thoughts on kessil A150 Led...

Thanks for the pictures. What's the dimension of your tank? I'm upgrading to a 120gallons (4x2x2) and was wondering if 2 will be enough. I'm planning on mostly LPS and softies but a few SPS up high.

It's standard 72"x24"x24" perfecto/marineland 180. 2 on a 120 would be the same in terms of coverage, but the big question of what will live/grow under them, I can't answer yet.

so are you saying that for my 60x18x18 tank i could go with the just 2 of those kessil a150s?

He has 3 units per 72 inches, that's one unit for every 24 inches which is the coverage that kessil themselves say their units can do. If you look at the picture i posted last page, my 30 inch tank starts to get dark towards the ends.

I think if you didn't mind some dark spots on the ends, you could get away with it as far as coverage. Now what kind of PAR you will be getting with just 2, I can't say for sure. To be honest, as soon as the a350 is released I will probably pickup 3 and rotate down the a150's to a shallow frag tank. I really like the look and quality of these lights, but the 24" depth might be pushing their limits.

Those are the sky blue ones right? 10k I have 2 of those on my 40 breeder and love the look they produce so far.

i am starting to read more post about some coral slowly dying under these lights.i am starting to have doubts about them.the suck thing is i really want them to work.it would make the top of my tank so much cleaner

Where are you reading this?

I dont work for Kessil or any other manufacturer or LFS, but if you're going to post something defamatory about a product, you'd better post links supporting your allegations...

Where do you get this? I'm seeing something different. I have a couple SPS frags and several LPSs that are growing really nicely when under these lights.

+1. I think the PAR would be pretty poor. IMO these are best for shallower/smaller tanks. I'm looking forward to the a350 for larger tanks. I'm going to be using my 10k a150 over my ADA 60-f tank (7" deep). I don't have any real experience yet, so take this as a grain of salt; just what i found while researching.

On the kessel site right below their 350 grow is Tuna Blue I wonder what this name could be fore maybe the name of the 350 dimmible aquarium light.

In regards to the PAR talk on these, I received a response from David at Kessil;

"We do not have official PAR readings. There are some posted on different forums, but there seems to be some inconsistency. The linked post from reef central has PAR numbers on post #10. This is only for 1 light and would not reflect how multiple lights would read.

From what I understand there are a few things to note about PAR-

1) PAR is usually a flat value of light between 400-700nm and does not take into account the efficacy of each wavelength.

From what I understand most of the light coral use efficiently is from 400-500nm. PAR readings should be higher from a broad source of light like halides, t5s, or all "white" LEDs that have a good portion of light in the 500+ nm range vs. LEDs that have a mix of wavelengths. That is why most LEDs can be so much more power efficient. Because we can target individual wavelengths that may be most beneficial, and eliminate ones that may not be. PAR typically does not measure what blend of spectrum is the most usable, only photons in a given spectrum range.

For example, and please keep in mind these values are exaggerated for discussion, let's say 1mW of 460nm is 100% effective and 1mW of 560nm is 8% effective, typically your PAR meter will still read a total of 2mW of power and give you a reading based on those results.

2) Our A150W contains a portion of its light in the UV range and that will not be detectable unless the PAR meter is specifically designed to read UV.

We spent over 1 year testing the lights performance and they have been on display at stores for an additional 6-9months. While the A150W is not a direct comparison to a 150 halide in terms of coverage or visual brightness, the feedback we have received is that the penetration, shimmer, and growth has been comparable and in some cases better. Some testers bleached the tips of SPS because they underestimated the power that comes from the lights. Any change in light should be done carefully and thoughtfully especially on an established reef tank.

I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Something to take in consideration. Don't let PAR value determine 100% of your decisions.

here is a quote from a LFS from another forum:

.according to Kessil, the ETA for the A350 should be 3-6 months from now. That's about as close of a date as I can provide. I am actually super excited about this one. When the demo unit was brought to the shop, I almost felt like beating the crap out of the guy and take it from him for myself.... you're going to be really impressed with this new model. It's color tuneable, spread angle tuneable, and super compact and efficient compared to anything else on the market. I can't spill any more beans other than that you'll see!

sounds pretty good. just might put my DIY project on hold...and see.

BTW I don't know the date of the post so I really don't know when the 3-6 month release date gonna be. I am guessing around xmass??

Good points! and those can be applied to All LEDs and ALL types of lights. :)

I agree 110%

any idea about the a350's I have a 250gal DD, LOOKS LIKE SOMETHING I MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN.
They should be well worth the wait for larger aquariums such as your.

I was told last week by Kessil we should see the A350 at the beginning of 2012. But R&D is still in the works so no promises. The Amazon Sun (freshwater plant model) should be around Xmas.

im not hateing and sorry but im also not sure how to post links.that being said there is a a three part you tube vid that in part three he talks about it.not trying to bag on them in fact i am looking for more info on how they would work on my tank.maybe some of you are rich and can just take the plunge but a grand on lights is alot to me.besides you tube im not sure the name of the sites i have ben on.i am just reading everything i see.

Barnnns1,
To link to another website, all you need to do is highlight the web address,(URL), of the site you want to link to, right click with your mouse, scroll down to the copy part, and click on copy. Then come here, right click again in your new post, scroll down to the paste part, and click on that. It will then paste the url into your post here.

When you make unsupported statements that are presented as facts like you did earlier, you appear to be someone who is trying to work some sort of angle,(ie, either a store who sells a competitors product, or even a direct competitor. Both have happened here before).

Now, go find those links or youtube videos and post the links here. You might be saving alot of people alot of money...I dont know anyone who will throw away 1k on something that doesnt work.
