okay so we've all heard stories of how toxic zoos can be, yet we still dont use protection, or atleast i didnt until this point. i'm sure all of us have touched / did something with zoos. BUT, eye protection is a must.

so i got a piece of rock with zoos on the underside that wouldnt get light. the matt scraped right off with a scalpel. somethin happened and i think some water or somethin splashed in my eye.

immediate burning, i thought, OH SH!T they were right!!!! so i ran to the bathroom and flushed for 2 min. went away in a bout 1 hour, was feeling normal, still red. next day, red got worse, and about 18 hrs later started feeling like something was in my eye everytime i blinked. reddening got worse. went away within 2 hours.

next day (yesterday) reddening was about the same, maybe a bit more, and since i work in the ER, they gave me some ophthalmic gel called GENTAK and i put it on. 3 doses so far, reddness and irritation still there.

anyone have any similar experiences? i cant really find anything on the web with great details... cause the doctors were

pics taken today, approx 3 days after.

it's gonna be there a while. i got some paly splatter in my eye once and it was red for a good 3-4 days. also check for styes developing, because zoa mucous contains a ton of bacteria, more so than your normal eye flora, which could cause infection.

there was a long discussion about it a few years ago - if you search for palythoa and toxin or palytoxin and you can get all the info. i don't do anything in my tanks without gloves, eye protection is covered since i wear glasses.

found the old link within an old link. anyhow, for those that don't know about it and why you should protect yourself - here you go http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=158730

As an optometrist, I would recommend you to go see an OD. From what you are describing, there could be a foreign body lodged somewhere in your eye, probably upper eyelid that is causing the irritation. Just my guess, I cannot tell unless I examine your eye.

Any questions, feel free to PM me.

My eye was much worst when I got shot in the eye by a spitting mushroom. I went to the ER and the doctor said it’s probably calcium carbonate that caused the extreme!!! pain and redness. When I say extreme I mean extreme!!!!! It was like someone was trying to yank my eye out of my head with a fork.

I had some pretty pink ones I tried to move...
I tore their flesh when moving them, has a cut on my finger...

in 15 minutes my finger was numb.

in 2 hours the entire lower part of my arm was numb

in 3 houres the numbness hit my shoulder and I could tase metal in my mouth.

48 hours later my muscles were sore and the metal tase went away. Scarey!

Palytoxin can be fatal. Unfortunately it's so rare that most doctors would never think to look for it. They gave you a eye medication for pink eye (feces/bacteria induced) imo.

Make sure you mention to your OD that you may have come in contact with Palythoa, and make sure they know what it is.

Opthamologist. Doctor of Optometry.

OD is an Optometrist. An Opthamologist is an MD. They both go through 4 years of post grad school, but an MD can perform surgury such as Lasic, where an OD can't.

My wife is an OD. I asked her what she would reccommend and she says you should definitely go in to get examined. She would check your cornea to make sure there is nothing on it and also probally prescribe an antibotic, not a steriod, just in case if there was an bactrerial infection, also rinse with synthetic tears and come in daily to check the prgoression. HTH.
