Total disolve solids (TDS)

I just wanted to share this experience with everyone in the club as means of education, I recently started getting some nuisance algae and cyanic in my 210gal SPS tank, I couldnââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢t explained why all of the sudden it started happening since I had not made any changes in the tank, well, unfortunately not having made any changes appeared to have been the problem, I remembered that I had not check on the RoDi unit which sits outside the house I immediately got replacement filters for the first two stages and got them changed, I took a reading of the TDS and it was 113ppm going in and 010ppm coming into the tank, I went ahead and ordered new resin and a spare for the fourth stage of the filter (Di unit) and to my surprise the TDS only went down to 007ppm once I change it.
I started reading more about this and found out that 007ppm is acceptable if not normal but that you could bring that down even further by installing and additional Di unit in line, I went ahead and installed a fifth stage into the filter and recheck the TDS, to my surprise this last cartridge brought the TDS down to 000ppm.
Iââ"šÂ¬Ã¢"žÂ¢ve already started to notice positive results in this specially in my smaller tank were I use this water for the top off.
Over all cost was less than $30 for the canister and the resin, I think it was a good bang for my money, I hope this turns around and eliminates the problems with the algae so far it looks as if it is disappearing rather quickly, I have a scheduled water change tomorrow which should further help with the issue.
I hope this info was helpful.

Rogger, if the 1st DI stage is in good working order, it should produce 0 tds water as well. The only reason for the 2nd DI would be redundency in case the first one was either used up, or channeling and not filtering properly.

FYI for others in the area....Plantation has about the cleanest tap water you'll ever find. The city uses a membrane system at the water plant, and it's just 30ppm out of the tap. I run an RO/DI with a 75gpd membrane, and within minutes of starting it up, the TDS from the RO stage settles in at 0ppm. The DI has so little work to do, I expect it to last half of forever.

my tds is around 200-250, and my ro/di comes out 0. but dang. you guys got clean water compared to me!

I agree 30ppm out of the tap is really good, I don't think I get my water from your same source, I live in Weston and I get my water from the city of Sunrise and it is 113ppm before filter.
I also meassure the 007ppm with a brand new resin (nuclear grade).
You may be right about the half of forever at least that is the way I thought until this happened to me just remember that a full sized cartridge will absorb about 6800 ppm of TDS so divide the TDS coming off your membrane into that, if it were 10 it would give you about 680 gallons of DI water.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Plantation's water is independent from the surrounding towns.

Since my RO/DI went into use a year ago, I've used it to mix ~1000g of saltwater, plus another ~500g or so in evaporation. If I estimated my water to average 1ppm, I've used just under 1/4 of the DI's capacity in a year.

Roger, how are you running the flow thru the Di Cartridge? I ask, because i run mine with the water going thru it from the bottom to the top. If you follow the housing "in" and "out" labels, your wzter will be running from the top thru the media and out the bottom, this creates channeling.

My TDS right now is between 3-7ppm;s with only ONE DI chamber. Been running the DI upflow for a few years now with excellent results.

Hope this helps, JOHNNY

Johnny, mine enters the chambers through the offset hole, travels down and enter the actual di cartridge through the bottom, then exits through the middle hole out into the next stage. At least the type of cartridge I have would not work if I reverse it.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but it seems like I have the right attention.

I've been due for replacement cartridges for awhile, I'm about to order from MarineDepot and I'm not sure what to order. I'm definately getting the inline TDS meter, but I figured I might as well get the replacement parts just in case the meter tells me I need to change them. I have the Kent Maxxima 24gpd, the cheapest one on Marine Depot. Is there any limitation or recommendation for the replacement cartridges? I'm assuming the membrane is the smaller cartridge on top, the carbon is the first large chamber, then sediment, then DI resin..is this correct? So I need .5 micron carbon, some form of sediment cartridge then a resin cartridge, and perhaps a new membrane? New to this RODI filter anatomy.

The actual Ro membrane should last about two years, assuming you change the sediment and carbon filters regularly approx every 1000gals. I buy my sediment and carbon filters at lowes and they work perfect they have a great variety of sediment filters, I buy my Di resin from "the filter guys" they have good prices and are very good with CS and fast shipping their site is http://thefilterguys.biz/
I think they also sell the tds meters and may even give you a discount for been a club member check them out.

Rogger, i feed the water coming out of the RO membrane to the "out" port on the DI cartridge and it comes out from the port labeled "in" and that's the water that has less than 7ppm pf TDS. Not sure if i'm being clear? I use the refillable DI cartridge bu buckeyesupplies.com

Thanks for the help, just ordered my replacements.

I just ordered my replacements and a TDS meter from the filter guys, they're offering a 10% discount for the next week if anyone needs anything. They were very helpful in helping me figure out what I needed.
