Totoro001's 120g Build

I SHOULD have started a thread here from the beginning as well as on my local forum, buuuut I didn't. I'm going to condense all of my progress thus far into one post, and then update both as I have updates.

Hey all!

I thought I'd post a brief introduction as well as document my new tank build.

I recently moved back to MN after living in Vegas for about 12 years. A couple years ago I got into the saltwater hobby and absolutely love it! Much like many of you I started out the WRONG way. First I got a little 10g tank and threw a couple of clowns, some live rock, and some softies in it. I'm sure you all know how THAT went. After about 2 months of that I upgraded to a 40g breeder display with 20g long sump. I lived on the 2nd story of a condo complex so that's about the biggest thing I could get. I ran that tank for a couple of years and it taught me a LOT about the hobby.

Before my wife and I moved, I knew I was going to try and find a rental where the ground floor was on the slab so we could get a bigger tank. We are currently renting a town home in Woodbury and my 120g build has begun! Unfortunately I have been met with challenge after challenge. :(

Let's start from the beginning. I picked up an older 120g (48 x 24 x 24) off of CL that was dirty and needed some love. I hauled that heavy beast home (it was a tank from '95 so it was made with the MUCH HEAVIER 1/2" glass), took some measurements, then went to Home Depot to grab some wood to start building the stand.

The stand build went well (or so I thought), so it was time to focus on buying goodies for the tank. After planning out my plumbing, lighting, electronics, and all my toys, I turned my attention to the tank (don't worry, I'll explain all the fun toys later). Because it was old I wanted to make sure I resealed it before I did anything else so I started cleaning the tank.

As I cleaned I noticed that although it was super dirty, a lot of what I was seeing on the tank wasn't dirt or grime or algae, but was actual scratches and scuffs in the glass! UHG! Don't get me wrong, I know it's fixable, but the amount of time necessary and the cost (not huge, but enough to bug me) got me thinking that maybe it'd be better to sell the tank and overflow, and spend a LITTLE more on a new 120. I shopped around and found out that my new favorite LFS was having a members only sale on tanks (and other stuff) so I grabbed a new 120 that came predrilled with overflow. AWESOME!

I got it home, and had a neighbor help me lift it onto my "awesome" stand. After I got it up there, I fiddled with it for a bit, only to realize that my STUPID stand wasn't square. The top platform matched the bottom platform, but I had somehow created a parallelogram instead of a rectangle (I realize a rectangle is technically a parallelogram but still). While TECHNICALLY this would be fine and would still be strong, I planned on building cabinets along side of the tank stand and if the stand wasn't square, the cabinets wouldn't be either and it would all look like crap. Soooooo the stand had to come apart.

I asked my family who was up for dinner to help me lift the tank off of the stand, and saved that part of this ordeal for another night.

Today after church I headed out to the garage, which is getting awfully full with 3 tanks and a tank stand in it. I started by taping off the old 120, and resealing it (as I know it'll take a few days to dry and I want it to be the best it can be for when I sell it). Once that was done, I tore down the old tank stand and started the rebuild. I know the BEST thing to do would be scrap it and start over, but I feel I found a way that will ensure the structural integrity and save me time and money (but we'll see in the end).

I was able to disassemble and square up the top and bottom platforms, and rebuild the uprights in a way that I feel is cleaner and stronger! I also attached some plywood to the bottom of the bottom platform to ensure it'll stay square while I continue to assemble the rest of the stand. Tomorrow after work I'll pick up some more ply to attach to the top platform, so it'll stay square while I attach the uprights to it. I don't have a TON of pictures as I'm actually in the process of editing the video of my build so far to upload it to youtube, however until then I'll dump in the pics I've got so far.

As I make progress, I'll hop on and let you all know how things are going, and if any of you are around the Woodbury area and want to grab a coke and BS about tanks, or just need someone to help you carry your new stand or whatever, let me know!

I thought I had more pics than this but apparently I was wrong. Please excuse the general mess in the garage as I had 2 2000 sq ft warehouses before I moved that I've had to condense down into a 1.75 car garage..

Tonight I plan to pick up some 1/2" OSB for the top of the stand (where the tank will sit), as well as the back and the sides for torsion strength, and some cabinet grade 3/4" maple plywood for the front of the stand to make it look pretty. I also plan on grabbing some maple 1 x 3's, and maple 1/4" plywood to make cabinet doors out of. I'm yet to decide what I want to make the hood out of (what thickness or how I want to build it) but I should probably figure that out so I can pick up the lumber for that at the same time!

09-22-2014

I'm glad to hear that with plywood on the front, back, and sides that it will be plenty strong. With yours and mrbill's recommendations I'll skip the OSB and get some quality ply. The less I have to worry about the better!

Once I have time (between spending time with my wife, trying to keep our new puppy from tearing down the house, and building the stand) I'll get off my butt and edit the videos I'm working on so you can see a bit more than just my textual ramblings!

09-26-2014

I know it's not all that exciting but I FINALLY was able to get the home depot rental van tonight and got a whole mess of wood. I also cut out some nice 1/2" pieces of birch ply for the top and sides of the stand. Hopefully next time I get a chance to work on it I'll be able to cut the piece for the back, and then I've got 3/4" ply for the face of the stand and cabinets. I'll post pics later this weekend when I have time to sort out the explosion that is now my garage.

09-29-2014

Progress was made! Ive got it skinned in 1/2in birch ply and am about ready to take the skinning off again to glue it and reskin it. Once that's done, I'll prime and paint it, and it's load testing time!

Once I get this tank cycling I'll get off my butt and get the video uploaded.

10-01-2014

I know it looks the same, but all the plywood was removed, glued, and rescrewed. I have also put a new piece of ply on the bottom and the bottom interior. Tonight I will prime and paint!

10-01-2014

Got the stand primed tonight, and the silicone off of the 40 breeder. Im a little closer to done!

10-02-2014

So the box is big and white and shiney now. Got the first coat of paint on it tonight. Hopefully get a second coat on tomorrow night so it can be dry and load tested by this weekend. The lower temperatures are making it slow to dry, but it's all I've got to work with.

Also there was a giant salamander trying to break into our place. I'm not sure of his intentions, but I don't trust him.

The build continues. I had some 1/4" glass cut by Brin.. or Brim.. some glass company @ 2300 N 2nd st in MPLS about 5 miles from BRS. I glued them into my 40g breeder sump to make 2 bubble traps and 3 chambers. I got started on the plumbing tonight and got the drain from the tank -> sump done, and I got to work on the overly elaborate return. I need to pick up a few more fittings from 'the depot' tomorrow and then I'll finish up the plumbing.. After that I can FINALLY stress test the stand, and if it doesn't explode, I'll move it into the house.

10-12-2014

Got everything plumbed and water in the tank. It hasn't exploded yet! If it lasts until Monday, I'll drain it and bring it inside. I'm so excited!

10-13-2014

Tonight I got the shell of the hood/canopy built, and fitted to the tank, and the hinge put into place so it'll open and close. Tomorrow evening I'm going to reinforce it a bit more, and then prime and paint the INSIDE of it the same white as the stand. After I get a couple coats of primer on them, I'll test my stains on some scrap wood and decide what stain to use for the facia/hood/cabinets, and what stain to use for the accent trim pieces. Also I can hopefully drain the tank, get it into the house, and get it leveled tomorrow night so when I finish my aquascaping/cutting up my dry rock, I can start cycling things!

I'm super excited this is all coming together finally!

10-14-2014

Progress was made tonight! So last night I got the shell of the canopy built. Tonight I strengthened it a bit and decided on a stain/poly combo. I also had some help in moving the stand+tank+sump into the house and leveling them all so they're ready for water! Tomorrow I'm going to strengthen the hood a little more so it stays square (I only used 1/2" ply so it's a little floppy) when it's on the tank, then I'll prime and paint the inside white, and sand/stain/trim/sand/stain/poly the outside. While that's drying I'll work on the aquascaping as I'd like to get that all in the tank along with the sand so I can fill it up with water and start cycling.

10-15-2014

So, the other day after the load testing was completed we moved the tank into the house and got it leveled and all ready for water. I also started on the canopy. Today I got the structure of the canopy completed so tomorrow I'll start primping and painting the inside, then stain and poly the outside :D

10-17-2014

Allllright so a bit more progress made tonight. It's not super exciting, but it was necessary. I got the inside of the canopy primed and ready for paint tomorrow. I also cut the canopy down by 3/4" as I forgot I was going to run trim around the bottom of it to give it a more finished look. I also think we decided on stains for everything so after the paint dries, I can start to stain. While the paint is drying tomorrow, I will start on aquascaping and preparing 50ish gallons of salt water.

Today

Tonight's progress. Inside of the canopy painted gloss white, and aquascaping started. I know you can't tell from this picture, but it's a lot more 3D than it looks.

Progress for the night! I got the trim pieces on the front portion of the canopy, and got the accent piece cut out and stained. I feel like this is all taking forever, but in the meantime I've got my RODI unit working overtime. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have a good bit of RODI water so I can start making some salt water, and when the glue on my aquascaping dries, I can start cycling the tank.

Got the canopy trimmed and stained and about 60g of saltwater brewing. Im not sure I like how the two tone looks, but I'll reevaluate after poly.

Tonight's work has been done. I got 2 coats of poly on the canopy, 60ish gallons of saltwater into the display, as well as sand and dry rock in the tank. I am a little upset with myself in that I forgot to re-rinse off the first piece of rock I put in the tank as it had a ton of saw dust on it from being in the garage while I was working on building things, buuut I'll pick up a filter sock or something to get it all out once I have enough water to turn on the return-pump.

Looks great!

Thanks Reeferplax!

Nice thread. Keep it coming. What kind of overflow will you eb using?

Thanks JMorris! I'm using the stock overflow that came with the Marineland 120g. It's a corner overflow in the back left corner and technically it comes with one 'drain' tube, however I'm using the 'return' tube that's in the same overflow area and converting it into a herbie system (if I recall correctly that's the one where one is at full syphen and the other is just barely skimming what's left).

No new pics tonight as nothing really looks all that different. I picked up a pressure gauge for my RODI unit and found out that I was only operating at 40PSI at the RO membrain, so I added a booster pump and now I'm at nearly 100PSI. Things are running much more smoothly there. I sanded my canopy with 200grit and applied a (hopefully) last coat of poly. I HATE sanding before the final coat as it makes things look like crap and you're always afraid that it'll never look good again, but I'm sure it'll be fine. Other than that I got another bag of sand, dropped that into the tank, and then added SeaChem's stability in to start cycling and growing some bacteria. By tomorrow night I should have another 60g of fresh water, then by Thursday evening that should be salt water. I'll keep you all posted!

While there was progress made tonight, there wasn't a TON I could do since technically the poly is still curing and I really shouldn't do much until it's cured for 48 hours. I did however take the front part of the canopy and slap it on the tank.

20141022_201131%20(Copy).jpg

I think it looked pretty awesome! I had to sand down the trim on the bottom to make it flush with the plywood as it fit a little too snugly before, but after sanding I think it'll fit great.

I also got the plumbing completed in the rear part of the canopy and 4 little pieces of wood primed and painted, which I will use to mount the plumbing to the canopy itself. Tomorrow on my way home from work I'll stop by 'the depot' and pick up 4 PVC hangers, then get all that stuff hung, and the front and back halves of the canopy connected via piano hinge again, then get it all back on the tank!

I've also got about 60g of saltwater in the tank (as you can see) and another 60g that'll be ready tomorrow. That should fill the tank and overflow a little into the sump. I'll whip up 30g more that should be ready by Friday or Saturday and that'll top off the sump, at which point I can get the pumps running and everything going the way it should be!

I've also started dosing the tank with SeaChem Stability (starter bacteria). I've used the product in the past and I was very pleased with the results, so I'm hoping in 2 weeks I should be ready for SOME sort of livestock.

So we got the canopy officially done (I think.. I might add more vents to it, but we'll see). It's plumbed, lights mounted and on (obviously) and all ready to go! Added the other 60g of saltwater to the tank and more SeaChem Stability. Making one more batch (30g) of saltwater, and one batch of fresh water. That 30g should top off the salt water and the other 30g of fresh will be top off water for the evaporated water. Yayyy progress

Just tagging along. Everything is looking nice so far. Any plans on tiling below the tank? Had my fair share of disasters is why I'm asking.

Thanks Scurvy!

Tiling? Oh you mean instead of the carpet? This is a rental so unfortunately I don't really have any say on that. I am certain I'll be buying them new carpet when we move out in a few years, so I'm just mentally/financially preparing for that. :)

I know I haven't given an update in a couple of days but I promise you that progress is stil being made! I made a small area inside the stand to mount my electronics and mounted nearly everything where it should be. The cabling is awful looking and I need to spend some time to clean it up, but it's there. I also got my Apex unit hooked up and functioning, lights talking to the Apex, and temp/pH probes up and going. This week (most likely tomorrow) I'll start on the piece to make the stand look pretty! Once everything is up and going, I'll get off my butt and get the video I took edited and online.
