Tips and Tricks on Creating Amazing Aquascapes

So any ideas for a 55gallon? One of the things I was thinking was a long shelf that doesn't touch the bottom. Really not sure what size would work best. I was thinking 10 to 14 inches. The thing that sucks is the tank isn't that wide.

Yea 55g tanks are frowned upon here on RC when It comes to aquascaping...I had a 55 gallon tank and stand that i made but ended up selling it to get a 40 breeder for the width. Way more happier with the 40B. If you want a bigger tank just go with a 75...same size as the 55 but wider like the 40

Well I got the tank for free so. :hammer:

By the way what is the size difference for a 40?

Even more of a reason to sell it...sell it..buy a 40 breeder from petco 1 gallon sale right now I believe and then use the remaining cash for other equipment! Win win situation lol

Trying lol...

Haha youll love it way more though lol
Good luck on the ideas wish I could help but only have a 40 B

Maybe just do like 3 big rocks or something like that so you have room for corals to grow?

So far i know want something like this but smaller. Also im wondering if it would be easier to make it out of Tonga shelfs or would that look like crap?

I am currently attempting this. It's work in progress at the moment. I ordered the branches. The tank footprint is 2'x4'. One thing I noticed is that the branches are much thicker relative to the size of the tank. So unless you have a very large and tall tank you will not be able to create the thin branch look. I will do something very similar (with the hanging ledge about 40% of the total length) but it will be flatter than the reference picture. This is not important. When the corals fill in you will end up with the same look. The tank will be almost 100% SPS the branches will form a almost flat platform with 2"-3" variation on height.

I also try to use at fewer branches as possible. Just enough to have spots to plant the corals. Less rock = more elegance + more room for fish and corals.

The structure is kept low so it will be easier to place powerhead. I will have a gyre 150 blowing across the length of the tank. The height is enough for fish to swim comfortably.

The supporting rock under the ledge is only temporary while the epoxy hardens.

Matt, that's awesome. Should look great with all the display areas filled in with corals, but I'm loving your sump/equipment setup even more.

Just finished my aquascape on my 225g. Thoughts?

This looks good, but I'd remove the smaller rocks on the sandbed and remove the two rocks below the overhang. The overhang is great, but the rocks below it distract from it. I like to take small chunks of rock and epoxy them into the cracks between to big rocks. This makes the two big rocks look like one. This could make your rocks look more natural.

The other suggestion I have is to build the base of that shelf rock a bit more. It looks a bit unnatural.

Super glue gel and plumbers epoxy is your friend. Once you one it, lock it down. You can always tweak it by epoxying smaller rocks to your main structure.
