There is an interesting article in the journal Current Biology, 13: 2190-2195, Dec 16 2003 by Kortschak et al, which suggests that genes of Acropora millepora could in some cases share a higher homology with human genes than some of the more classic genetic model organisms such as Drosophila and C. elegans. These researchers are suggesting that coral could make for an interesting genetic model. Im not sure if you have covered this but I found it interesting none the less.
