This One Goes Out To All Those Whos Wife Said NO!!!

Three pieces of glass was my fault 1 piece was theirs. I asked for 12 inche foe a 55 gallon tank when 11.75 would have been perfect. The guys actually cut the fuge glass to 12.5 so i blame them on that one. The guy was super nice and said he would gladly redo the glass and give them to me. Damn my concience, i said no i will pay it was my fault. I should hopefully recive them by next wendsday...fingers crossed...

On the topic of glass fitting did you check to see if the 55g sump can be taken in and out of the stand.I had a similar problem on a 125

Very good point, i will have to figure out a way to make that happen.

On a good note, i was able to procure a sweet deal on a qt tank. My dad just upgraded his fresh water tank to a 125, so i was able to get his 6 month old 75 gallon and stand plus two emporer 400 filters for 150 duckets. I have the 75 gallon now with skimmer curing my evergrowing live rock population. I believe i am going to need about another 50 lbs or build some rock racks.

Does anyone know how to build rock racks or how to build rock racks???

Are you looking for racks that just support the natural pile of rocks or racks that actually hold up and shape individual pieces of rocks into various formations?
The former can be just an acylic sheet with acrylic rods glued on to lift the rocks up off the bottom and out of the sand. the latter can be any combination of acylic rods, drilled holes, epoxy coatings, sand filler etc...
What is it you want to do?

I am thinking more of racks that will make my rock seem like more than what i have. Basically the support rack i guess. Just to get some height out of my rock. Maybe just something to hold them up.

Check out the thread from EnglishRebel. He used the acrylic sheet and rods method to raise his up. Look toward the last three or four pages.
I'll see if I can find the other thread that had great acrylic work with detailed photos of some support systems that made cool looking pillars and such.

so my cousin mike prater came and left, we had a great visit and did not even get to work on the tank? i know what a shame, but he did give me pointers and i believe i can take those and make the rest happen on my own. I did how ever talk him into hunting hermits in the gulf to help get my clean up crew, grand total was 48 hermits.

ok so i finally finished my sump tank and now im ready to ask if it will work. I did my baffles 3/4 inch spaced and middle baffle 3/4 inch off bottom of tank. Question is will 3/4 work?

Depends on the amount of flow going through the sump....the width of the baffles...etc....etc....

If it's going to be a low flow sump then you will be ok. Mine are 1" apart and 1" off the bottom. They are 9" wide and I have about 750gph going through the sump. I wish my baffles were a little wider...flow seems to be just a tad bit much for the width of the baffles. I may change to a smaller return pump to slow the flow.

If you're still wondering about rock formations and lifting your rocks....check out my build thread by clicking on my red house.

I used acrylic rod and drilled my rock. It worked great and everyone that comes to the house says the tank looks like a work of art.

Pics?

I think it will be fine. Like I said, I used 2" spacing and it was way too much. Pretty much rendered my baffles useless as the water travels through so fast the micro bubble never make it out.

Isn't that what a baffle is supposed to do, stop the microbubbles?

Correct you are, thats why I regret my wide spacing.

i will have some pics tonight not very pretty ones but some none the less... I went 3/4 inbetween baffles and 3/4 of the floor for the middle baffle... Cross my fingers and hope it works cause i dont wanna do it again...

A 1 month update and still dry as a bone...

A 1 month update and still dry as a bone...

Ok so i have tussled with this build and what i wanted for a long time. I love freshwater planted tanks, and did a saltwater version of this. I have since then went back to reefing. I now know what i want to do. I am gonna do a marine planted. I have seen very few good looking planted freshwater tanks, but have also seen some that blew my mind. I will also add a few corals in and hope my angels do not find them. As far as stocking my tank i hope for SOME the following:

Big Fish
Imperator angel- i have
Clown tang- i have
Passer angel- want
Blue Face angel-want
Annularis angel-want

Dwarf angels
Potters-want
flame-want
eibli-want
lemonpeel-want

Gobies
Yashia-want
yellow rose-want

Anthias
a sunburst trio-want

Pygmy angels
all-want

I would love to have an assortment of SOME of those fish...

Now being that i am planting the tank i will use alot of grape calurpa both red and green to cover rock (mainly because it spreads fast and fills), then some reds and greens halimedas and gracila or however its spelled. I would also like to do some hardier gorgonians.

That being said i am still a kid at heart so i used paintbrush for a mock up of how i want to achieve a cave system for hiding. and elevation of my rock. Here is a pic...

I will cut and use eggcrate to elevate my rock up into shelves. I will use pvc uprights to elevate and hold up the rock. I will then cover the shelves and pvc uprights with rock i have fully cured in my rock bin. In the middle i will do a single peice with a bridge to the first shelf just to please me. I think this will provide plenty of hiding room as well as homes for smaller fish. Inside the cave i will divide them so there is not just 1 fish owning half my tank cave. Lastly i will begin the purchase of my macros. I have a few corals that will go in and if the angel eats them then so be it. I have decided i like fish far more than coral.

I welcome any and all comments....

Angels will love your planted tank. They will eat all the plants for sure. I really dont think it is possible to have an angel/planted tank.
