thoughts on kessil A150 Led...

sorry for the lack of info on my post but finding info on led lights is becoming a real pain in the butt.i spent 130 on bulbs today so i gess i have another 6 to 8 months to gather info

Color tuneable and spread angle tuneable! I hate waiting for things I want. Could the thread that you found Devaji be linked? I've read the first 4 pages of Google results for Kessil and haven't seen that comment. It's probalbly very recent but I don't want to re-read all of them. Thanks.

How are the corals doing for you now Frick? Photos?

the first 2 videos are good views also

Okay, now we're getting somewhere....

First off, he replaced dual 400 watt lights with the three Kessil A150w's. Kessil doesnt agree to comparisons with the A150w to 150 W MH's, so going from dual 400's two three A150's is not really a fair comparison.

The only thing he stated did not do well after he changed out his lights were his zoanthids. He also stated he had some water quality issues, at the same time he took his skimmer off line. Zoanthids tend to be pretty hardy, but the only other corals he has in that tank are softies and mushrooms. Did the zoas die off due to lighting, due to chemical warfare from the other softies/shrooms, or were the lights responsible?

We dont know as that information isnt really clear. That video is pretty much an opinion related review. It's that guy's opinion regarding these lights.

I'm not a Kessil Fanboy...I dont have any at the moment, and currently tend to be leaning more towards either a DIY led light set up, or the AI Nano, but I feel its important to look at these things objectively.

Here is a good thread regarding what to consider when switching to LED's...

Things to beware of when changing to LED's

Thank you for posting the link to the youtube video.

Yeah I know he had said something about his water and other probs in the tank.its just the only tank that is close to what I have so its the only one to go by so far.I do like the lights so im hopeing that some good videos of longer term use on 24 inch deep tanks show up

I think that for the deeper tanks you're going to need either a more focused led optic, like this example:

Creative use of ecoray LED

ETA......okay, Reef Central has a problem with linking from reef builders for some reason. Go to reef builders .com and look up their post on Creative Use of Ecoray LED....

Or a more powerful light that can penetrate deeper.

If finances are your big stumbling block, (as they are for me) have you seen this website:

http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/StoreFront

None of this is intended to take away from the Kessils. I think they are an impressive piece of gear that is inexpensively priced, and small in size compared to alot of other lights out there. I'm definitely waiting to see the A350w's come out and see how they compare to the bigger more expensive and feature filled led lighting competitors...

I hope you understand where I was coming from with regards to the you tube video...

I'm looking for a valid and factual review of a product. If there is a valid and clearly demonstrable reason why a product, (whatever it is) is less effective than a competing product, I'm all for hearing about it. But an opinion laden review without arguable and repeatable reasons for how the opinion was reached dont help me or others very much.

Does anybody know what the pricing will be for the 350? Will 3x the intensity of the A150 = 3x the price?

I can't find the article at the moment but the reason the a150 was priced so competitively was because it didn't incorporate dimming. The gentlemen from Kessil said the dimming hardware would've almost doubled the price so I would guess the 350 will be more than double.

That would put them up there with the Orphek Dif series and the the Ecoxotic Cannon. I like the compact size of the 350 but it will be interesting to see how it stacks up to the competition.

What is the benefit of dimmable LEDs? Does it justify the cost?

If you have each color in an led array on seperate dimmers you can independently adjust the visible color of your light to resemble a 10k/14k/20k t5 or MH bulb. It also allows for gradual dawn and dusk effects and acclimation periods for corals. Whether the cost is worth it is a personal choice IMO. I think one of the big drawbacks of an LED fixture without dimming is the cost of changing your LED's if you don't like the color. Just my $.02.

does anyone know of links to par on tanks 18 to 24 inches.i asked the lfs about the par on the 15k ones he has set up and he showed me the meter right under the light.the meter said 1 and he said that it was so high that it messes up the meter and it wont read anything else for 30 min or so.he never put it down in the tank for me though.

I agree with Maxx's view on the youtube guys tank. I'm not trying to be mean but his tank has tons of Aiptasia and algae and isn't exactly tank of the month material. He did have a nice tank a while ago in one of his videos without Kessil until a crash. We all have issues with our tanks we wish we didn't have. He's just not the expert source that we need to hear from. 95%or more reviews I've seen and read for Kessil seem to be positive...so I'm waiting to see the new A350s. Another promising thing about the company is they aren't a new start up and have experience designing leds for commercial, home, and plant growing.

Thanks for the link on "things to be aware of when switching to leds" Maxx.

It was the best read on leds I've seen in a while. (link on previous page)
Using multispectrum leds to force the corals to produce nice colors is one of the links main points. Sorry this is a little off track from the title of the thread. Leds are a new frontier so understanding what the corals need should help in making a decision on which to choose.

What I found most interesting was the color spectrum of the LED's and the precise mechanism that causes the bleaching that has been widely reported when using LED's.

It makes sense to me and I'm definitely interested in seeing how the different colored LED's (Red & Green) will affect coral coloration. If the red & green LED's improve/change coral coloration then I'm all in on LED's....

Of course it will take me a couple of years to afford to switch over from my MH's....but it would happen.

It is usually the UV-A that will cause a coral to produce vibrant pigments to reflect this type of wavelength away. I can't see why reds or greens would do anything long term.

The thinking is that corals reflect light spectrums they cannot use. There fore the reds&greens led's should cause the corals to reflect, (show) red & green pigments.

My understanding on UV-A wavelengths was that it increased pocilliporin pigments, (pink) but not reds or greens.

I will find out soon. I have 4 on order. My tank is 60"x24"x24"... Gonna borrow a par meter when they show up.
