Tony B's 9ft 800 gallon sps reef system

28 Sep 2012

Small update.

I'm slowly moving over more sps and securely fixing colonies with putty.

I managed to find a powder blue tang, I was reluctant to add one without quarantining first, but my self discipline collapsed. The tang promised me he was spot free, he assured me. So I hope he was not telling fibs!

I turned off my phosphate reactor for a few days, as the tank looked a little too starved of nutrients, the rock still looks like virgin reef bones. Sure enough I've now got a very mild dusting of algae, but only the brown stuff, hardly any green. I guess it's better to be in this position rather than having huge algae outbreaks, as it's far easier to add nutrients than remove them. It's fair to say that the curing process on the reef bones worked a treat.

There has been a huge explosion in microfauna, loads of little pods and shrimps.

The corals are not settled yet - I think it will take a few months, every time I add new corals the water goes cloudy with putty and it upsets the system for a couple of days; I usually use 2-3 packs of milliput per large colony.

Colours are, as expected, slightly down but overall the majority of corals and the system as a whole is doing very well indeed.

Enough pointless waffle, here's some pIcKtUoRs:

Here we go, skimmer pron! The 2 ltr coke bottle is there to give a sense of scale....

Maybe within the next week or so I'll get time to decommission the XP3000 and put the XP5000 online :)

Small update but I couldn't resist sharing a photo of my new skimmer! :D

can I kidnap you and your tank?

If you're female, reasonably attractive, aged between mid twenties to early thirties then there's a strong chance I'll say yes ;)

Good luck with this system, its looking amazing. Are you going to add more t5 as your tank 90cm wide? I see your tank 80cm high and does the t5 have enough power to punch to the bottom? How high is the t5 unit mounted above the tank?

Thanks for the kind words....

The lights are about 3 inches above water's surface, all corals are growing well and with pleasing colours.

And now.........

Look what has landed in my frag tank!

Nice rock work. Is the rocks held together strictly with Milliput?

Thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Rock work was assembled when dry and clean, 100% milleput used. I think I got through about 60 packs (didn't see the point in having week joints).

beautiful tank and great planning.. I like when the aquascaping is as nice as the corals.. I have a question for you. I'm curious to know What the tank looks like at night. Specifically, if all the fish find good sleeping spots in the minimalist rock work?

Oh wow! your last tank was one of my favorites, this one's ridiculous. So much more room for your corals to grow. I'll definitely be following this system
