TOTM quality 6' SPS tank for under $1k? The 5.56 build thread; AKA a really bad idea

Alk is high, runs 10+. I know about the WCs but I had to siphon those suckers off a few corals.

They were so thick on the glass that they literally glued my magfloat to the glass, it wouldn’t turn corners :(

Use turkey baster and run filter socks for few hours. Is you want to syphon those without WC, you can put a filter sock in the sump and drain into that.

They go right through a 100 micron sock. What I did was to wrap a 5” 100 micron socal in several layers of paper towels and stick it in a 7” sock. The 5” sock turns green from bits of alage I pick up but the paper towel layer turns brown and stinks of Dino’s. The 7” sock comes out clean. I’m going to run this setup again overnight see how it turns out.

I’m running IO. Any suggestion on another salt for my next WC?

I usually use mesh 200 micron socks only before WC, blast the rocks and let it run for few hours and then do my WC. Sock become clogged after 3 or 4 hours if I don't remove it.

Honestly I don't think there is anything wrong with IO.

BTW your tank is new and you have to expect all sort of algae before it get mature.
Sand of course is magnet for Cyano.

Looks good! I gotta say, doing a water change is the #1 no-no with Dinos. It will make them absolutely explode in abundance.

I have read that a lot but in this instance I got no explosion. They did come back but nowhere near the extent they were befor the WC and it's been several days now.

I'm trying to figure out what the heck is feeding them. I think that it might be me using these... they look innocent enough until you look at the bottom and the expiration date is October 2009.

Very lucky mark! When I thought I had them beat, I did my first water change prematurely... The next day it looked like I had done nothing, the explosion in dinos was significantly worse than it had ever been. Really sucked.. Months of work gone overnight, I almost wanted to cry lol.

I'm guessing it was a bunch of cysts that had opened due to favorable conditions. They'll form a cyst and wait you out and hatch when it feels right.

So if you beat them, keep an eye out, maybe a few weeks to a few months later, some will start coming back out of their protective cysts, and it's back to battle IMMEDIATELY or they will re-establish.

After finally getting rid of mine completely, they came back three times. The first time I thought it's just a few -- huge mistake. The second time and third time I went to war immediately, took zero chances. Saw one growing on a coral? Removed coral, cut off the growth and tossed it, dipped the coral in FRESH WATER, and put it back... Coral wasn't thrilled but it lived, dinos didn't.

Great news ... i think. In my battle against Dino’s, I had been leaving the glass uncleared. Thinking being a) they are easier to remove from the glass B) the more Dino’s on the glass, the fewer everywhere else. Wel, today the glass is covered in green alage, there’s still Dino’s there but the green is kicking their butts! I’m going to continue to overfeed the tank for a few more days and hopefully this puts an end to that!

I have added a O3 genorator and am running 2 hrs a nite. It makes thewater amazingly clear and the Dino’s really don’t like it.
