Looking at new skimmers for my tank. Its a 58 Gallon display with a 40 gallon sump. 79 Gallons total water volume. My Skimmer area is 12x15. I want something for around $300 what would you guys recommend? Right now I have a 5" model Reef Octopus but the pump is having start issues.

Thanks.

Upgrade your pump with a Bubbleblaster pump

Vertex is good but quite large. Check out scaquariums.com. Very good skimmers and there is a few threads on here lately about them. A 150 gallon cone skimmer for $129

Yea I like the SRO skimmers as well. Do you think the 2000SS would be overkill? Is it even possible to overskim a tank?

Just so we all understand. I dont want to get a cheapy skimmer or a skimmer I will regret later. The wife has agreed I can buy a new skimmer and this is the last one I will be getting for a long while so I want one that is good quality, easy to work on and will last. I dont really care if its big or small because I have plenty of sump room for the skimmer 15x12 area.

I have heard issues with the Sicce pumps going out should this be a concern when purchasing a new skimmer?

The sicce psk1000 has been known to go out. Personally I would go with the sro1000 model for your tank. There is such think as "over skimming" and can occur when pulling to much nutrients out of the water. From what I heard when calculating the amount of water for a skimmer you don't include the sump (I could be wrong). But the 1000 should be enough. They are made out of great material, and reef octopus offers warranty on both the skimmer Body and pump. Even the most expensive pump on the market, the red dragon's have been known to go out and they only have a 2 year warranty. Reef octopus offers 3 year warranty on the bubble blaster. So you should be set for a little while

the sro1000 will work well. So will the xs160 and the CS1 (both with the new psk600 pump). keep in mind that the sro1000 is usually run very shallow so if you go with that one you may need to build a stand for it or run a lower sump level. The 160 and the CS1 can be run at deepr varying levels. The CS1 has the pump inside the body and is very similar to the NAC7 with a better transition, pump and bubble plate. The bottom of the skimmer has rubber pads and the pump is also placed on rubber to further reduce vibration and noise. The xs160 has the pump underneath with the acrylic resting on the bottom but can easily be quieted down more by splitting a couple pieces of vinyl tubing and sliding the acrylic sides into the tubing.

all are good skimmers

I haven't seen any threads with people that have problems with the PSK1000.

Bubble Magus NAC6 or NAC7. Both are priced well and would be a great fit. I have been running a NAC6 on my 90g system with great results. Upgrading to the NAC8 as soon as it shows up!
