TOTM quality 6' SPS tank for under $1k? The 5.56 build thread; AKA a really bad idea

Can’t or plainly won’t go through all the posts... for Calcium, Are you dossing two-part? CaRx? I see you have Kalk; Wouldn’t Kalk keep pH on the higher side?
A friend of mine has both, CaRx and Kalk and seems to be pretty stable on the pH readings.

I'm using CaRX and kalk I'm pretty confounded as to why my pH is so low. DKH is running at 10.? and ca about 430-440 Due to adding vingar to the kalk for carbon dosing to lower nitrate. Nitrate was at about 60+ a month ago, just took a 40PPM reading an hour ago so I am makeing serious progres there. But the pH sticks between 7.8-8.1.

Spent $40 on hermits and snails new overage $499.85

Just an FYI, my tank hovers around 7.8. I get great growth, and don't think low ph really effects the corals.

I read some places that the grow faster at 8.2 and I want my tank to look like Nick's ASAP.

BRS is testing this now. They've been testing for a few months, and after about 6 months growth they will compare corals by weight.

I don't know if any official studies have been done yet, but higher pH is believed to have a big uptick in coral growth. From an anecdotal standpoint, most of the people who've used co2 scrubbers see a large uptick in Alk/Cal/Mag usage, and report increased growth.

Until the BRS 'study' is done, it's all a biological/chemistry theory, and anecdotal evidence.

Tank problem.

Tank problem.

Well I am going to hold off on Co2 scrubber

I am having a major issue with my tank. I recently offered to bank some corals for snoob. As it were I really didn't have room for more than a few frags left in my tank and he just gave me about 20 heigh end colonies. I managed to kinda find places for everything but I'm really going to need to thin the herd. There are coral crammed everywhere.

Haha, nice problem to have :)

How are they looking?

No idea, had to rush out the door to Boy Scouts the moment I got the last one in the tank, didn't even have time to put the lights / canopy back. Then I got called out tow work and my wife picked up my son from me on my way into the office. Top is still off the tank. Hope no fish jumped.

Dead Acro smell filled my house.

Dead Acro smell filled my house.

So I get the corals all dipped in the water last night just in time to run out the door and get my son to scouts. Managed to clean up all my dipping trays in the kitchen mess but didn't have time to even get the lights and canopy on for a look.

At scouts, I get called out for work and I have 30 minutes to get to an office 40 minutes away. Meet my wife at a gas station so she can take my son and make my 30 minute expected responce time in about 42 minutes which seems close enough because I haven't heard anything yet.

Turned my callout into my 8 hr shift and walked I my front door at 5:00 this morning to the smell of dead acropora.

The whole house stunk of dead acropora and the skimmer was overflowing.

Cleaned and adjusted the skimmer, new filter sock, fresh reactor full of GAC and manual on the ozone genorator. The smell cleared up quite quick.

There are 4 colonies with 30%-80% RTN. Another 5 with 1%-29% RTN, 2 that don't have very good PE and look to be on the edge.

The other 13 look great a and all the LPS/Zoas are loving life.

All in all I'm not surprised. Just glad my system was strong enough to take that hit and not crash.

Sorry to hear that Mark. I have one piece that is bleaching at the tips and another frag that bleached last night. So over all most of the pieces I got from Mark are doing well so far.

Well, the ones I got sat in a bin for another 20 hrs before I got there and I did dip everything.

Looks like I’m going to lose 4 colonies and one frag from mark’s tank.

Hopefully the dieoff has stopped :(

Hopefully the die off didn't kill any of your coral. If they did I owe you. Let me know.

The dip must have did them in. The remaining coral sat in the bins for another couple days and doing fine at their new home.

Nice meeting you and thanks for stopping.

Not just the dip, my alk was a little high due to doseing vingar in my kalk for nitrate control.

None of mine died off and I'll lose about 7 of yours which I am very sorry about but I have a strict dip and inspect every coral rule.

The one time I almost didn't dip, I had been out and about mostly working for an 18 hr day when I got home, was from another well known and sucsessfull reefer. Very nice and generous guy. I figured that Tim didn't have anything and I knew I was safe but once you start breaking a rule it's no longer a rule. Well, I found AEFWs and he has been dealing with them for about 3 months now and I have not. Calling him to tell him about them was one of the worst calls I have ever made in my life.

Good news for everyone who didn't dip, they can rest easy. I didn't find anything questionable.

Yep. All the bayer dips in the world didn't stop 'em. Thankfully because Mark called me it was caught very early. It was only on about 5-6 corals total at that point. I wouldn't have known bayer didn't kill them otherwise.

What I'm getting at is not about who did or didn't get a particular pest but more about if everyone dipped and inspected every coral, we as a hobby, would have a lot fewer pests.

I do like the melefix approach of seeing if anything came off the coral and then inspecting for pests and egg and responding accordingly.

It's not to say I can never get a pest if I dip every time but I'm a lot less likely to get one and give it to 15-20 people if i do dip every time

And if everyone else dips every time, the rarity of pests will grow exponentially.

I dipped everything I got every time and never kept plugs, 15m dips in Bayer, heavy doses. The dip was the problem.

I understand that

But if the people you got your frags dipped every tme

And the people they got them from dipped every time

And so onand so forth

Pests would be a much smaller problem in the hobby.

I think they do. Sometimes stuff will ust get through. It sucks. But I think that's the reality of the hobby.
