Toofrigginswt's Custom 125 Gallon Tank Build

I chose to do internal only because I feel that it's easier for me to maintain and clean. Knowing how clumsy I am, I'd probably snap something and cause a leak if the pump was external. I can't afford leaks because I have hardwood floors.

I know a lot of people prefer external because there's less heat transfer and they tend to be more quiet. However, the pumps that we have available to us on the market nowadays are all pretty quiet and efficient. That's why I chose internal and have been happy with the setup so far.

Good to know that, thanks for the input.

Just curious, what exactly does this piece do on your return line?

Please make sure you check your check valve often! I've heard so many stories of when they fail to do their job, I wouldn't trust one. Hopefully its just a backup and your sump is large enough not to overflow if it fails.

Great build otherwise. Really nice work. I love the red PVC, really sharp.

Thanks for the compliment.

I agree with you 100% and I appreciate your input and concern. I've read stories of them failing as well. It's not my primary fail safe. I made sure that my sump could support the volume of my tank in case of a power outage, which it does. I also drilled 2 holes on each of my return in the display to further prevent back siphon.

How do you go about skinning a stand like this? Strong magnets countersunk into wood panels?

I'm not too seriously considering getting a tank fit for an achillies tang and really like the open work areas afforded by not having permanent sides..

I used white melamine mdf panels with magnets. I didn't countersink the magnets and it still looked pretty good. I just used Loctite superglue and clamped the magnets on until it dried. Some people use the stronger rare earth metal magnets which might work better. I used magnets from Lowes that were about 1/4" thick and they held up each mdf panel perfectly fine. I used four magnets on each skin (one in every corner).

Btw.... I just read through your tank build. I really like your progress logs. How's your tank doing now?

Am about to make my tank the way I want it, urs is looking beautiful and inspired me to built mine, been thinking to do it bot my budget is limited.
My tank will be 1/2" glass, starphire front panel, center dual over flow,
tank size 60" x 24" x 26" about 160gal. stand and refugium is easy and low cost for me, the problem is the tank $$$$

Very nice build. Keep the pics coming. Mite have to steal your idea for painting the PVC red. Beautiful.. Question, where did you buy the 3 chamber dosing container from. Please let me know. Thanks

Thanks! I agree that you should make your tank the way you want it. At the end of the day, you'd be proud of it because you put it together with your own two hands. You don't have to have the best and most expensive equipment to have a successful tank. I've learned that in this hobby, patience is the key to success. Good luck with your build and be sure to update us on your progress.

Feel free to steal! I purchased the 3 chamber dosing container from reefshops.com. Keep in mind that it's a company based in China. Shipping was quick but it is going to be expensive if that's the only item you're going to buy. Instead of buying directly from their website, I purchased it through their international eBay auction only because I felt more protected in case I had problems with the shipment. Hope that helps.

Very nice setup. I'm digging the red pvc, makes everything looks so clean. I might have to paint my stand and my pvc red too, lol.

Love this build! You and I have a lot of the same tastes! LOL I'm planning a new build and learned a lot of new ideas from the thread...

I love the Trig Sys sump too and that was a great idea of matching it with the red plumbing. I wanted to ask is you could send me Paul's info for the custom stand? Thanks!

watch out for those check valves if a snail gets in there it can prevent the valve from closing. It happened to me cost me thousands. I just drilled a very small hole to the return feed ans water trickles out but it cuts the siphon right away and no back up occurs.
