Total System Levasole Planaria Kill Recipe

Well I am finally flatworm free now for 3 weeks. I did a series of 3 doses.
I have a 29 gallon mixed reef with 10 gallon sump.
First week I did a little over 1.5 dosage and did immediate WC of 6-7 gallons.
Second week, 1x dose and small 2-3 gallon wc.
Third week, 1/2 dosage and no WC except the next weekend when I got home.
I did run carbon and I liked to blow out the rocks after dosing.
I am still keeping the levasole and I want to see how I am still doing in a couple months but I cannot pick out one anywhere in my tank.

Thanks for all the help everyone and hopefully I never have to deal with these things again.
Good luck to all others.

Congrats!

I treated the 65G again yesterday and had hundreds new dead ones that I syphoned out. Much better than the thousands that I had last week from the first treatment.

Even though the 120G had more of them than the 65G I haven't seen any new ones appear in it. I'll treat it again tomorrow anyway. I have not done a water change in either tank since the first treatment last week but I do have a bag of carbon in each sump and my skimmers have been working overtime.

Hi all~

I read all post from start to end. and I have a question about levasole dosing.

1. I have 100gal SPS tank and use zeovit method, zeovit uses bacteria to control nutrient. If I use levasole to kill FWs, It kills bacteria too?

2. What is the proper carbon quantity of 100gal?

3. Waht is the difference between levasole and Salifert FWExit? they has same ingredient?

4. 1/2 T or 1/2 t to 240ml DI water? T and t is different.

5. I can get levasol in Korea . It is made by Janssen and white power form. Can I use this? We use this medicine for killing Camallanus of FW fish

I can't really answer most of the questions except it is 1/2 t (teaspoon) per 240ml RO water and the difference between this and Flatworm Exit is this is much cheaper and seems much more effective. I'm not sure what the actual chemical is in Flatworm Exit. Maybe Cleveyank or others know that answer.

Yeah, the main difference is this stuff works better and is cheaper than the Exit. I can't find Salifert's active ingredient listed and I don't think it's available.

I do not believe it has any impact on bacteria of any kind. It attacks any kind of worm fiercely though.

I don't think you can overdose on the carbon. How much of the carbon is exposed and to how much flow is going to be more important. If you have a lot of flatworms get as many as possible out before dosing. A reactor would help with the carbon to act more quickly to remove any toxins. Skimmer going helps in removal too.

I can say this, it was well worth it and I have no regrets. I lost a couple of snails - they fell off the glass and couldn't right themselves later. Also I have a red brittle star that is alive but appears to still be semi-paralyzed from the levasole. No other losses and fish and coral didn't seem bothered in the least. Good luck and let us know your results...

I treated the 65G again today. There were fewer this week than last week but still a couple of hundred. I'm still amazed that I haven't seen a single one in the 120G after only treating it the one time and it had way more than in the 65G. I haven't retreated the 120G yet but probably will sometime in the next two weeks as a preventive measure. It may be that the two Yellow Coris Wrasses and Spotted Mandarin are now keeping up with any new ones that show up.

I do not know the chemical make up of FlatWorm Exit.

Since there are actually many possible worming chemicals used on everything from Dogs, Cows to Fish it's hard to nail down possibles.

This works and so long as it's not banned I guess we'll be able to deal with these nasties. I've been busy so I have not tested the other capsules I picked up. And this sounds funny...but I'm gonna have to pick up some flatworms somewhere. :)

Unfortunately, I should wait to buy levasole until December. SLast weekend, I syphoned them with hose and my tank status is not serious, I think...

I have more questions to ask to experts.

1. After dosing it, When does it start to change Water?

2. When should I put the carbon? Before dosing Levasole?

3. My Flatworm is not covered sand or rocks completely, I can see the 50~100 ea in sand here and there, and there are more at rocks. I have 100gal tank and net volume is 100g
(including sump) How much should I put the carbon. Of course I know using reactor for carbon is effective, but I want to use filter sock and put carbon in it. 1~2kg is OK, or more needed?

Thanks in advance~!

I treated the 65G for the fourth week in a row and still had flatworms, but not enough to even bother syphoning them out this time.

I still have not seen a single one in the 120G that I treated only once, three weeks ago.

it's been a few weeks and my whole system is still clean. would definitely do this again if needed, but a dip in flatworm exit is going to be employed in every single frag that goes into my system.

I treated the 65G for the 5th week in a row, today and see fewer than 50 dying flatworms. Unfortunately, I hae a Lionfish in this tank so I can't put any natural predators of the flatworm in it to help out.

I still ahve not seen a single one in the 120G since I treated it over a month ago, but I do have a couple of Coris Wrasses and a Spotted Mandarin that probably helped out with that tank.

Question for you - what does the 65 and 120 have for substrates? I had a tank no matter how many times I treated with FWE I couldn't get rid of the flatworms - until I removed the DSB. I don't know if the flatworms were somehow taking shelter in the DSB or if it was absorbing the FWE or what. Curious to see if there is a difference in substrate between the two tanks.

Hi all

I could not get levamisol ,so I tried to use Flatworm Exit.
It worked well without problem, but I could not kill all of them.
Fortunately I could get the levamisol product yesterday. this product is for pig but the manual said it contains 10% levamisol.
That means 1g of this product has Levamisole HCl.....100mg and no other chemical component.

Can I use this?

http://dsmbio.cafe24.com/product/product/36.html

and What is quantity of this needed to use this?

I noticed quite a few red/rust flatworms on my sandbed recently so I decided to give this a try. I think they came from some pieces of live rock I got from a local reefer awhile back and then the population gradually increased - slowly but surely.

I added 0.5 g of Levamisole (from Sigma) to a system of 100 gallons total water. Very interesting that the flatworms started to move faster shortly after dosing, then like has been reported they rapidly curled up and floated into the water column. Very cool to see actually! I kept my skimmer and carbon and polyfilter going through the whole process, and I think the treatment wiped out >99% of the flatworms. Fish and corals seem completely fine. Snails did not seem that stressed either. I did dose on the very conservative side, not knowing what to expect. 24 hours later I did a 15% water change. No losses that I can see, except for a harlequin shrimp but I cannot be sure that it died because of the levamisole. It wiped out most of my asterina star population and my other theory is that it may have starved :(

I plan to do another dose this weekend to wipe the few survivors out completely but all seems well so far (fingers crossed). Many thanks to CleveYank and others in this forum.
I wonder if flatworm exit has the same active ingredient, if someone can provide me some I could do the experiment to find out.

If I get this levamisole in US, Should I buy this one?

Thanks in advance

Yep,
That's the stuff. They were out of stock and it was rumored to be pulled off the shelf for a while. As far as can you get it. I think if Tractor Supply has it in stock, your only possible restriction may be on your end. Dependant if it's allowed to be shipped into S. Korea. With the shipping cost involved etc, might want to get a couple other hobbyist to go in on an order too.

Since I had a couple days off and some free time today, I finally got around to treating my system. I have a 180 display with a total system volume of about 260 gallons.

Immediately after the initial dose I could see that the flat worms were agitated. Many were moving around, rather rapidly. Within moments my water column was filled with flatworms. Not sure if this is an accurate observation, but it appeared that they lost their grip but were still alive, trying to swim to a new location. I observed more than one floating away and landing somewhere else and continuing to move. I proceeded to filter as many as I could and used a power head to blow them off of rocks and coral.

I then continued to observe the tank.

~ Mushrooms shriveled.
~ I have (maybe had) a large population of bristle stars. Many floating in the water column, not sure if they are alive or not.
~ I also observed agitated bristle worms and pods coming out of hiding. Unusual activity for mid day.
~ The Nassarius snails all emerged from the sand and were "standing" tall out of their shells. I got a picture of this but the camera battery died right after.
~ Yellow cucumber seemed puffed up, not it's normal shape.
~ So far the following fish are moving about: Naso tang, Yellow tank, pajama cardinals, GSM clowns, Bartlet Anthias and Spotted Mandarin.
~ The Niger trigger, is hiding, but I can see it is moving.
~ All urchins have fallen from the rocks, but are moving.
~ Initially the bubble level in the skimmer (MRC-2) dropped. Within 15 minutes it was back to skimming wet.

I am going to wait about 1 more hour then do a water change.

The sad thing is that I can still see flatworms attached to things and they are hanging on. Looks like a second dose will be required in a few days.

Planning on nuking my tank tomorrow. May skip the w/c and just dose carbon since no ones SPS seems to be affected.

Update.

As predicted the treatments didn't kill all of the worms and months later they keep reappairing.
Last weekend I dosed as usual, but most of the worms survived so this weekend I increased the dosage untill I had almost doubled it before they started to suffer and most died. Still I see some survivors already. It's unclear if the worms are getting resilient to the treatment or if the medicine is getting less effective somehow.

I'm 3 hours into it. Here are my observations:

~ Trigger still hiding, but is breathing.
~ All other fish swimming about.
~ Massive quantity of bristle stars and bristle worms out on the sand, almost in small piles.
~ Nassarus snails back under the sand.
~ All Mushrooms still shrunk.
~ All 4 anemonies have deflated.

I will do another small water change tomorrow.
