day.

for me, always had a tank, always will have a tank...i was without one for 5 months while my current tank was being built and the new house was being completed. totally sucked.

What if you romantically tell your better half that you want to marry her all over again - of course she won't refuse that. Now for the wedding register (items your wedding guests will know you NEED), list critical household items such as Protein Skimmer, MH Lights, Powerheads, Return Pumps... you know the basic items that all brides and grooms get. This is clearly a win-win proposition.

Gotfish8 I have been in this hobby for over fifty years and I don't even know what some of that stuff is that you have.
I don't remember what my tank cost, probably a couple of hundred. Three powerheads maybe $70.00, homemade lights and skimmer maybe $20.00. Rocks I collected but I won't count the trips to the Caribbean and Hawaii since I was going there anyway. RO/DI under $100.00. Thats about $390.00.
I guess fish and corals for the last 36 years were up there but since fish live about ten years it was not that much.
I really can't see why so many of you throw so much money at this hobby. I am married almost 34 years and if my wife spent $8,000.00 on a hobby in a few months I would start looking for a new wife.
:eek1:

Hi Paul, nice of you to stop by.
$8.000 is an awful high figure, and the cost is really dependent upon the type of tank you want to have. I think everyone should read the thread about your set up and long term success.

Paul,

that was how much little money I spent on fresh water in the past many years. But for saltwater I haven't figure out how to do it as cheap as you had.

My Oceanic RR tank/stand/canopy $1200
PC lights $350
Aqua-C ev-240 Skimmer - $350 (used)
SUMP $100
Mag12, Mag18 pumps - $230
Live Rocks (350lbs @ $3/lb from members here) - $1000
Sand ( 200lbs) - $200
Typhoon 3 RO/DI - $230
Misc stuff ( test kit, salt, filter pad, powerheads, heaters, Refractometer, fishfood, etc)- > $250
UV sterilizer $???

Live stocks not included.

I thought these are the basic requirement for a healthy SW setup. I don't have any fancy equipment like wavemaker, auto top off, or monitors, etc. I would love to spend much less $$$ if possible, but that is how much these things cost. I just looked at your galery and your tank setup sure look beautiful and healthy. But I don't know how you did it with such low cost???

Kima, I guess I don't have PC lights, Aqua-C skimmer, mag 18 pumps, Typhoon and a sterilizer.
Well actually I do have two PC lights but I made the housing from a Vinyl fence post. I usually don't like to buy ready manufactured equipment because I like to custom build everything myself. I know everyone can't do that. And I don't even know what a typhoon is. Except the ones in the South Pacific.
My powerheads are I think about $30.00 and they last over ten years. I do also have a RUGF but that was just about free, it may even have come with the tank.
My expensive hobby is my boat. I can easily spend $8,000.00 a year on that. There is only so many $8,000.00 to go around.
Have a great day.
Paul
